CNet Says: If you’re looking for a premium listening experience, check out the Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphones. They sound fantastic and will probably outlast your MP3 player.

Digital Trends Says: The Shure SE310s are the best single-driver canalphones we have auditioned to date. While they lack a unique signature and sound slightly flat, overall performance was excellent. The design showcases the maturity of Shure’s place in the market, and the new ear sleeves are the most comfortable we have used.

JBL Creature III Computer Speakers, What You Need To Know

Unique is the best way to describe the Creature III computer speakers from JBL. And, thankfully the Creature III’s sound is almost as good as their looks. The Create IIIs produce a large and engulfing sound stage when seated near field, and are powerful enough to fill a small room with sound.

They work with any device that has a 1/8th headphone jack. That means you can plug them into your smart phone and play your own music of stream Pandora. Just as easily you can connect them to your laptop, iPod and more. But beware of bad grounding, the Creature III’s can develop an annoying hiss.

The Creature III has bass and treble tone controls located on the small but powerful 3-Inch subwoofer unit. Though the sub won’t rock a house party it generally provides ample bass for most listeners. Though at higher volumes, past 80% or so the bass can bloat and flub out and with complex music can sound just plain bad. The power switch is located at the back of the sub unit, which can make turning the speakers on and off troublesome. Thankfully the sub is small enough that it can sit right on your desk top, giving easy access to power and tone controls.

The dual satellite 1 5/8th-Inch tweeters are hard wired into the sub unit. Take extra care of those wires because unlike the well built Creature I and Creature IIs many users have had issues with the wires developing breaks, and thus a loose of signal to the tweeter. The touch sensor volume control on the left satellite speaker is unique to speaker at this price point. While easy to use and built solid, they can be slightly sensitive and jump past your desired volume level.

Unfortunately there is no headphone adapter on the Creature IIIs. If you need to switch between speakers and headphones, say at your office, you’d best consider a y-split cable from Mono Price.

Being blessed by the audiophile bug can put a rather large dent in the old pocket book. Add to that the risk of reselling gear at prices far below what it was purchased for, and one can understand why audiophiles are looking for great gear at more reasonable prices, or just buying used. But the products in these markets are limited. And hunting is time consuming and spending a couple thousand on used gear in ‘unknown’ condition, or on an unknown manufacturer, can be extremely risky. So Gary Alpern, an audiophile with years of marketing experience both in the audio world and out and a keen ability to measure value and quality, is on a mission to expand the purchasing options in this emerging value market.

Last year Gary started the Audiophile Outlet Store. (www.audiophileoutletstore.com) AOS sells factory authorized products with manufacturer warranties and Gary is focused on products with high quality and reliable sound that will last a life time and not cost an arm and a leg. The idea is to give audiophiles a wider and safer selection of gear. Over stock and B-stock items from reputable manufacturers that might not be available through standard channels are now easily accessible online.

The products on Audiophile Outlet Store are constantly being updated and once something is gone, it is gone for good. Items are priced to sell.

Gary also the importer of Audion products. Audion is the brain child of David Chessel, who was technical director for Audio Innovations, and Mr. Erik Anderson, Audio Innovation’s initiator and one of Europe’s top audio designers. Since 2000 Graeme Holland has owned Audion and has focused on competing in the ultra high fidelity market with gear sold for much lower prices. He is said to have a natural aversion to over charging customers. Audion products are all ‘hand made, point to pointwiring’ using the best U.S. and European components. At True Audio (www.trueaudiophile.com) one can find all of Audion’s great products. Granted these still aren’t entry level prices, but if you want to play with in the majors at minor league prices, this is where it is at.

And while the AudiophileOutletStore.com and TrueAudiophile.com provide a valuable service, I think that Gary’s larger goal, to make high-end audio fun, again, is even more valuable.

Anyone with two brain cells can tell you that the business-as-usual approach is no longer working. The only good news we hear these days comes from personal audio sales and kids buying vinyl that is regulated to spend a brief life time on swap meet tables with miss-aligned cartridges. With the collapse of many brick and mortar music stores and the movement of audio into digital downloads, headphones, iPods, the high end retailer is getting little fresh blood. Sure there is some, but go to any hi-fi event and the dominate population is retiring baby boomers. Heck, walk into most hi-fi shops without a nice watch and a beamer outside and see what kind of service you get. While there is talk about change, Gary is the only person I’ve met who has written a manifesto and is taking some action.

Gary has starting to build an alliance of manufacturers who are concerned with the next generation. These manufacturers want to make quality high fidelity components that compel the youth rather than intimidate them. Gary’s ideas about a collective positive and open attitude, a seal of acceptance to play whatever music you want to hear, and the guarantee that the products they sell are made to last a life time and meet the criteria of a high fidelity component, is a great start to a new hi-fi culture. Lets hope, and help, him succeed.

While that’s not exactly pocket change, it’s a far cry from what many people consider “high-end” and yet most of the audiophile speakers we’ve seen in our day don’t approach this type of build quality and styling.

There are basically four things you should take into consideration when shopping for iPhone earphones(buds).

Fit - This is by far the most important factor for any earphone.  If they fit is wrong it can hurt, bass will not be exact, and you’ll feel you’ve wasted your money.  Since these days it is hard to walk into a store and try on earphones as easily as it is to walk in and try on shoes, you’ll have be dutiful in finding out the return and/or shipping policy of the brick and mortar or online shop you bought them from.  But above all else, if the earphones you order don’t fit your ears than you must return them.  Else you’ve wasted money.  Or you can try out third party ear tips for better fit, isolation, and comfort.  Most earphones only come with three fit sizes, but some manufacturers are starting to see that isn’t enough.  The current set of Monster iSports we had in for review had six different tip sizes.  And more manufacturers are doing this.  Also the better the fit the more likely the earphones will stay in while you move around.  But in the list below we are only considering earbuds which don’t have a brace and most, no matter how well the fit, will pull out of the ears rather easily.

Sound Style - There are actually to factors to consider here with sound style.  One is the actual tonal character of the earphones and the other is the sound pressure they produce.  In the list below we have done our best to describe the tonal color and sonic characteristics of the recommended earphones, but sonic pressure each earphone produces effects use on an individual level.  The pressure from earphones, if too great for a persons ears, can cause listen fatigue and head aches.  Part of this is the sonic character of the sound but another part is how much of the sound pressurizes your ear drum.   One might not notice at first, but after some time you’ll become uncomfortable and be happy to pull the earphones out and let your ears breath.  Unfortunately this is such an individual issue that it is hard to give recommendations.  But if you want earphones don’t fret.  If at first you don’t succeed, return and try another pair.  Here at work one person couldn’t wear the iMetal earbuds but had not issue at all with the ClarityOne earbuds.  It just depends on you.

Quality - Lets face it, earphones, headphones, break.  And no matter how much you pay for them, and how much you care for them, they will most likely break at some point or another.  So starting off with a solidly built earphone and good care is the best prevention to this tragedy. Fortunately all the headphones on this list are well build.  The only one to have user feedback over build quality are the Monster Beats Tour – but Monster appears to have a very good warranty dept.

ControlTalk - This allows you to control the audio from your cable. Â Integrated with the mic section on the yoke, ControlTalk able earphones give you the ability to pause, play, stop, RR and FF your audio. Â You can also use ControlTalk with the iPod Shuffle’s voice control system.

Granted they aren’t specifically made for the iPhone like the above models are but for $129 you get every penny worth of good sound. Clean mid-range, real punchy bass and detailed and extended highs. Actually these are so good we have been using them on more than just the iPhone because well – they are capable of pointing out the weakness in standard MP3 and iPhone DAC. $250 sound for half the price. The ClarityOne earphones use a the “Pure Sound Processor” system that in essence it “couples” the speaker to the amplifier. These earphones get around the distortion caused by Lenz law to create a truly audiophile experience at a consumer level cost. All harmonic detail is passed from the iPhone or MP3 player of your choice into the ClarityOne earphones. Without getting into too much detail lets just say that we are very impressed with these earphones and they come highly recommended.

Summary:

The iSports Immersion earphones well surpass the requirements for sport earphones. But the $180 price tag might be a bit of a bitter pill for some folks to swallow. But even with some audiophile quibbles, taking the package as a whole, a crash proof fit and very sturdy build, being water proof, warm clean bass and detailed mid-range and gentle highs, the iSport Immersion earphones don’t let down. Now you just have to find a water proof portable bomb shelter for your iPhone!
