Strength:

I am forced to read a book, because the TV never works...

Weakness:

Extremely poor Customer Service Department.

Thank you for letting me express my complete disappointment and anguish with my 27” Sony Wega and the Sony Customer Service Department. I bought this TV a year and a half ago and have only gotten to enjoy watching it for less than a year. Eleven months after purchase, the screen went completely blank. I called Sony and was referred to a Sony authorized repair facility in my area. The dealer charged me $ 89 for “technical time” but the parts were under warranty. Within 2 months the TV would not come on again. Therefore I had to lug it into the dealer a second time. AGAIN, he had it in the shop for a month and supposedly fixed the problem. Three months later the same problem occurred. I called the Sony Customer Service Department to hopefully figure out a solution, and they recommended another “Sony Authorized Repair Facility” in my new area and said that if the problem seems to be a repetitive thing that they would “consider some options.” I told them that I thought I bought a lemon off of the production line and wanted a new TV. Well, that was a waste of breath. Anyway after dropping the TV off at a different repair facility, I get a call two months later to let me know that the repairs would cost $ 204.00. (For the exact same problem as the last two times!) Now my total cost in repairs for this TV (that I haven’t really gotten to enjoy) totals just under $ 300. I paid $ 500 for the thing. I called the Sony Customer Service Department for a fourth time to explain the new scenario. I had to repeat the entire story three times to three different people and still didn’t get anywhere. The only solution they offered was to pay 20% of the $ 300 in repair costs. This doesn’t even compensate for the months I spent without the TV, or the pain involved in disconnecting it from the entertainment center and lugging it to the repair store (three times). Wow, what a deal I got. To anyone who is thinking about buying one of these Sony Wega TV’s, I HIGHLY recommend you research other brands and go with a company that has a solid reputation for customer service.

SONY 60" Grand Vega LCD Television DO NOT, DO NOT, even think about purchasing this TV. Let me tell you about my experience with the 60" Grand Vega. My Grand Vega, at one year and one week of age, developed a faint red band about 3" wide around the perimeter of the screen and would no longer focus properly. Consequently, I loaded up the TV and took it to a local repair shop who looked at it and advised me to take it to an authorized Sony repair shop which was a 140 mile round trip for me. That was over 6 months ago and the TV remains in the shop. The repair shop has been very good to work with. However, they could not diagnose the problem so they called Sony Technical Support who were initially unresponsive. After many, many calls by me that consisted of pleading and prodding to Sony customer support, who again were initially unresponsive, finally directed their Tech Support boys to contact the repair shop. You guessed it, they could not diagnose the problem and have apparently walked away from it except for telling the repair tech to replace the entire optical unit which costs $2700.00. The TV repair shop cannot get the Sony Tech boys to follow up on the situation. Lets see, $5000.00 for one year then spend another $2700.00 year after that so I can say I have a Sony? I have called and called Sony's help line requesting them to help with repair of the TV or to replace it. They don't return calls and should contact be made, which is seldom, Sony will make promises and fail to follow up. This TV has been down for over 7 months, no one seems to know how to repair it and Sony could care less. Should not Sony's flagship TV endure for more than one year and should it not be repairable? The TV repair shop is also very frustrated with Sony and I feel that I have been had by Sony. I thought I was getting the best and now I know I dished out 5 grand for a pile of junk. I would recommend anything but a Sony.

Strength:

Picture was very good, although could see scanning lines in cable pics at relatively close distance (5-7 feet from television). Remote is nice.

Weakness:

This model appears to have an inherent defect in the tuner - I would avoid it. Set is VERY heavy. Picture shows some scanning lines when viewing close up (5-7 feet).

SONY FV-32HS500 32 inch HDTV capable TV. Purchased June, 2002. This model appears to have an inherent defect. We went through 3 of them in a month, finally returned it completely and went shopping for another set. We brought it home, set it up in place of an 8 year old 27 inch Sony that still worked good, but we wanted a larger set. On channels 13, 14, 15, 22, 23, whenever you switched to those channels, the tv picture and sound would pop for a few seconds continuously and then settle down - this happened from the first day. We called Sony, they said they didn't know what the problem is. The repairman came out and said the tuner was bad. We had a replacement set delivered - this was only 2 weeks after the first set was purchased. The replacement was even worse - did the same thing but on other channels as well. We had that taken back and got a THIRD one the following week. Same problem. At that point, we returned them all. Sony claims it doesn't know anything about this, but I highly recommend avoiding this set. By the way, just in case you wondered, we tried replacing the cable and that didn't help. We put another tv on that cable and had no problem. This was strictly a problem with the tv and not the cable or other components.

Weakness:

Sound and speaker reliability, to be specific.

After reviewing all 52 posted comments, I could not resist writing about my experience with the Sony Wega KV-36FV16 which I purchased less than 2 years ago. Picture is wonderful, but the speakers have failed. And I do not use high volume! The paper cones have torn completely free from the metal frame of both speaker. And I am not able to get a SONY replacement part!!!! I had to order generic 4" Polycone magnetically shielded speakers to replace the inferior speakers. This is really unacceptable for a $1,700 TV to have such "crap" quality, especially from SONY! So enjoy your sound, consumers. It's just a matter of time when you may be in the same boat. Someone wrote thinking there are 6 speakers...no, there are only 2 "bass reflex" enclosures which house the 4" dia 12-16oz magnets with magnetic shielding. My TV repair guy said they were 4-8 Ohm impedence, FYI.

Clear picture, Great sound and cool silver color. Goes great with digital cable.

Weakness:

This product is extremely heavy and requires at least two people to move it, and expensive.

After getting this flat screen with all of the features that it comes with I don't know how I ever did without it. The timer controls are also a nice feature. My tv wakes up before I do in the morning and turns off by itself a little bit after I leave out in the morning for work. Over all a good buy for the money.

$$$PRICE$$$

I got this 27" Wega because it looked cool and because of the picture quality. My wife likes the shiny aluminum-like case. On screen menus are very nice and the basic setup is very sweet. But after watching regular tube TVs for so long I am slightly bothered by what appears to be horizontal lines just on the edge of your perception, running across the screen. It's like a computer monitor that doesn't make enough horizontal lines for a trully smooth picture vertically. I don't know, maybe it's my imagination or maybe I'm too close to the TV. The definition especially on DVD is definately better and more natural than my samsung. I guess I just get the feeling that things are washed out in picture sometimes. Of course that could be changed and maybe I'll tinker with that some time. My wife thinks it great and much more realistic in color portrayal that other TV's. My she has better eyes. But based on my feelings and the price the value rating suffers for me though overall quality is probably excellent.

Weakness:

geometry, BAD on the eyes

After returning 3 sets due to poor geometry, I settled for my fourth set. The geometry was still not perfect, but was acceptable. I was amazed at the clarity and detail of the picture when I fisrt purchased it, however I knew something just wasnt right. This television is horrible on your eyes, similar to the effect you get when a computer monitor is set at an improper refresh rate. I have read other posts referring to the Sony Wega as a headache machine, they are correct. I believe this is unacceptable unless you don't know any better.
