I bought several years ago my 60in sony wega rear projection tv. The picture quality has been great however a couple of months ago my tv started to develope a blue screen across the bottom. I contacted the place were I bought it and they sent me to a repaire shop. They contacted sony for me and found that sony would cover the optic block replacement . In talking with the delivery men they stated that alot of other brands are having the same type of problems but that sony is the only one that has stepped up to the plate to cover the costs. I think this speaks alot about the company. If you really would like to know about a product or service just talk to the people who repaire them. The same is true with auto insurances talk to the auto repair shops to find out if some insurance companys don't cover cost of the repaires. After all you give them money every month to cover auto body damage. It speaks about the company and the way that they feel about you as a customer. I will shop sony products again.

This review is for the Sony grand Vega 50 inch LCD rear projection. I absolutely love this television. I have had no problems with it. I did get the extended warranty, which I was told covers the bulbs if they should go. I think like anything relatively new, the reliability record still is a big question. Hopefully after another year I can post a new review with more info, however, so far, so good.

Sony Wega 60 and we had to replace the bulb after two years. We purchased the extended warranty for $399.99 to find out it does not cover the lamp. They wanted to charge us $350 plus tax to replace the lamp and labor. My husband and I went to the Sony store on St. Pete Beach and bought a new lamp for $200 and replaced the lamp under 5 minutes. (Labor from Rex was $175). The store manager Cooper told me to read the TV manual before I purchase a TV. Please ask to take home the manual before making a big purchase. I was told not to listen to the sales person and read everything before my next purchase.

Customer Service

I will never purchase another thing from Rex Electronics. He told me that I should of bought a Plasma because they were more durable. I explained to him that we set out to purchase the Plasma and the store manager at the time told us that we would have more problems with a Plasma.

BULB

I bought a Sony 50 inch LCD tv. The TV is 2 years old. The tv works fine.
I have never had a bulb burn out but they do get dim. I can't seem to buy a (NEW)
replacement bulb. Be very careful if you are buying a bulb. There are many con artists
out there who are selling used bulbs as new ones. I guess they get them stores that
are displaying new TVS. When the bulb gets dim after many hours of use while on
display new bulbs are put in these TVS. People are getting the used (DIM) bulbs
and sellin them as new ones. This has happened 2 times to me. I paid $200.00 two times for suposedly new bulbs.
After installing them I have had to turn my brightness up to the max and the picture is still
not bright enough.
Sony does not put a seal on the box the bulb comes in so you can't tell if it's new.
I give up. I don't know where to buy a new one. Bill

should have bought the 55"

We have been watching our Sony WEGA for two years with no problems. It is on 8-10 hours a day. I have heard the bulb will eventually burn out, but it can be replaced by the owner for about $200. We paid $2599 on sale for the set. We are happy with the picture quality, especially on HD. Mike

Strength:

Beautiful picture. Lightweight.

Weakness:

Poor quality parts and lack of concern on the part of Sony. Parts are extremely expensive. I could have bought several tvs for the price I am paying just keep repairing this TV. I'll probably be better off just trashing the tv, cutting my losses (I can't sell it knowing that it is a lemon) and buying another brand that will give me good service. I have a 20-year-old Magnavox in the bedroom that is still going strong and has never needed one repair. I'll never buy Sony again. I'm not rich!

GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY if you buy a Sony Grand Wega. I had always wanted a good Sony television but couldn't afford one while working two jobs to put my son through college. I'm older now and had some savings built up so I splurged on the one luxury item I have ever allowed myself...a 42" Sony Grand Wega KF-42WE610 for $3,000.00. I did not buy an extended warrany because I was not an astitute buyer and had heard extended warranties were rip offs. Also, I thought that a Sony television for that price would be a well made set and that I wouldn't have to worry. Well, six weeks ago the lamp went out. That was $300.00 ($200.00 for the lamp and $100.00 for the service call. I later found out I could have installed the lamp myself. It just plugs in.). Now the set has gone completely black. The service man looked at it Monday and has yet to pick it up to take it to the shop. He said there were two computer boards inside that might be the problem. But one is $600.00 to replace and the other was $300.00 plus labor. Of course he won't know until he opens the set. After reading the other reviews, I'm terrified! Before you buy one of these sets, check the reviews of people that have owned them for about two years, and you will see the same problem. The glowing reviews are written primarily by people who have owned one for only a few months.

Polite but said there was nothing they could do.

Strength:

Nice set as far as features, performance and looks.

Weakness:

Unbelieveably unreliable. The power supply is so hot you can't touch it when it the set is running. The pc boards are so cheap they look like they where made in a garage in a third world country by prison labor and they probably were.

I spent 2000 dollars for a 34 in SONY WEGA FD Trinitron and I used it about 2000 hours before it self destructed. No one who values their hard earned money should ever come within a hundred miles of any product made by Sony. They are mostly a scam outfit. They offer but they do not deliver-I think that is fraud. The set performed great while it worked and like most of their products, it was very stylish. That is the key to their success. Make products that will get out of the showroom and then "poof!" they're toast. I am a very successful electronics engineer with 25 years of design experience and I can tell you that these products made by Sony are designed with parts that are exposed to voltages and current well beyond their rated values. I figured this out after many weeks of researching and reverse engineering my very expensive busted TV's design. That is how they are able to sell their products so cheaply. They push the design margin to a negative range and reduce the product cost to the point that they only a have a few percentage points of profit margin. That way they can beat the competitions price and still have some profit. They are a big shark with a big, popular name and now they are lining up suckers like me and shaking us down. Stay away from Sony.
