SIZE! SIZE! and SIZE!

Simply the best sub on the market for $1200. I too have owned M&K, Velo, Monitor Audio and REL. The PB12-Plus/2 goes deeper but more impressively with the authority that the others couldn't muster. The REL equalled the Plus/2 musically, but fell short with regards to HT. I just talked to Erik regarding the purchase of my second PB12-Plus/2. This will end my researching subwoofers for my theater, and probably end my marriage too. These subs will stay.

deep, clean bass. price was very fair and the shipping was super fast

Weakness:

big, but once i got used to it, i was super stoked

WOW, i upgraded from a little sunfire mark II and man, i was slumming. there is no comparision. the sunfire made loud noises, disguised itself well, but in the end the truth was revealed. it is a pretender. sunfire subs cost more than the sub i got, but the svs kicks serious butt. it is huge, dont be suprised when you buy one. it is 28" tall and 19" wide. i can fit 4 sunfires inside of the svs and still couldnt get the detailed bass that the new sub delivers. easy to follow instructions helped me dial it in quickly and the rest is history. one of those purchases that you feel good about after it arrives. love to demo it for friends. they just smile the whole time, smiling because it sounds so good and smiling cause they think i am crazy. people dont understand the afflection audiophiles develop. we upgrade and upgrade until we either die, or go to jail for stealing something to pay for our habits. the sunfire stole my money and the svs caught it red handed.

Strength:

Pure sonic bombast but with great SOUND QUALITY! Musically tight (uncommon with ported designs). Very tough finish on this beast!

Weakness:

Weight 140lbs. Bulky. OK by me though.

FIRST let me mention the honesty & integrety that Tom V. & Eric K. displayed when dealing with me! They promptly answered all my questions via email quickly and were very helpful in helping me decide on my next subwoofer. I wanted the ISD version sub (had about a grand to spend). I found a great deal from a guy that was selling a PB12-Plus/2 for $998. Even after that fact the SVS guys were treating me as a good customer! I will continue to lean toward SVS in the future. Ohhhhhhhh.the review! Short and sweet...I haven't had a chance yet to pull out the sound level meter but can say this; As much as I love Paradigm's PS-1200 & PW-2200 (new & old versions) and the Seismic12 this SVS is in a class by itself. And not for much more money. It really surprised me musically being the port design. Really TIGHT! That's the first thing I noticed and something which the Paradigm's lacked (except for the sealed Seismic12). DVD this is where the decibals come alive... cleanly too! If you've read threads of pictures falling off the wall ect..ect.. believe it. It can happen! At 1/4 volume it was shaking a wall mounted shelf (with glass on it) so much I had to stop the DVD and re-adjust things. At 1/3 gain it's like being in the film. Almost scary to go beyond that but will do so as soon as I bolt down the place. This is a 2100 sq ft listening area I might ad. Point is... so far SVS (although you can't audition them before you buy) is top notch electronically and the build quality is great. Sonically I'd dare any brand go against this beast one on one within the price range.I've auditioned almost all brands below $1800.00 I'm here to say it's a QUALITY product with GREAT customer support and the warranty isn't bad either!

Strength:

Depth of sound at whatever volume you desire.

Weakness:

SIZE! It's the size of a deep freezer. And the weight of a deep freezer that's full.

This review is for the PB12-Plus/2 sub. Even after a few days of listening, it's obvious that this is one serious sub. It sounds very deep with extraordinary authority. Very accurate for music, but for home theater it's simply a marvel. I can say without arguement that this sub is in a class by itself at $1200. Excluding the PB12-Ultra/2 there's nothing under $3K that can match it's value and output. Finally an upgrade that comes with a WOW factor.

Note: This model has changed to the PB12-Plus/2. I had the benefit of auditioning an SVS PC+ 20-39 so I thought I had some idea what to expect. The PC+ is more than a potent sub by any measure, arguably one of the best. However, the PB12-Plus/2 is like having two of them packed into the same enclosure! The enclosure is somewhat large when compared to the typical lesser cookie-cutter boxes out there. But, this sub is really in the super-sub class in which the enclosures are larger than normal anyway. The shear brute force of this monster has to be experienced to be believed. The output is extremely clean and just plain violent! If you are in the market for a quality subwoofer that won't choke on today's demanding LFE program material or music. This is your baby. As with most of the SVS subs, the PB12-Plus/2 gives you the flexibility to blend with any 2-channel mains or home theater setup. The “out of the box” setting at 25Hz yields output to around 20Hz when placed in the corner of my mid-sized room. I have not yet tried the lower settings but I am guesstimating that it could be coaxed to go lower than 12Hz in my room. I didn’t want to believe that my old Velos could be bested but, Tom V. (the “V” in SVS) summed it up best when he said you would need 2 Velodyne HGS-15s to better the performance available here. Truer words were never spoken. BTW, did you ever price 2 HGS-15s, how about even one new or used?!?!? You can pay more for another brand but rest assured you will NOT get more, just a lighter wallet and less performance. I have honestly never had the pleasure of dealing with any organization better run and more customer oriented than SVS. Do yourself a favor and try this or any of the SVS models. You will not regret it.

Its too big to hide from my wife.

I have been a home theater buff for about 16 years now. I have owned 4 different subs in that time, including M&K, Bose and 2 Velodyne. My latest sub was a powered 10" velodyne that I thought was big and heavy, so it had to sound great...right? Wrong! After reading every review that I could about SVS I finally broke down and pulled the trigger on a PB12+2 and learned what the definition of BIG & HEAVY really is. I alos learned that my "sub" was nothing more than a boom box for the house. The SVS sub brought a new meaning to the LFE in movie soundtracks. My other subs never even came close to what the SVS has done in reproducing low bass...and I mean LOW BASSS! My first night with the sub I played Monsters, INC. and during the part where "Boo laughs" two lamps started to flicker and a picture actually fell off the wall. Now my wife did not think this was cool but I immediatly knew where my extra money had went. This was bass that was clean , loud, low and that I could FEEL. I thought I could slip the new sub in the living room in place of the Velodyne and my wife would never know...but this thing is HUGE, so take my advice and tell her its coming guys, you cant hide this behind any piece of furniture you have in your house. I could go on and on about how great this sub is but that has been done to death..so the bottom line is this. If you spent top dollar on every other piece of ht gear you own(like I have) and dont have an SVS sub...you are wasting your time. I can guarantee you that you are missing out on the best part of the movie(LFE). Ed B. Lafayette, LA

DEEP, DEEP, DEEP (did I say DEEP) BASS !!!

Weakness:

None

I live in Argentina and English is not my inborn language. During many years of studying the language I've learned some adjectives like 'awesome', 'outstanding', 'impressive', 'excellent', etc., but none of these words come even close to define my PB2-Plus. I have looked them up in the dictionary to be certain about their definitions, and I got to the conclusion that none of them describe this sub. SVS did not only invent a Sub but a new ‘adjective’ as well. And that adjective my men is ‘SVS’. If someone asked me how does my PB2-Plus sound, I would answer: It sounds ‘SVS’. There is no other word to describe it. I’ve read in one review ‘it shakes the living-room so ruthlessly that it causes my vision to blur slightly and that is no lie’. This guy is not lying at all. In my case, the room, the floor, the 10 cinema seats and the screen shake !!!. I’ve placed this monster right at the back of my audio/video acoustically engineered room, which is approximately 25 x 15 feet, and the air waves make the screen shakes so badly that you can’t read the subtitles !!!. It sounds ‘SVS’ in 5.1 or Stereo. You have to listen to U-571 during the depth charge, Eurythmics in Stereo or ‘Another one bits the dust’ in DTS mode to understand what I mean. You won’t believe what this beast is capable of. It doesn’t matter how may words I can write to try to explain what I feel each time it turns on. You have to experience it to understand it. BASS, BASS AND MORE BASS....

Weakness:

RUBBER FEET INCLUDED FOR USE ON HARD FLOORING.

DO YOU LIKE BASS? Well I do. This beast of a subwoofer belongs in a big ol' SUV. This thing will please anyone serious about any kind of low frequencies in their sound reproduction. Whether it is music or movies, this crate sized monster will hit just the right note. The tuning features are very good for this price range. The user selected port tuning is a cool feature. I found that for maximum effect, you should leave all three ports open. You lose alittle way down low, but you gain massive air pressure levels. The phase control is also above average. It allows very good control of the wave timing. So you can tune this baby until your heart is content. Not to sound corny, but you will love this sub. It will rock your world. Be sure that you have plenty of room, or like myself, are willing to give up valuable space in trade for awsome bass. This thing will take up the same space as a mid-sized coffee table. As for solidity. This thing is built like a tank. It weighs in at 120 lbs., and is as solid as a rock. I used it as a step ladder, and i wiegh over 200 lbs. and nary a creak. The amp in the PB12 PLUS 2 is one nice amp. I like it loud and mine it turned to less than 1/3 of the gain. At this level, pictures WILL fall and sheet rock can crack. So be warned, It can do structural damage. So all I have left to say is SVS is a great company to deal with. They give email responses fast as lightining, and you even get a real person when you call. They take time to answer questions, and even give sincere opinions about which product is best for your specific application. Since you are reading these reviews you must be thinking about getting a sub for yourself. Well don't think anymore. If you have to save a while longer, then do so. It will be worth the wait. Don't rush out and settle for a lesser sub. Velodyne, HSU, POLK, JBL, ETC. don't even come close. HSU would be the closest in this price range, but still not as good. Go the way OF SVS. I am still excited as can be about this purchase. It thrills me every time I turn it on. So when you get it delivered, which sould be about 5 business days, try some LORD OF THE RINGS, or MATRIX REVOLUTION. You will never look at you local theater the same.

Here are my impressions of the PB2+: Whoa!!! Holy Cow!! What just fell over upstairs? Seriously, I am amazed at the quality, depth, and volume of bass that comes out of this box. I never thought that it was possible to achieve this level of subsonic sound pressure in your home for a measly $1200. The PB2+ is worth every penny and then some. The craftsmanship is exquisite and performance amazing. I initially located the unit on the back wall of my 18’ wide by 21’ deep HT area. We sit 12’ back from the TV so that puts the sub about 8’ or so behind us. After setting the gain using the Avia DVD and my Yamaha HTR-5280’s built in tone generators, I set forth upon my sonic adventure. I queued up LOTR:FOTR and listened for the ring drop. It sounded, or should I say FELT, like the ring was a 10 ton concrete doughnut landing on the floor. I moved on through the subsonic scenes of the other DVD’s that I own that are on the “demonstration list.” Each time I was amazed at what I missed the first time around. Needless to say, I was blown away during the entire audition. The sub not only sounded great on HT material, but was equally musical. Kick drums and bass lines were very clean with quick attack and decay. The muddiness that characterized my C-V sub was replaced with power and authority. The PB2+ scored big points on the WAF scale and added a whole new dimension to watching movies and critical listening. I then decided to try something different based on my drawings of our future HT design. In looking for an out of the way place for the black monolith, I saw a spot immediately behind the couch that would serve as our front row of seats in the future HT. The rear seats will be on a raised platform behind, and it appears that the sub, turned sideways, would fit between. So .... I located the PB2+ about a foot behind the existing couch and decided to test the effect. Well, let’s just say that I won’t need any “ButtKickers” to provide tactile forces. We watch Master and Commander and were absolutely blown away during the initial canon battle scene – I could feel the sound pressure wave hit the back of the couch and travel through the chair (and my body) before exiting the foot rest. I had to turn the volume down because the kids were scared – it was just TOO real. We then watched Peter Pan and were equally impressed with the LFE reproduced by the sub. Knocks, kicks, and impacts were FELT in addition to being heard. The bottom line assessment by all was that the PB2+ basically turned every movie that had LFE content into a EXPERIENCE akin to a theme park simulation ride. Those surprise “gotcha” scenes that had an accompanying thump or bump created an “out of your skin” experience. I found myself in need of a vodka martini to keep from jumping off the couch. I am not sure if placing the sub this close to the listening position is “proper”, but I can say that the impact of the subsonic content is magnified immensely. With music, this placement tends to be a little too immediate. However, since my Yammie has discreet IR codes for separate “Home” states, I can create separate music and movie profiles so that one touch on the remote lowers the subwoofer level and speaker size settings to shift only the lowest octaves to the PB2+. This helps to mitigate the compromise. To sum it up, I could not be happier with the PB2+, it is more than what was recommended by Ron and Tom at SVS, but I elected to spend the extra $300 above the PB2-ISD so I would not experience “buyer’s remorse.” I am glad I opted for the extra horsepower. I am now part of the few ... the proud..... The SVS CROWD!!!!

Strength:

Looks great. Incredibly well-built. Is able to output true Dolby Reference levels reaching SPL's of over 120dB whilst keeping distortion levels to a bare-minimum and this makes the PB2+ sound very clean and tight and not boomy. Has the ability to let the user tune the frequency to either 25hz/20hz/16hz to suit the users listening preferences. Superb money for value - to get this level of performance you'd have to spend at least twice as much!

Weakness:

Performance wise, there are no weaknesses. However the sub is huge so please look at the subs dimensions and making sure that it will fit in your room before ordering.

Before purchasing this sub, I had the luxury of hearing a 20-39PC-Plus in my living-room and that gave me an idea on the type of bass I was getting from the dB-12 woofer and also I read everything I could about the product as well as exchanging words with Tom V from SVS, I finaly decided to commit in buying the PB2+. It arrived in a big massive box which was resting on top of a small pallet and me and the delivery man (who was kind enough to help) really struggled to get the bugger through the door - it weighted over 120 pounds!!! It wasn’t until after removing the packaging that I realised how much care and effort SVS put into making sure that the PB2+ was so well packaged that it arrived safely and unmarked. Oh, did I forget to mention that the sub is really HUGE and is built like a tank lol! So how does it sound? After locating the ideal placement for the PB2+, I then got out my SPL meter and calibrated everything. I put on LOTR: FOTR and Daredevil, to test the sub out briefly and it wasn't long before I knew that PB2+ was something really special. The performance from the PB2+ is absolutely, jawdroppingly good and this is from someone who has owned a THX-Ultra II Velodyne HGS-18!!! The PB2+ is flawless with dvd movies and is able to output incredibly clean, LOUD, ruthless bass that could perhaps cause structural damage if one is not careful with their volume levels. The HGS-18 was able to shake my living-room pretty badly but the PB2+ takes this to another level - it shakes the living-room so ruthlessly that it causes my vision to blur slightly and that is no lie. It seems to intergrate alot better in my living-room thus giving a smoother and flater bass repsonse from 80hz all the way down to it's stock frequency of 25hz and this seems to elimanate any room-boom I had with previous subs. Anyone looking to purchase a premium subwwofer that can achieve true Dolby Reference levels with very low distortion in a medium to large room for under $1200 then look no further. It is without doubt one of the best subwoofers I have ever heard and dealing with SVS is a real pleasure.
