Strength:

Tight, accurate, no boominess, integrates great in stereo

Weakness:

none

Are there any audiophiles out there? My primary concern is two-channel with home theater a distant second. Speed and ability to blend is critical for a sub to be usable in a high quality two-channel set-up. The Sunfire junior delivers and even has a low distortion spl of 107 db. I tested several subs ranging from a 1500.00 M&k mx 150 to a 1500.00 paradigm servo 15 and the sunfire sounded the best with music because with proper set-up, you couldn't tell it was there. If your looking the most noises and percieved fake bass possible for home-theater then dumb-down and get a very big and boomy sub (like a paradigm ps-1000 bandpass or a klipsch sub.) But if you appreciate accuracy (although the junior kicks ass in all-around ability) then get the sunfire. Placement is important for subs and the size makes this little gem very flexible. Great product.

Strength:

Tight accurate base. Small box for easy placement. I am amazed that something so small can fill my medium size room with the level set to flat.

Weakness:

I am going to have to turn it down for music because the best setting for movies is a little too much for my music.

I bought this sub on Ebay from a guy that had purchased a pair and decided that only one was needed. Of course this sub costs more than the subs listed above, but it is absolutely worth it. I plugged the junior in and hid it in the corner. Without adjustment, it rattled the windows. After some adjustment on the level and crossover, it perfectly filled the missing low-end from my Mission 773e fronts that only go down to about 50Hz. I am just floored at how wonderful it sounds. If you get this sub, try playing the THX intro on the new Star Wars DVD. I would definitely recommend this sub to anyone.

Strength:

Very small size. Deeep bass from this little guy. Shakes the walls.

Weakness:

None.

I was in the market for a sub and after looking at all of the "large" units on the market, I decided I definately wanted a Sunfire product. At only 9" cubed, this little thing pounds! I live in a 1200 sq.ft. apartment and this thing shakes the walls. The bass is so clear it just travels like nothing is in its way.

Placement is very important with this unit. Thank goodness the manual is a good help.

I have the gain knob turned to below the "0 db" setting and it blends quite well. This unit is an absolute blast while watching movies. Check out U-571. Holy crap.

Basically, I was amazed that this little unit could perform so well. I have never even used half of its power and it's a monster.

Here are the components of my system for comparison:

Adcom GFA-555 II amp
Sony TA-E 1000 ESD pre amp
Sony ESD cd player
Energy 22.3 speakers (basically like a C-6)
Sunfire Jr. sub.
Monster 550 interconnects
Monster XP speaker wire (bi-wired to the Energys)

Strength:

Excellent Bob Carver design, tight controlled bass, plays well with music and movies

Weakness:

are you kidding? none!

Bought this little baby off of eBay (it was supposedly damaged) for $235! Got the unit and it had a small crack in the MDF housing and a clean "cut" on the rubber surround. I fixed the small crack with some wood glue and sealing foam (on the interior) and fixed the rubber surround with some silicone sealant (I was going to buy a new surround but found that there is no reason to do so).

The sub requires a bit of fiddling with placement, but once you find the sweet spot, LOOK OUT! Bass performance is superb! I get clean output to about 27 Hz (-3 dB)with no real obvious peaks or resonances that exceed +6 dB. The dynamics of this unit (due to its power amp) are incredible!

I purchased the remastered version of "The Silence of the Lambs" and thought that the newly engineered version was flat and lacking in bass until I listed to it again with this sub. Gunshots take on a real "in the gut" feel, and the cell doors slamming and revirbiration take on an incredible feel. Movies such as Gladiator and U571 simply come to life with this unit.

Music off of CD or MTV sounds excellent and unmuddied. I really like hearing the individual bass notes being played with clarity - not all muddied together like most subs do today.

Overall, one of the best audio purchases I have made to date. All A+'s!

PLACEMENT

EXTREMELY FAST AND ACCURATE BASS. VERY POWERFUL WHEN NEEDED, CAN PLAY EXTREMELY LOAD. LISTEN TO MAHLER AND WATCH FOR THAT BASS, WOW MADE ME LITERALLY JUMP OUT OF MY SEAT. CLASSICAL MUSIC REALLY DOES MAKE A SUB WORK. DO PLAY WITH DIFFERENT LOCATIONS BECAUSE IT PAYS BIG DIVIDENDS IN THE END. MORE WORK TO SET UP BUT WELL WORTH IT. I GOT MINE FOR A STEAL FROM EXTRPC IN N.Y FOR $665.00 PLUS SHIPPING. CALL THEM AT 516-359-6823 AND ASK FOR CHRIS.

Strength:

Tight, deep bass!

Weakness:

Needs a bit of room testing.

Deepest, tightest bass I've ever heard in a home sub. Tighter than the bigger Sunfires by a wide margin. Ver good for music but finicky about placement. It is much tighter than the HSU subs and it's amplified. the other guy who compared price to HSU must have forgotten the HSU needs a crossover and an amp(s. Add on the price of that equipment and the HSU is not the big bargain everyone says they are.

Strength:

Compact,good built quality,solid bass down to 25Hz with power.NO BOOMINESS(Rob Bab-Cock has a severe boominess in his thick skull)LOL

Weakness:

What boominess? This sub is sealed(passive radiator),the cabinet is like a brick,BOOMINESS? WHERE Rob Bab-Cock(also known as Joe Blow)needs to see a good doc.

I see all the real owners post good reviews here, some have very good speakers. And I see one pile or horse bricks written by a total bouffon like Rob Bab Cock(Bab Cock nice name pal).

Having heard so many high quality subs,so many High-End speakers and live music I dont get this "WHERE IS THE BOOMINESS?".

The Sunfire Junior has NO BOOMINESS AT ALL,ported designs tend toward boomy if not cut low. This is a sealed design(passive radiator).

And then Rob Bab-Cock puts his feet in his mouth by claiming the Sunfire Junior has little bass output! Is this clown on heavymedication or what?NO BASS,this sub can shake most rooms with 25Hz bass. This sub can also integrate well with very high quality speakers and evel electrostatics!

I know this is mostly a review about the trash talking little human who calls himself Rob Bab-Cock(ha that name again!).Well I guess his name says it all, dont you think.

Sunfire makes great subs,I own 3(4 if you count my Carver sub).I am not biased,if Sunfire made garbage I would not have a single of their products.

So listen, compare and decide.Dont let frustrated little Bab-Cocks fool you.

Strength:

Tight, fast bass, inobtrusive.

Weakness:

None found yet

To say this subwoofer is better than the last sub I was using, a Veloydne CT-80 does not do the sunfire any justice. I have Magnepan 1.6's and I have been told that the subwoofer search is a tiring and ultimately futile process because I will not find one that compromises the Magnepans. I am quite impressed with this sub. It has the rumble necessary for home theater and is capable of keeping up with the speakers for music. It blends seemlessly with the sound so I don't notice it. However, if I turn it off, the sound is not as good. Magnepans need a subwoofer but a good one is hard to find. This one is terrific, is relatively inexpensive, and very small. My room is 15'x15'. A much bigger room and I probably would get another one. Its cheao enough and small enough to not be a major concern.

Magnepan MGCC1-center

Strength:

tight bass, adjustable crossover, size vs power

Weakness:

have to use vibrepads to sit it on so it does not bounce all over the place.

I used a hsu at my friends house, he has 25 thousand in his system. I asked him to turn the hsu off because it was hurting the sound of the rest of the system. If Rob babcock has two of these things, he has no idea what they sound like because the amps need power. Unless he is using a ps audio p300 or the 600's or something close his system is sucking.

Sorry had to do that, the Sunfire Jr is a good subwoofer for my setup. If one does not care about the quality of sound and just worries about spL (like Rob Babcoook) then buy a hsu and turn it all the way up and leave the rest of the system off. The owners manual shows one how to setup the jr using a spl meter and matching it to the system. After doing this it blends in well. After breaking in the subwoofer, the whole soundstage starts to shine.

Anyone who cares about their system try different subs, not all subs are for everyone. Another friend of mine has a velodyne that did not blend well with my norh 6.6's. He got the norh 4.0's and it matched perfect.

I give this sub a 4.0 on both because everything could sound better.

my system incase Rob Bubbcock doesn't think I buy stuff off the internet.

Strength:

Flexible crossover & phase controls, small size, reasonable price for performance

Weakness:

cabinet resonance

Having used my Magnepan 1.6's for about a year, I have found them wonderful in all but one respect. They have a slightly weak lower octave in my listening room. My system is used for music only, no home theater use at all. The layout of my space dictated as small a sub as possible, so my first sonic choice, REL, was not desirable. M&K, Pinnacle, and Sunfire make small subs that comprised the group I thought I'd try one from. Sunfire was my first choice among these mainly because it had the lowest adjustable crossover point, 35hz. vs. 50hz. for the others. It also has an infinitely adjustable phase control vs. a 180 degree switch on the others.
I installed the sub in a corner behind the right channel speaker, using two interconnects from the second set of preamp outputs on my Music Reference RM5III. The first Stereophile test cd's bass warble tone test tracks helped dial in crossover & volume level with a couple hours testing & listening. In my system, the sub needed VERY little volume and it sounded best crossed over at about 45hz. When listening to this sub alone, without the main speakers, there was noticeable cabinet resonance audible on loud transients. What others have reported is true, this sub sounds better spiked & weighted down. The sub is sitting on a double thickness MDF plinth that's spiked to the concrete floor under the carpet. The top of the sub is damped with 20 lbs. of weight that's affixed with blue tack. It sounds much more accurate now.
I listen to a wide variety of music: classical, jazz, rock, world music. The Sunfire Jr. has proven to be a worthwhile addition that enhances the realistic reproduction of all kinds of music. As adjusted now, it doesn't call attention to itself, it just fills in the missing musical info in the bottom end. As accurate as the Magneplanar 1.6's are, they are missing a surprising amount of bass information on many recordings. With my system, in my room, the Sunfire Jr. is a winner. I don't doubt that more expensive and larger subs play louder and have lower distortion. That said, this little sub delivers acceptable performance, doing what I need it to for a most reasonable price. 5 star value, but 4 stars for performance because there are better subs out there.
For info, the system is: Sunfire Sub Jr., Magnepan 1.6qr, Music Reference RM5 preamp, Belles 150A Hot Rod amp, Cambridge CD4se for transport, Assemblage dac 2.7 Platinum, Music Metre interconnect & Kimber 4TC speaker cable.
