Strength:

Incredible sound for the size (9"x9"), price, quality

Weakness:

None

I have hemmed and hawed over adding a subwoofer to my system for quite some time. Most reasonably priced subs are huge and lack the well defined bass needed to give noticeable improvement to my main speakers (Vienna Acoustics Mozarts). Still for home theatre applications the Mozarts were definately lacking. Having the dillema of so many people of needing to meet the approval of both parts of a blissful union the choices are pretty limited. Most people really don't want to park something the size of an old Buick in there living rooms just to add some bass to their systems. The Sunfire Juinor has answered that problem completely. Resisting the temptation of the Sunfires big brother at the store I decided to bring home Juinor knowing that the store offered full trade up priveledges. The Juinor seems to have dropped in price and was a full $500 less than its big brother. As a former high end audio store salesman I would reccomend that buyers of any product start out with more modest equipment and audition it in there home trading up only if you are unsatisfied with the sound quality. Many people will find that the percieved differences in sound quality are little more than ideas that have been implanted in their minds by salesman and literature. These subtle an often imaginary differences can cost you thousands of dollars for little or no improvement in your listening environment. In my home environment the Juinor performs incredibly. I did not find it to finicky to set up properly but as many other reviewers have recomended it does require spiking it down. A great way to spike something is with some metal chair sliders which are available at any home improvement store. Simply attach the slider surface to the bottom of the sub or speakers with some heavy duty exterior double sided mounting adhesive tape and place the nail side to the floor. The output and sound quality are tight and accurate easily matching and in many cases surpassing that of subs 3-5 times the cost of the Juinor. For most peoples applications I would think this sub is all they will ever need or want. It is not the most beautiful looking sub but at 9"x9" it is barely visible in your listening environment allowing it to be heard but not seen. This is a product that garners my greatest praise. It is highly recommended.

This review is written in respond to Mr. Bob Babcock's passionate review on the Jr. below. I would like to add that not every Audiophiles determine the quality of a subwoofer on SPL. Instead, the accuracy of a speaker is their primary concern. For a bigger listening area, there are bigger Sunfires. Plus, how can any one compare a boomy 10"HSU with any of the Sunfires. It is comparing a Tahoe to a BMW. Who wants to listen to a boomy speak loudly anyway.

Strength:

Remarkably small, excellent for music

Weakness:

needs a lot of tweaking, wish it had a remote

For the size, it's hard to imagine a better subwoofer. I compared the Sunfire Junior against a Paradyme and an Infinity in the same price range (but which were much larger) and it was clearer and tighter with music, which is what I use it for 90 percent of the time. My amp is a Harman Kardon AVR25 MKII driving Genesis speakers, and with the Sunfire Junior, I have way more power than I need to fill a 20 by 20 room. I was in my backyard today 50 feet from the house and I could clearly hear the thundering bass from music my kids were playing (Who let the dogs out?): wow, and only 9 inches high?? The Junior's manual explains the physics of active and passive drivers working together, but one has to hear it to believe it. When the shark was coming in the DVD version of "Jaws" all my furniture was vibrating. The only drawback I've noticed is that I've had to tweak the thing nearly every week (maybe I should have gotten the SPL meter as the manual suggested)and some music seems muddier than others but I don't want to tweak it for every CD I put on. A remote would be nice to adjust things a little depending on the type of music.

Strength:

Seemless integration with B&W 802's, just the right amount of bass for my taste

Weakness:

<25Hz- as to be expected with size sub

This sub cannot be confused with the monster subs out there, however, that is not what it was designed for. Do not expect this sub to knock pictures off your wall. I enjoy the way this sub blends with my B&W towers. It does not overpower during critical music listening yet can hit very hard in a HT role. It has accurate, sensible bass. Since I have one system, I was looking for a sub that was equally good at music and HT playback. After months of painstaking listening, this sub was my choice. I consider this the next best thing to the more expensive RELs. Since the nearest REL dealer is in Delaware, my decision was easy. If you're looking for just a HT sub, save the money and get an Infinity. However, if you like to listen to a more natural sound, check this speaker out. You will be impressed. I payed close to retail and feel that it was a good deal. At the prices mentioned above, this sub is a steal. Two of these suckers will kill a HSU 12!

Strength:

Size. Size. Size.

Weakness:

Cannot compete with 18" drivers (although it's not meant to).

I think Bob Carver not only makes superb audio equipment but is also a man with prophetic business foresight. The trend that began a decade ago, especially in the consumer market, is ergonomics in just about everything. Maybe it's due to the ever increasing world population. Everyday life for most people is not getting easier. I recently got the junior to replace my M & K MX series sub, which can produce bass second to none. But it's big and, after awhile, an annoyance to the sight. To make a long story short, my journey is that I have heard good bass, have had good equipment, but now have now decided to simplify and just be practical. In that regard, the junior is an excellent choice. I get good music without making undue sacrifise. I've been to the mountain top, but don't want to live there.

Strength:

Incredible deep tight bass!

Weakness:

Must be pre-filtered

This little sub as well as the larger models destroy HSU Research if a subsonic filter is placed in line between the preamp and the sub. Then HSU's are super subs. Perhaps a good subsonic filter in front of a HSU 1220 would destroy everything. Almost all of these suckers need a subsonic filter or they try to destroy themselves!!

Strength:

Compact size, ease of seamless installation into about any environment.

Weakness:

Placement can be tricky for best sound

Well, this is a small cabinet that works great. Sunfire's reputation is well deserved. I replaced the PSW 150 in the system above just under a week ago. It took a couple attempts at placement to eliminate a "boominess" in the room - but the time spent (less than 1 hour) was worth the effort. This littly guy blows me away. Totally outperforms the Polk unit at music and HT and easily blends with the Gemini's. The mains are still full range and my x-over is dialed at about 45 hz.

I auditioned a Velodyne, Monitor Audio and a couple other models I can't remember at the moment before deciding on the True Sub Jr.

Mostly, I can't believe how much output these subs can produce. My living room is somewhat small, triangular in shape about 15'x15'. I originally thought of going with the True Sub or two Jr.'s, but guess what. One is plenty - works perfect - slams you with movie impact if that's what you want, and really extends the Gemini monitors well.

I couldn't be happier.
