THIS SUB IS COUPLED WITH A SET OF PROAC TABLETS ON STUDIO TECH STANDS. IT SEEMS TO BLEND SEAMLESSLY WITH THEM. VERY CONTROLLED,TIGHT DEEP BASS WITH NO BOOMINESS. PLACEMENT IS CRITICAL AND SOME EXPERIMENTING WAS NECESSARY,BUT ONCE I FOUND THE RIGHT PLACEMENT,THE SOUND WAS AWESOME

Strength:

Incredible bass from a little cube!

Weakness:

Not worth buying unless your willing to make required adjustments.

I purchased this sub to use with my little Harbeth LS3/5a monitors and hated it for the first day or two due to an incredible amount of distortion and what seemed to be subsonic trash. It didn't even rate a star!

I went downstairs and got my ART 351 pro equalizer which has a subsonic filter and other good stuff. I put the Sunfire Jr in bypass and left the entire spectrum on the EQ flat. I listened with amazement as the distortion was brought under control by the filter and amazing bass took over the room seamlessly matching with my notoriously difficult LS3/5a's.

This is a great sub but I wouldn't even consider it without a subsonic filter in-line before the sub. Yes, the sub has all of the controls normal to a top-flight sub but all were useless until the "rumble" was filtered out.

With filter: 5 stars
Without filter: 0 stars

I'll base my rating on my jury-rigged setup.

Placement will kick your A$$

Well, I had a Boston Acoustics Vr500, and it was amazing for music and movies. I wanted the Sunfire MK2, but when I listened to it at a friends instrument store, it was more than I needed, so I opted for the JUNIOR.. I was disappointed when I hooked it up; was a tad boomy and missing a beat in the upper/mid bass. Then I began toying with it and moving it all over the place, changing the phase and adjusting the Crossover, and BOY can I tell you, I never IMAGINED something so small could sound so good. It takes a while, but you can do it. It still kind of lacks in the upper/mid bass area, but once you break it in, it sounds better up there. It shakes ALL the hardwood furniture in my room and rattles all vents and doors. I got the SPL meter at Radio shack and fooled with the Capacitor changes (for the meter) Bob Carver suggest in the manual and recorded a hefty 105 dB at 23 HZ and a good 108 at 35.. See if you can find one for a deal ($695). Oh, my system comprises of 3 NHT superones, 2 superzeroes, an Onkyo integra reciever and 6 disc changer. Not AUDIOPHILE stuff, but it still jams. If I had the money.... Krell..

Strength:

Strong, deep, controlled bass for digital Home Theater, Dolby Digital and DTS. Music is ok, still deep but in my room a little muddy. Oh, and the size is also a strength ofcourse, smallest I´ve ever seen.

Weakness:

No "on" or "off" switch, just "auto" on. But it works good though.

I got the Sunfire Junior two days ago, it has been going since. Burn-in is not complete ofcourse, but the Junior does´nt seem to need much of that. It plays great deep and powerful bass down into the 20-hz area.

It did take a very long time tweaking och placing it correctly in the room. At first it was way to overbearing, even with the crossover and volume set flat. But after more tweaking on the sub and also thru the processor (TagMclaren AV32R) it sounds great.

I have never had a sub before. I felt I did´nt need one since my speaker-system and electronics together play extreme bass. But not wanting to "miss" the .1 (LFE) channel from DD and DTS I decided to buy the Junior. All reviews of it here and in magazines are true.

I recommend it to everyone.

My system:
TagMclaren AV32R Digital Theater Processor
Rotel RMB-1095 THX 5-channel 200W poweramplifier
NHT VT-2 speakersystem
Harmonic Technology cables thruout

Strength:

Small size

Weakness:

Small size

This little guy is the perfect complement to my B&W CDM 7SE mains. I have the crossover set on the junior to 50 Hz, giving the mains the extra oomph necessary. I listen primarily to music, but I also watch DVD movies. The addition of the junior to my set-up (I ran my system without a sub for a year) really improved the movie-watching experience. Because of its size, you won't get pants-vibrating bass with this unit. But if you're looking for something to give you that theater feel, the Junior will do it for you. This product lists for $795 retail. I purchased it for a much more reasonable $650 mail-order. A fine product, Mr. Carver.

EXTREMELY FAST AND ACCURATE BASS. VERY POWERFUL WHEN NEEDED, CAN PLAY EXTREMELY LOAD. LISTEN TO MAHLER AND WATCH FOR THAT BASS, WOW MADE ME LITERALLY JUMP OUT OF MY SEAT. CLASSICAL MUSIC REALLY DOES MAKE A SUB WORK. DO PLAY WITH DIFFERENT LOCATIONS BECAUSE IT PAYS BIG DIVIDENDS IN THE END. MORE WORK TO SET UP BUT WELL WORTH IT. I GOT MINE FOR A STEL FROM EXTRPC IN N.Y FOR $665.00 PLUS SHIPPING. CALL THEM AT 516-359-6823 AND ASK FOR CHRIS.

Strength:

continuous level, phase, and crossover controls. multi hook up options. box size.

Weakness:

control, speed

Right out of the box I'm impressed with the power. While the sound is powerful, it is sluggish at moderate demands. And although I have not heard the baffles bottom out, it is somewhat appearent the sound takes over instead of the sub controlling the sound. It's hard to move the shear distance these baffles do and be ready for the next beat. Sunfire Jr does not quite walk the talk.

That said, more of a not-so-bad sub is better. I've got two, mainly for theatre acoustic purposes. Two Jr's is another ballgame. But at twice the price, it should be. At twice the price, I much prefer two Jrs over one MKII.

Strength:

quick, accurate, clean, convenient in size

Weakness:

placement sensitivity

I got two of them four months ago. it appeared to me this little cube is well replaced the ASW1000 in the bedroom. It is quicker and more accurate then the B&W especially in musical materials. I set the crossover at almost 100 hz. In the mid-low, it taps out every note accurately with a minor coloration at times. Matches up very well with the fronts. For HT, one is sufficently enough to fill my 12x12x9 room. However, it took me weeks to find the best spot and has the phase set correctly. On the other hand, the one in the living room with open area is obvious too little. I can spot it no metter how I set the crossover or where I place it. An up grade is a must for me. No match for the ASW2000 in accustic sense.
I agreed with its pricing weighted heavily on its size for convenience.

Strength:

Unbelievably compact: does Bob have access to Borg nano-technology?

Weakness:

Weight, extension and output at low end. In nine different installations, some of them pro-sound, the boominess was never completely elimated. But the Biggie: the price. Outrageous price for the level of actual bass.

Before someone writes this posting off as a slam, I must say I've always REVERED Bob Carver. Back in my high school days, when the other kids were dreaming about getting a car or a new bike, I lusted for a Carver Magnetic Field Amp. You know, that cool little cubical 200W monster. Never did get one, I'm afraid. But as I grew older, I did aquire several Carver Amps, one of which was the THX Certified A400X which currently drives my Monitor Audio 7i's.

I was crushed when I heard the news that Carver went out of business, so imagine my elation when I heard that Bob was back with a new company, Sunfire. I wanted to love the Sunfire subs, really. My heart wanted to embrace them, but my ears and my digital SPL meter wouldn't let me.

The Sunfire subs have garnered great critical acclaim, but a careful reading of most of the reviews will qualify that these subs, while amazing for their size, just can't compete with the larger models in terms of true deep bass at high volume. Don't take my word for it, there are dozens of full reviews of most of these Sunfire subs.

But where I must, respectfully, call "Bullsh*t" is the assertion that this little guy is fit to sit in the same room with any Hsu sub. I'm sorry, but this is unmitiagated BS. A stack of reviews, or better yet, an accurate SPL meter will reveal that a SINGLE Hsu TN 1220 with the smallest amp Hsu sells will mop the floor with even a PAIR of the TS Junior. And a pair OF 1220's with the big amp will kill a Sunfire Architectural Sub and leave the carcass by the roadside.

Which leads to my greatest criticism of the Sunfire: the price. Even if a pair of Sunfires can wax a 10" Hsu (that poster has me at a disadvantage-I've not heard the VTF-2), the 10" Hsu costs $500+shipping, while a pair of Sunfire Jr.s, depending on the discount, will set you back $1600! Tell me, is THAT value?

I mean no disrespect to that poster nor to the Sunfire company; it's just that I not only have 3 buddies with Sunfire subs, I own a pair of the aforementioned Hsu TN 1220 subs with the big amp. I can testify that the Sunfire's aren't in the same league, as can my really bummed out friends. I've got no axe to grind, but if the Sunfire was even CLOSE in output, I'd have probably bought them. They'd be fine for a small theatre or a music system that didn't listen to pipe organ, but anything else the Hsu's annihilate them.

Just my two cents worth. I hate to give the Sunfire a 2*, but I can't give 2.5, and at the price they ask I can't in good conscience warrant a 3.

Very musical compact subwoofer.Very clean output down to 30Hz.

Weakness:

Rob Babcock and his garbage boomy HSU.

Bab Cock your name says it all.

You are so full of it its smells. No it stinks.

You seem to only see SPL and more SPL.The Sunfire JR is a very high quality micro-sub.It was never intended to compete with HSU boomy whack a tonn wall shakers.

If you want output just throw a Sunfire Signature against any of your cheapo HSU tube(cardboard tubes, cost next to nothing)with any amp.
Want quality REL,M&K are all more musical than your HSUs.
Dynaudio subs are also much more musical.faster and not boomy like your HSUs.And what about the new Infinity Prelude and Intermezzo subs? They will put your HSUs to shame, way faster, defined and not a trace of boominess.
You want more output and far better quality the REVEL Performa sub will mop the floor with your boomy HSU.

And if you want all around SPL and quality no HSU can even dream of the Krell Master Reference sub will do just that.

HSU is overhyped, its good but the way you bark its like it was the very best. Its far from the best.

The Sunfire deserves 4/5,your biased bashing just unmasked you you own a HSU and probably cant aford a better sub.
