Strength:

Price, sounds great

Weakness:

None thus far

Even at $250, this sub can't be beat, but when you can find it online for less than $200 shipped, there's no reason not to get it.

Strength:

Ton's of bass, Excellent price, compact size

Weakness:

none!

This is one AWESOME sounding subwoofer! It makes things rattle in my house I've never heard rattle before when I used my other subs! This sub pumps out the bass and more than fills up my 23' x 18' (vaulted ceiling) living room. It sounds great with music and especially with DVD's. By all mean's, if you are looking for a new home subwoofer, run out and get this sub, you won't regret it! (p.s you can also pick it up at Sears, and if you don't like it, they'll take it back, even after 30 dyas, with no questions asked))

Strength:

12" woofer, cost, quality construction, sound quality with music, auto on/off, top-rear mounted volume/crossover controls (alot easier to fine tune for movies or music)

Weakness:

Could use a little boost in power output, but for the price, it's about perfect.

I had originally bought a 10" KLH sub (can't remember the exact model number) for $150 and thought I got a great deal. I was very happy at first and it did sound pretty good with movies. I have a test disc, and I noticed that after a little tuning session, it smelled like something was beginning to fry. Also it didn't sound good at all with music. Basically with music, you would hear a low end thud, but absoultely no other bass in the music track. Gene Simmons and Michael Anthony would not be pleased!
I got paranoid with all the bad reviews and took it back, and even took a $30 hit because I got rid of the box and packing materials. Oh well. It was well worth the $80 more to get a quality product in the Sony. It sounds great with movies AND music, and doesn't crap out on me when I bump up the volume. The KLH would go through some pretty scary popping/distortions when pushed. When I could get the Sony to get flaky on me, it's much more gradual. The KLH would be fine, then one more degree of volume up and crap city.
The moral of the story is:
Just spend the extra $50 (or in my boneheaded case $80) more and get a quality product in the first place. I am buy no means a die-hard audiophile, but I still want things to sound tight and true to the recording. Too much to ask?? Nope!

Strength:

Very clean sound and doesnt bottom out very easily. Simple control's and can go plenty low.

Weakness:

Size is rather large but i say the bigger the better

I was searching for a decent sub to hook up to my little shelf system that I have in my bedroom to add that bottom end to the sound spectrum and was planning on getting the KLH sub for $150 but i noticed best buy had one of the sony's on sale cause it had been opened for just $10 more so i picked it up and i am happy i did cause it sounds great. I wasnt really able to audition the sony very well cause their setup wouldnt allow me to select any music that had much bass so i just got it knowing that sony is a good brand and that they make good products. It blends nicely with my aiwa shelf unit and it should blend to just about anything with the adjustable crossover.

Strength:

Price, plenty of vibration for movies, solidly built, small foot print compare to JBL psw-110. a whopping 12" subwoofer cone similarly built like the JBL psw-110's 10" cone. Can be hook up with 2 of these subs to a sony Str-db930 for a dual stereo effect to give an earth quaking in HT experience...

Weakness:

doesn't have the solid punch of the jbl psw-110(note: the psw-110 is 150watts, while Sa-wm40 only 120watts), but comparable. Monoraul subwoofer cable hookup.

When i compared this sub with the JBL psw-110 at BestBuy, I felt the JBL had a slightly more solid punch. The JBL probably give you better sound for music listening. For movie, the Sony sub has no problem in giving you the vibration feel of all the actions on the screen. After reading all the horrible feedbacks for the JBL psw-110 here, i closed my eyes and bite this 200$ wonderful sub. I think this is Sony first powerhouse sub attempt at competing with the big boys like the JBL psw-110/112..etc. It's a monoral sub, i guess Sony designed this sub to go with their line of receivers in mind, so you can hook 2 of these to the pre-amp out from the str-db930 using subwoofer cables(one for left pre-out and one for right pre-out). It surprised all my friends in performance, and all of my friends own JBL subs. If you don't want to take a chance with the JBL sub, i highly recommend this entry level powerhouse from Sony. The Sony and the JBL are both great products, it's just that JBL had a history of reliability problem. I really like the JBL sub tho, but i didn't want to take a chance. I hope the Sony amp doesn't blow out on me anytime soon, so far so good. Congratulation Sony, another solid product.
If this sub proven it self of it worthiness, i might consider buying a second one to hook it to the right pre-out on my str-db930. Right now i have this sub on left pre-out to my str-db930. I gave it a 5 stars for value, because i guess you can't ask for more out of a 200$ 120watts sub with a whopping 12" woofer cone. I gave it a 4 stars overall rating, cause it doesn't have the solid punch of the JBL psw-110 150watts sub, but very close.

Strength:

Auto power off, phase switching, frequency adjust, shielded

Weakness:

distorst at higher volumes

I bout this sub about 2 months ago at Best Buy and was toroughly impressed. I looked at many subwoofers before this, both high end and moderate (JBL, AR, Polk, etc). I was extremelly hesitant to buy a Sony product, but there was nothing I found that could compair price/quality at $199. The next best I found to this one was almost $500 (and it was only an 8"). My only grienvance is that the bass tends to distort at higher volumes (but that may be due to me adjusting the bass on the amp/receiver). I use it with a Kenwood KRX-1000 THX receiver and a Techniques SH-500 5.1/DTS decoder. The receiver has 6 x 100W outputs and I use the deticated sub out for the woofer (RCA). I will say that when I do crank it up, the house SHAKES!! I cannot put it up past 75% otherwise I might loose paintings and pictures off the walls. I spoke to Sony regarding this woofer and they claimed it was one of their best and a high end in their eyes. The sub hit the market in April. Overall, a good quality product for the middle of the road audio enthusiast!

Strength:

Auto Power On/Off, Phase Switching, Very Deep Bass

Weakness:

If you don't have it positioned right, it sounds poor.

I just purchased this Sub and let me tell you it is great, I listened to a multitude of Subs, actually to tell you the truth: I saw this Sub about 2 weeks ago, researched it, compared it, and bought it. I did check out the Yamaha line up of Subs, JBL, Infinity, and numerous others, but the deep rumble of this one blew me away. It really brings together your home theater system with full rich complete sound by pumping out rich deep bass. This is a must have for any one looking for a first Sub, or even an audio enthusiast such as myself looking for a great mid ranged Subwoofer.

Note to others: If you are not getting deep bass, try moving the sub to the side of the room, never the center, there should then be a perfect spot in the room where the bass hits you. This is probably why most peaople say that the bass from a subwoofer sounds weak.

Weakness:

could use a little more power.

Sony has surprised me with this sub.It has a clean, deep, tight sound.not the punchy or boom sound associated with some subs.I was hesitant to even hear this sub because I always thought of sony as a low end mass production of products, but this sub sounds great and blends in nice with my wharfdale diamond vI speakers.

Strength:

12" Cone, Price, Sony reliability(hopefully)

Weakness:

Not as much power as I wanted but still plenty to shake the room you are in

Great price on this unit. I bought it based on the reviews on this website. I made the right choice. Both movies and music sound great. Just make sure to put it up against a wall to get the maximum effect from it. For the money, I dont think you can go wrong with this subwoofer. I just hope reliability doesnt become an issue but it doesnt seem like it has with anyone else so far. 5 stars
