Strength:

Accurate, inexpensive

For the price, you cannot buy a better sub. Bass sounds very tight and rich. Specs say it goes down to 20hz, which may be true, but not at a decent volume (I suspect its probably closer to 30 or maybe 35, I'm no expert). I highly, highly recommend this sub to anyone searching for a sub under $250.

After reading the reviews for the KLH 10" sub (ASW10)I decided not to take the chance of either having it fail or even burn down the house, so I returned it to Costco (I am not going to say anything bad about the KLH sub since it worked O.K. for me). After reading the reviews for the Sony I decided to go hear it at Best Buy. The conditions for auditioning equipment are not the greatest at BB, so I didn't want to judge the sub's performance at the store, and went ahead and bought it. No regrets at all. As soon as I connected this sub and heard the first few songs it was clear this was a much better quality unit than the KLH. I had to stuff the KLH with polyfill in order to make it sound decent (boomy and muddy before that). No mods need to be made to the Sony. Right out of the box the bass is tight and well defined. The volume only needs to be at about 1/3 in my 15 x 20' room, and the sub does not distort at this level with higher than average music volumes (I don't like it too loud anyway). Movies sound great with this sub. Sound effects sound very realistic without any irritating boominess. I didn't think that a 12" woofer could sound this tight, especially with music. Bass guitar notes and kick drums sound great. Anyone who says that a sub under $250.00 will not sound good has not heard this one. As far as reliability goes it's too early to tell, but I get the feeling just from the look and feel of this sub that it's going to last.

Well I got a wild hair up my ass this weekend and decided to upgrade my home theater. I was had the same system now for over 3 years and decided it was about time to step up. I am more of a computer geek than an audiophile but I do appreciate good sound. I love my polk front and rears and deciced that my polk center channel just wasnt cutting it anymore. I have been using the TV speakers to help out the lack of sound from the center channel. I purchased the infinity bu-120 sometime ago and thought that It sounded pretty good. I really had nothing to compare it to until I heard my friends system, he had the sony 12' sub and it blew my mind. Not only was the sound a ton tighter and responsive, but it wasnt the least bit muddy. Now I dont like spending tons of cash on something unless I totally fall in love with the thing. And the SOny 12' only being $199 blew me away. So I picked up the SA-WM40 at Best buy as well as the STR-DE945 reciever and came home. I first hooked the sub up to my old reciever (the oldschool sony egg one) and it sounded sensational. I was blown away. Given yes, I have heard better but it cost TONS more. With the combination of my new reciever, SA-WM40 , and the sony center channel my home theater is a dream. Couldt be happier.

Strength:

Loud, awesome bass! price

Weakness:

NONE!!

I am doing a Home Theatre setup. This fit right into place. It may not have the most power, but it is awesome for the price. I picked it up on eBay for $127.50. The seller charged me only $10 for 2-day shipping! It was an awesome deal, but I would have easily paid 300 for this thing. If you are Bill Gates, then maybe you have the money for a $1000 subwoofer, but otherwise the Sony is your best bet.
Here is my setup:
Goky Melody-3 (big, tall, fairly nice) mains $250 (Japanese found for a very good price)
Goky Melody-2 rears $125
JBL S-center $175
Sony SA-WM40 subwoofer $138
Sharp 27" TV $190
either JVC XV-525BK or Philips DVD711AT (need help deciding please email me if you have an opinion on these)
