Strength:

Low cost, loud bass

Weakness:

There is a loud hum and lots of interference through the AC cord.

I had the older model Infinity BU-2 for three years and loved it, until the driver was blown I paid $350 for it three years ago which I thought was a steal considering it retailed for $500. When I saw the Infinity BU120 for around $150 at Mercata I had to get another one just because of the price. I actually like the BU-2 better even though it is only powered by 100 watt amp. There is no hum with the older unit. The new BU120 picks up a lot of interference through the AC electrical cord. When everything is turned off, I hear a faint noise from a radio station that is being picked up by the sub! I've tried plugging it into several different outlets including the back of my receiver (so that it is turned off when I turn off my receiver) but noise and humming still come through when the power is on. And yes, mine is definitely noticeable from way across the room. I feel this should not be acceptable from a company like Infinity; but I've heard they are going downhill anyway. I've always liked Infinity because of their sound and affordable prices (usually steals) but I won't continue to buy their stuff if they start producing junk (which I think the BU120 is bordering on). But then again, you get what you pay for, and I know that there is nothing out there that will compete for this price. It is hard to put a rating on this sub because for the money it deserves a lot higher than a 5, but for the quality, it doesn't look so good compared to other brands.

Strength:

Long Bass Notes sound well, home theatre

Weakness:

The hum, "rock" music

This sub is pretty descent considering what you can buy it for. I really enjoy it for home theatre, and for music such as rap that has long extended bass notes it performs well (gets a bit muddy real low). For rock type music it is just poor though, it cant keep up with the beating of drums, or even a few good bass notes in a row. The hum is there, but you do have to be within about 2 feet to hear it, so it is not really a problem.

I just received my BU-120 from NetMarket also. It arrived in six business days by ground. I, like some of the others in this forum, also ordered the BU-2 and received the "new & improved" 1999 model instead. I'm very pleased with the BU-120 overall and even more pleased to receive the newer model. The BU-2 has a 100w amp while the BU-120 has the same size (12") speaker, but has a 150w amp. I don't know if there are any other differences, except that it has two ports in the back, while the photo for the BU-2 showed one.
My first impressions: It sounded 'muddy' until I flipped the "phase" switch on the back. Then instantly it was music to my ears! I followed the setup instructions in the manual, for experimenting with the volume & crossover frequency controls.

I played some hard rock, some techno, some 70's funk, and some classical chamber music to test with music. The sound was solid and a great compliment to my Klipsch KSB 3.1's in a 12'x16' room. At half-volume I could feel the floor and my body resonate with the bass! With a little minor repositioning (a few inches here & there) of the sub in a corner, it was good tight 'thump-thump' bass. I backed it down a little for the classical with excellent results.

I then tried it in Dolby Surround with my rear speakers on, with similarly pleasing results. I'm looking forward to watching a good movie with it.

I've found many of the reviews in this forum very educational and useful. I'm glad to be able to share a review myself. I was tempted to buy the Klipsch KSW-200, but I couldn't justify twice the price for the same size sub. I have to give the BU-120 a five-speaker rating for the sound and the value.

Hum Noise

This is an excellent speaker if you can get for less than
$200. There is a hum noise present. Even with a line conditioner the noise is there.

The problem is easily fixed by taking it in to a service
center. Quite annoying but if the hum bothers you that much
and it is still under warranty, then why not?

This is a great speaker for a small/mid size room. I don't think it will do well with louder volumes and in a large
room(distortion will be very present).

The Sound of the BU-120 is great for the price you pay. If you want better, than expect to spend $800 and more. Or get this wonderful value speaker.

Overall, it is a great speaker and Infinity has the
EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE which is a plus!

Strength:

Great for movies

Weakness:

Not as great for music

I got this sub for $143 shipped from shop.theglobe.com and I am really glad I did. Awhile back, I was gonna buy a lesser sub for MUCH more money from Best Buy, but I decided to wait.

In Predator and The Hunt for Red October, it was awesome, I was blown away.

In music wasn't as great, but still really good

Reliability

I bought this sub back in January, 2000 through Mercata for about $160 with shipping. It seemed like a good deal at the time. I read audioreview about this sub before my purchase and it rated over a 4 which seemed about right for the price. As you can see from recent reviews, we are now in that 4-6 months past Christmas period and many of the Infinity subs (including mine)are dropping like flies. All I can say is resist the urge to purchase one of these. The service center I took mine to said they are seeing lots of the BU-120 subs for the same "burn out" problem. Unfortunately, I found out too late. I love the Infinity CC-3 center channel speaker but avoid their subs.

Price, sound, quality

None so far :)

So far I have really been impressed with this sub. The only other sub I have used is the Harman Kardon which came with my computer. It always made an airy noise and it never sounded right. Not with the infinity though. It sounds really nice and it will work great for our home. I hear no noise at all when the sub is powered on but not in use. That was worrying me at first but I am glad I went ahead and purchased it. It's primary use is for home theater. It ended up costing me 122 shipped from shop.theglobe.com (with a 20 dollar coupon) I recommend this to anyone with a limited budget but wanting a quality sub.

Amp blows up

It worked great until yesterday when the amp died and it decided to make loud machine gun noises in my living room. Given another chance I would not buy this sub, spend the extra money and get a Velodyne or something nicer.
