Strength:

Sounds great in the first 12 months

Weakness:

Too bad after the warranty expired, first the rubber ring came off then amps blew couple weeks later.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy Infinity subs but it makes nice speakers. I have the RS-5 and cc-1 for the front speakers and center. Sounds great but too bad the sub went out too quickly.

Strength:

great when working

Weakness:

amp blows up

This is my third review in this thread, I have a comment, and a question.
I got mine back from repair to-day, only two weeks.
Works just fine now, and there is no longer any discernable hum.

My question is to others who have had this sub repaired. Does the "fix" last, or does the amp blow up again and again, and unto ages of ages?

Strength:

Nice powerful Bass

Weakness:

Cheaply made, Not reliable

Follow up to previous review.
Well,
I was also feeling very smug after reading the reviews here, I had my sub for almost 3 years w/o a problem. And then, just like so many of you, and soon to be the rest of you, it blew. I didn't bother with repair. I canned it. I went out and bought a DefTech, which in comparison is a much superior sub. Do yourself a favor, avoid Infinity powered items. As for other Infinity speakers, I love em.

Strength:

Good HT bass for the money

Weakness:

Same amp blowing problem that will ultimately affect all owneers, and hum.

Mine blew exactly three weeks after the warranty expired. Until then I was pleased with this $145 bargain sub, bearing in mind that this is nothing more than just that. I actually tried soldering a new capacitor to replace the blown one to no avail, and started shopping for a new one.
Someone here suggested I write Harmon International (via email link on their site) to see what they might do. Well, despite it being out of warranty an me taking the thing apart and messing with the circuit board, they said that since this is a known problem that they would still fix it under warranty--but with a cap on the labor expense. At any rate, it's in the shop now and will cost me around $50 to get repaired. Among the pieces they are replacing on the board is the power transformer, hopefully the cause of the hum too. I was surprised at this unusual (for the industry) extension of customer service to me. Not every brand stands behind their product in this manner.

Strength:

sounds pretty good for home theater and music

Weakness:

constant, annoying HUMMMMM!!!

The loud hummm just will not go away. Got rid of it fast. Had purchased from Uncle's Stereo (www.unclestereo.com) in NYC by mail order. They took it right back (was within the 30 days return window, otherwise it was to "factory servicing". Good thing I avoided that because it seems, according to other posts here, that that accomplishes little.

Spent a little more money and got a Klipsch 12. A very good powered sub with only a very faint hum (you gotta be very close to hear it).

I have had this subwoofer for over month now. I am pleased with it. It has a nice 12 inch woofer made with plastic and rubber instead of the cheap foam and paper woofers that many other models in the same price range come with. The woofer works the BEST with music. It works well with movies as well. The woofer worked well with the DTS cd's I have. For any Dolby Digital or DTS movies the woofer needs to be turned down. My reciever can control it with a remmote, so I have not had a problem with that. I have heard no buzzing what so ever. I could not rate it 5 stars because the woofer bottoms out on several instances during movies I have watched. One example was the Armegeddon DVD. I found that adjusting the crossover helped. With some sound effects I can pump up the woofer to the point were it might be mistaken for a earthquake. Others bottom out the woofer with minimal volume. Overall the woofer is worth the money, and better than the competition for the same price. I got it from www.shop4.com for $230 to my door.

This is some follow up information after living with the BU-120 since April 99.I have this sub hooked up to a Yamaha 1105 with Infinity RS-5 fronts, CC-3 center and RS-1 rear. Overall I have been satisfied the the bass output and performance but I have noticed that the sub emmits a humming sound when not playing music. I first noticed this when I walked into my music room one morning when the ambient sound was very low. I have tried everything I can think of to stop this to no avail, with the exception of unpluging the unit.Does anyone have this same problem and how did you resolve it?Is this a sign of impending death? Sell it now or use it as a door stop later?

Strength:

I cant remember any

Weakness:

Low level hum, frequent pops, no off switch, picks up radio signals, amp died after 4 months

Just like they say, you get what you paid for. My 2nd biggest mistake (the biggest being buying this unit) was not returning it before 30 days. As stated in the weaknesses section, I have experienced nothing but problems. After about 35 days of putting up with the hum, I decided to bring it in to the repair tech. They were unable to get a hold of the parts from Harmon Kardon to fix the sub, so I took it home unrepaired. The amplifier died one day soon after.

Since then, I have purchased a Boston Acoustics PV600 for $150 more than the Infinity. The Boston looks much better, sounds unbelievable for a 10 inch sub, and was WELL worth the extra $$$. It hasn't yet bottomed out on me, no matter how much I push it, and it blends in perfectly with my home theater setup.

Strength:

Sounds fine.

Weakness:

None that I noticed.

I have a system with all-infinity speakers. The subwoofer works fine so far, I've had it for about six months. I did notice a hum when it was powered off so I hooked it up to the power on the back of my amplifier and that fixed that. I find it sounds muddy - if I turn it up too loud. If it set it about right, it sounds just fine. Backs up the bass pretty well. My Infinity RS-5 speakers have good bass so it doesn't make an enourmous amount of difference but it does help quite a bit with techno. I found it makes the best sound in the middle of the room away from walls.

Strength:

Very loud! Great for Home Theater, good with Music.

Watched The Matrix again on DVD and OH MY GOD!!! What a difference. I don't hear the hum some people are complaining about. If I sit in the living room when it is completely silent right next to the sub I can hear the clock ticking across the room, but no hum from the sub. I remember the manual said something about plugging it into the wall, not into a power strip or the receiver. Maybe that is causing the hum for others. Dolby Digital and DTS are amazing. Music is good, you have to play around with the settings and placement to get it to sound just right. once the Christmas tree comes down I'll have more room to try different locations. I can only put it at half volume, otherwise the whole house shakes, I set it lower for music. I got this unit from Mercata.com too $165. Worth every penny I paid.
