I received this sub yesterday from Mercata for US$150 (came up to CDN$300 including taxes and brokerage fees), and they sell the BU-1 (8", 50-watt amp) at Future Shop for $379.99 + taxes!

I couldn't have asked for a better price, but especially for better value than this!

It sounds great, produces no distortion and best of all rattles the house! It's definitely a GREAT sub!

I have also noticed a very little hum when the unit is turned off, but it's so barely noticeable that I don't know what some people are complaining about! Just pull the damn plug out when you're not using it!

Strength:

Awsome sounding, clean power.

Weakness:

The slight hum at low volumes is noticable, but its tollerable.

This subwoofers really pounds hard for a 12" I am really impressed with it for $150.00 after the $50.00 rebate from Mercata.
I plan on buying a second one to add on for more sound. I currently have 2 MTX 12" floor speakers for my main channel and I am planning on using the subs for speaker stands once I get my second one. I also plan on buying two pairs of Paradigm Atoms for the front and rear channels and a possible center channel.
Great value for 12" sub, would recommend to all.

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

No on/off switch. Slight low level hum.

For the price (less than $200) this is a fine product. Does a good job with basic DVD/Digital systems. It is ok with music, although the sound can be muddled at times.

Hey, this sub rocks the world. I want to buy a 2nd as a gift so ANYONE who's interested GO TO MERCATA now and bid down the price !!!! Ends in 12 hours. HURRY ! It's a steal at $150 ! And Don't pay any attention to the pansies whining about the low hum - it's not there, man. What is there is clear solid DEEP bass.

Strength:

Powerful Output and Price.

Weakness:

Low hum while receiving no signal.

Just received my 120 today from Mercata, paid $159. Hooked it up for a trial run with a set of KLH 990A's. Blew me away. From by basement it made my whole house rattle. It made the 990's rival any small speakers from Bose. I played my favorite music which is light jazz, and it sounded great. The bass was tight and not pounding.

If you utilize the volumn control on the sub correctly music as well as movies can sound superb.

The low hum while the unit is inactive is very faint and can be controlled by plugging the unit into a low priced surge protector and switched off while not in use.

I do not know how long Mercata will continue to allow these speakers to go at this price, but to anyone that can take advantage of it will find you can not get a better powered sub at this price.

My overall rating is 4 stars due to the low hum.

If my unit sours, I will update my comments.

Strength:

cheap, very cheap, relatively small for 12in, not butt ugly like some lowerend subs.

Weakness:

little muddy sound, very very faint hum

Well.. picked this sub up for $156 with freeshipping from mercata. You just can't beat it for the price. If your looking at a sub below $250 you prolly won't find a better one. It looks nice, is in a relatively small box for a 12in sub, but can still serve as a foot rest/drink holder. It sounds pretty nice in dvd movies, however playing music it is a little muddy. Which is mostly fixed with a few simple adjustments, but still a little muddyness. As everybody says, there is a slight hum. The hum almost made me not buy this subwoofer. However when i saw it for $156 i took it. The hum isn't even noticeable in my room until i get my ear about 2in from it. It is quieter than any fan, or any refrigerator, or pretty much anything else that makes noise. In order to hear it while sitting 5ft from it you would have to be in a completely quiet room with absolutely nothing running. So if ya plan on putting this in a study, don't but in a living room or bedroom it is fine. Anyways, for the price it can't be beat.

Strength:

Good Bass from a fairly Small Package. Great in an Apt.

Weakness:

HMMMMM, How to describe that strange noise in my living room? Wonder if it doubles a one of those ultrasonic bug devices?

I got this thing to my door for 150.32 from Mercata, that alone gives it a great score. Music is a bit muddy, but bass rivals the pounding on the ceiling from my downstairs neighbor while we watch a DVD. I have heard many better subs but none better for the money. My system is a Nakamichi AV8 with RS3's up front, CC# center and RS1 in the rear. Phillips 850 DVD running throught and Audio Magic Digital Coax. I get tighter bass with my RS3 alone but for waking the neighbors it's a great sub.

Strength:

price and decent tighter bass comparing to other lower end subs.

Weakness:

slight hummmmmmm!

Just got one from Mercata for a good price at $150 and of course after its $50 buying credit. I previously had a DCM SW10 sub. even it was rated at 100 continuous watts which should handle up to 150 watts as claimed by a Circuit City Sale Person. Its bass was weaker and of course not as tight as this bu120. they both are about the same size in dimensions and inputs/outputs. Just like the DCM, it will require many adjustments with the cross-over freq, phase, and volume to find the sweet spot for the room. For the hum, suprisingly the DCM has the problem as the bu120. I guess lower end subs don't get the attention of the engineers of eliminating or cancelling or insulating this noise like the higher priced subs. but this should not be an excuse. Anyway, this is a good sub for the price. It brings my ht and music to life. This is not a perfect sub so it won't get the perfect score. But don't get me wrong, this is a good little sub. I am going to enjoy it!

Muddy lows, annoying hummmmmmming

Infinity has produced a decent sub here. I'm not too happy with its range and muddyness playing low frequencies, but for $200, what can you expect?? You're not going to get a nice tight sound from this thing, but it will rattle your windows. If you can afford a Velodyne, Energy or Klipsch, I think you'll be happier with them, but the BU-120 is a good buy as a second sub or to fit a tight budget.
(PS. if you're seriously considering this sub, look at www.mercata.com, they usually have it on a power-buy and you can get it for around $200).
