Strength:

Fills out the deep bass frequencies not present in my Infinity RS5's. Sounds great with most DVDs.

Weakness:

Just like what most other people have experienced, the amp blew! What started out as an annoying hum, after a year with no initial problems, gradually got louder and louder. Eventually I had to unplug the sub, and when I tried to plug it back in the hum became so loud it could have shattered my windows.

I enjoy my Infinity speakers, with the exception of the BU120 powered sub. Infinity really needs to start standing behind this product and realizing that there is something wrong with it's design. My estimate just came in at $130 to fix this thing, which is about half the original cost of the Sub. A one year warranty is a joke when the majority of them fail shortly after the year is up. My suggestion to Infinity,"RECALL, RECALL, RECALL"!!

Weakness:

Hums

Product has burnt out twice in two years. 1st lasted 9 mos.
2nd 12.5 mos. Use is very casual perhaps 2/3x per week for
1 to 2 hours at a time. Crackling and humming became apparent in both units after limited use. With no on/off
switch the only way to silence the unit was to unplug it.
We have purchased other products of this manufactuer and found them to be of high quality.

Strength:

Good Value, matches other infinity products well, ease of use, strong bass

Weakness:

Can be overpowering--sometimes heavy bass gets muddy

I do not know what people are talking about with the amp blowing up. I have had this unit for over 6 months, used daily, and have never had any problem what so ever. I imagine that the problem could stem from trying to make the sub do too much. The lack of an on/off switch was somewhat concerning at first, but I figured Infinity did this to prevent the turn on thump that occurs anytime the sub is plugged in or unplugged. Also, I have never noticed any hum coming from the sub--people might want to check grounding and isolation of components. I have found this to be a great investment and would buy it again if i needed to.

Strength:

Low price, powerful

Weakness:

Hums while on and while off (and not because it forgot the words), explosive pops when unplugged, indistinct bass.

Well, that's what I get for spending $150 at Mercata and expecting an audiophile product. I used it for around 6 months and sold it - its boomy, indistinct bass, combined with a constant low-level hum (you know, the kind they can either claim to not hear or that they all do it, it's normal) made it impossible to live with after a while. Do not - repeat - do NOT use this subwoofer in an audio-only application. If you have a modest home theater budget, and can find one under $150, you might well be happy. Just don't ever unplug it, and don't put it in a room where anyone needs to sleep.

Strength:

Low price, good bass

Weakness:

Amp blowing up; loud pops when you unplug it; and the fear that this thing is going to literally explode

I reviewed this product back in November of 1999, the day after I received the unit. I still believe that this sub has good bass and can rattle whatever you want, but after the amp blew up about 9 months later, I decided that this is definitely not good of a deal as I originally thought!

Finally I got it fixed under warranty, but not before MANY phone calls to Infinity Systems, Mercata and Tops Electronics in Massachussets. Get this: I bought this sub from Mercata, which is (or until they went out of business a few days ago) in Washington State, but I live in Canada. When this damn thing blew up, I had to call Infinity Systems, which referred me to some place in Montreal (I wish I could remember the name; they're the ones who take care of Infinity Systems stuff in Canada), whose moronic, impolite yahoos answering the phone told me to call the US line again.

After many calls (sometimes waiting more than 20 minutes just to get to talk to some other incompetent morons at Infinity who didn't understand anything), I was told that I would have to get my unit serviced in the States, since that's where it originated from (but on the back of the sub, it says "Made in Canada"), and that the closest place was in Massachussetts, about 400 miles away! If I'd get it fixed in an authorized repair centre in Canada, they wouldn't pay.

I talked to the people at Tops Electronics who asked me to fax a copy of my receipt to them, and that they would check with Infinity, after Infinity had told me that it could be repaired there if I paid for the shipping. At Tops, one man was very nice, and even though I just talked to him a couple of times, he remembered me; whereas some rude bimbo called Debbie to whom I talked about 10 times never recalled our past conversations every time I talked to her. I'm sure they get a lot of long-distance calls from French Canadians 400 miles away. Anyway, they called me back later and told me that Infinity would NOT honour the warranty, because Mercata was not authorized to sell their products!!! When I purchased the sub, Mercata WAS an authorized dealer!! So after more calls at Mercata and Infinity, I finally got them to understand the situation.

Finally I shipped it to Tops, and they fixed it under warranty. I was supposed to pay for the shipping back, but it seems that Infinity took the bill. Good thing! I had specifically asked Tops to call me when the repairs were done so that I could choose how to send it back to me, but they called me to tell me that they had already sent it out! Plus, I don't know if it's Tops' or UPS's fault, but my sub came back with one leg broken.

The unit? Works well now. I'm more careful with it, now that the warranty's expired. It doesn't hum as much, and I don't unplug it anymore, since I'm afraid it's going to blow up the amp again. Good bass... when it works!

Infinity's service was pretty bad, except for the guy who finally told me that they would honour the warranty. When I call a customer service number, I want to talk to someone; not listen to elevator music and carols for 20 minutes.

For the price I paid (150$ US), I think I got what I deserved, but for the MSRP of $499 stated above, there's no more of a better explanation than: rip-off.

Infinity should quit producing subs until they can make ones that actually work right.

Infinity must be embarassed to read the reviews on their subs on this site. They embarassed themselves.

I use the BU-120 in my home theater system. I got all my infinity speakers from www.sounddistributors.com - great prices and a great company. The BU-120 is a 12" powered sub that cranks. I have a 15' by 18' room and it fills it with BASS tha you can feel. It also has a volume control so you can adjust it to match the rest of your speakers. Buy one you will love it.

The BU-120 is awsome! Definately the best bargain subwoofer out there. Like many other enthusiasts out there, I initially ordered the BU-2 from Netmarket and surprisingly received the upgraded model BU-120! I believe the BU-120 has replaced the BU-2, but the folks at netmarket don't know that! So order yourselves a BU-2 through netmarket and you too can receive a great surprise at your doorstep, not to mention, saving a little cash too!
For the price and rattling abilities, I give it....

I have had my BU120 for about three weeks, and I could not be happier. I purchased it from NetMarket for $248.00. This was the lowest price I could find. I was able to find a perfect corner behind my TV, and you can really feel the action. I previewed this unit at Circuit City, and it was by far the best sounding subwoofer they had. Although the speaker is not covered on the bottom of the unit, as long as it makes it through shipping this should not be a problem. I have mine in a 300 square foot room, and it has more than enough thump turned up half way.
