Strength:

Verry clear sound and bass for speakers meant for voice only.Infact speakers sound like if they were big speakers.

Weakness:

Well handling power could be a little higher but I have not had any problems of wanting more power.

When I went to buy some speakers for voice I found these sony and since they were the less expensive I went and heard them..Well these speakers sound xcelent for the price, sound is even better than ones double the price, and if the speakers dont sound better they sound a lot more clear than the others. If you dont want to spend a lot of money and want to speakers for Dvd and Music then this is the best buy for clear sound and good bass, Infact I dont see any reason to buy more xpensive ones but if you dont belive me and dont want to buy these ones they buy The sony SS-MF415 wich should cost you 250 each. If you think that Boos Is better and you want top of the line sound in your home then the best speakers you could buy are $_,000 each and they are Sony ES SS-M9ED go here and see them http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/generic/homeaudioes/esloudspeakers/index.shtml

Strength:

Excellent price to performance ratio, Sony quality (that's a good thing if there are any doubts), excellent mix of bass, mids and highs.

Weakness:

None really, just dont' go trying to put more than the reccomended wattage in.

I was working on a system for my dorm room this summer, so I went to Best Buy and got these speakers. I paid about 200 dollars for them (speakers+warrenty+tax). BTW, I would reccomend getting a warrenty on them, it doesn't cost much, and so many of us liek to push our speakers to see how much they can take... and then wefind out exactly how much... Anyway, these speakers have been a pleasure to listen to since day one. I started out by hooking them up to an Aiwa mini-system that put out only a good 10 watts per channel. It sounded great, but just wasn't doing it for me, so now I've got some sort of Radio Shack amp. Since the manual for it is long gone, I have no idea how much power the thing puts out, but I'm guessing between 75 and 100 watts per channel. The two pair up great. I get crystal clear sound, with some very impressive bass.
As with so many other things, you get what you pay for in speakers, generally. These speakers, however are an exception. Sony could easily get away with selling the pair for 50 dollars more. Like so many others have said, I'll also say, don't put too much power into these babies, they don't like it too much. I've tried it with various other amps, and I always get great sound. Living in a dorm room, space is definitely at a premium, but these Sonys fit in really nicely.
To conclude my review, If you are looking for a really good pair of speakers, for a good price, get these Sonys. If your looking to spend a lot of money for the same quality... I hear Bose has some stuff... Anyway, I hope I've helped you all.

I bought these at Best Buy for 139 and for the money they sound pretty darn good... the highs are a bit tinty, and the speaker cabinet is constructed "quickly" on the back side. Also, doesn't feature gold plated inputs (spring loaded inputs on the back)... however, for the money, they are a good deal and would work great for anyone who is just starting out their system.

Strength:

Good sound, Great bass, the 3-way design, and price.

Weakness:

May not be suitable for large rooms. Sometimes distort under heavy bass (you'd want a sub anyway).

These speakers nearly knocked me over the day I bought them. They cost me $79 each at Best Buy and I must say, these don't perform the way you would think $79 speakers would perform. The bass is incredible for the size. The mids and highs are also very good on these speakers. I have them hooked up to the sony STR-DE335 receiver in stereo mode, so they're getting 100 watts a piece and they seem to be handling it just fine. I only wish that I had purchased the 515's because my den is too big for these speakers. Still, if you're on a tight budget, you can't go wrong with these beauties. They are incredible for the price.

Strength:

Compact Size, Clear highs, good base for 6.5" woofer

Weakness:

muffled mids

I'm impressed with most of what I'm getting out of these speakers. After all I only paid $119 for a pair. However
I'm dissapointed with the mid's. I was wondering if anyone
has done a crossover upgrade on these. It really seems to
help the MF515's. Basically these are the the same speakers minus one woofer. Until I figure out what I want to do with the mids, I'll be using them as my rear channels for the HT setup.

Strength:

Great sound after the mod described in the Sony 515 model.

Weakness:

None after mod

To everyone writing in this forum,
First of all this is not a review of the 315's. I want everyone to know , who is buying this speaker, that the crossover modification will work for this (described in the 515's). Anyone who goes to this forum should read the reviews from the 515's and learn how to do the crossover. the crossover modification from the 515's will work for this speaker and will improve treble, midrange and tighten up the bass. If you are not totally satisfied with your sound then you should check out the 515 forum. The 515 reviews include the correct part to get and how to perform the crossover. Also, the crossover was really meant to be used for the 315's because they only have one woofer. Because the 515's have 2 woofers you have to mount 2 wires to one woofer out put on the crossover board. What this means is that it is easier to rewire the sony 315's. Also Bob P. has pictures and instructions on how to do the crossover making it seem a lot easier. All you have to do for the crossover is beable to take the grills and drivers out, unwire what they have, soder and put he drivers back on. The hardest part, as described in the 515's, is mounting the crossover. Just email me at DolbyDigital51@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

As they say it in the 515 reviews "it's the difference between night and day, and it nearly triples the value of your speaker." I will put my 515's and their price up against any $2000 electrostatic Martin Logan Speaker system, or any $1500 Definitive Technology tower speakers.

Good luck!

Strength:

Price and the sound you get for it.

Weakness:

None really. Just a little hissing sound when listening to DVD's but for music they sound great.

I was looking for a good pair speakers to use as the back pair in my home theater system. Boy did I make a good choice, ofcourse they are better one's out there. But like alot of people I didn't have a lot of money to spend on some speakers. And at a 139.00 for the pair you cant go wrong.
My system:
Sony KP-43T75 (TV)
Sony SS-CN490 (center channel)
Sony SS-MF515 (front speakers)
Sony SS-MF315 (back speakers)
Sony SA-WM490 (subwoofer)

Strength:

Cheap, good highs and mids

Weakness:

bass could be better, could be a little taller

These speakers are great for somebody on a tight budget such as myself. The bass is somewhat lacking at lower volumes, I've found that you have to turn it up halfway into them to get decent bass output. But for 6" woofers the bass is better than expected. The mids and highs are excellent, and are very clear even at higher volumes. A sub will basically take care of any issues with the bass, and for the price you pay you can't beat these.

Strength:

Good Cabinet Height, Mids & Highs, PRICE!

Weakness:

Cabinet construction. (Specifically materials used). Lows aren't very pronounced, but that's what a sub is for.

As many previous posts have stated, the bass output of these is on the weak side, escpecially when listened side by side to the 515's. I knew this prior to buying and didn't mind. I wanted an alternative to replace my front satellites with something that had more depth and realism and less of that typical brassy sound sat's put out. Plus, you don't really need to buy speaker stands saving even more. When coupled with a complete system including a center, a sub, and 2 rears, these make an excellent choice for home theater and not a bad choice for audio listening. For the price they are a great bargain and will allow you to grow with them for the future by putting them in the rear as your system progresses.
