Just bought the 750THX left, right and center speakers to go along with my M&K LCR-55 rears. The system sounds great. My receiver is the Yamaha RX-V995. I also have the M&K V-75MKII sub. Couldn't be happier with the sound for both music and movies. The speakers are very natural sounding...I am amazed how good they sound every time I turn the system on.

Strength:

Incredible imaging and detail

Weakness:

Best paired with a good subwoofer. I auditioned the M&K V1250 and it worked fine with movies, but recommend one of their other subs instead if you like music also (like the MX125 MKII)

I've been shopping for a home theater speaker system to replace one I patched together. To date, I've auditioned multiple models from each of the following brands: Atlantic Technology, Boston Acoustics, Definitive Technology, Gallo, NHT, Paradigm, and PSB. Quite simply, none of these come close to the imaging and detail achieved by the M&K 750 THX-select system. I could not believe the superiority of this set-up compared with other similarly priced (and often more expensive) arrangements. It works well with music and movies.

When I first auditioned them, the salesman had a $3000 sunfire hooked up to the speakers. My first thought was, "Oh sure, that's why they sound so good". So I asked him to hook-up a cheaper amp. He put a $450 Yamaha in place of the sunfire. He also attached the really cheap interlink cables that you get with any receiver. He said to me "If this doesn't convince you of how good these speakers are, nothing will".

Surprisingly, even with this inexpensive equipment, the speakers lost little of their finesse and charm. They are truly amazing. Make sure you check them out before buying anything else. I can't wait to save up the money and get my own !!!

My only recommendation is to replace the V1250 subwoofer with one of M&K's dual driver sub-woofers. The V1250 sounds fine with movies, but dull (boomy) with music. The dual-driver subs are much tighter.

You can save substantially if you buy on-line. Check out tecdistributors.com or adelcom.com. The marketplace on audioreview.com also features used equipment at great prices.

Strength:

Clarity, Imaging, Pacing, Little (if any) Coloration, Price point.

Weakness:

I've only listened to these for a few weeks, thus far the only weakness I can honestly discern is that poorly recorded material is detailed as it was recorded -- these don't hide recording flaws.

I actually do not have the entire 750THX set up. I have the LCR 750THX as front left, right and center, LCR-55's as surrounds, and the MX-700 sub. Yes, I went big on a more musical sub. The 1250 sub that is recommended for the 750THX system seemed to me to be on the thumpy side for music.

I am driving this system with a Denon 4800 (I can't say enough positive things about that receiver as well) through six/ninths copper connects. My CD source is an old Sony carousel player (my HK 8550 died a few days after I brought the M&K system home) and is out for repairs (needless to say, I have few positive things to say about HK right now). For DVD I am running a Sony 530 through Monster fiber optic cable. The room in which I have this system set up is small (about 13" x 20"), with a high ceiling (10"), is carpeted and furnished with a variety furniture (including a fabric sofa), and has relatively unadorned plaster walls.

How to begin? The LCR 750s up front are a dream for the price. Listing at $335 a pop ($350 for the shielded center), they are jaw dropping. The soundstage is very large, imaging is precise, and pacing is astonishing. I found myself going through my entire CD collection, and hearing new things in many. These speakers have very little color, and allow the musical Denon 4800 receiver to shine.

On the "Girl from Ipanema" (Astrud Gilberto Verve Compact Jazz CD), the voices are rendered clearly, and with solidity. You can usually hear the male vocals bottom out speakers in this price range, although the 750s handled the chore with relative ease. Of course, limitations in the recording were evident, but the 750's created a surprisingly wide and enjoyable sound space.

"Skyway" (Replacements Pleased to Meet Me) was rendered delicately. Westerberg's vocals were pin point accurate, and the depth of sound in the acoutic guitar was refreshing.

"Church" (Lyle Lovett Joshua Judges Ruth 5.1 through the Sony 530 using the digital out to the Denon 4800) was a treat! The handclaps and choir from the surrounds (LCR-55s) were beautifully staged. Lovett's vocals sounded dead on accurate (I checked behind the wall in my kitchen to make sure he hadn't slipped into my apartment unnoticed), and the soundstage was firm and wide.

I could go on and on about various CDs I've listened to and describing how the speakers handled the sound, but I will stop with just one more -- Diana Krall's Love Scenes. The slap base provides a nice test of the lower ranges, and the airy vocals often point out soundstage limitations. The 750's handled this CD without breaking a sweat, and reproduced the music accurately with almost no discernable color at all.

As for HT applications, I have listened to two DTS sources (Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan). After the first half an hour of Saving Private Ryan (after I had climbed up from under the coffee table to duck the bullets that sounded like they were whizzing by my head), I was in love with these speakers. Apollo 13 (I can't recall the chapter, but the scene where something goes wrong during a stint in the simulator, and a guage shatters) was phenomenal, and generated numerous complaints from neighbors -- people in LA are quite attuned to shakes and shudders in buildings, sort of an earthquake radar, I suppose. The musical MX-700 sub has more guts than I thought it would -- it actually surprised me (and yes, there is a break-in period required for the 700 despite what anyone says, it is sounding fuller and richer each time I listen).

As for other non-DTS HT applications, the speakers equally out performed my expectations. From the mono Criterion Collection "M" to the full on 5.1 of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" these speakers never missed a trick.

As you can probably tell, I am absolutely in love with these speakers for the price. I had the pleasure of auditioning the S1-C's in-store, and the only question is whether the S1-C's (at $1099 list each) are worth the incremental difference. I think not. If anyone has auditioned both and found that the significant additional expense is justified, I'd love to hear about it (sooner rather than later preferably, since my thirty day trade-up is almost here).

On another note, I checked out the B&W 602s2's as front L and R (I wanted to make sure that in this price point, I was getting as much speaker as I could), and while the 602s2 is a great speaker in its own right, it significantly provides more color than the M&K 750's. The recording limitations are somewhat less obvious with the B&Ws, and the mids seemed a tad muddy to my ears. Maybe it was just me, and I know that the B&W 602S2's have received good reviews on this page. I should note that my experience was soured when the first pair of B&W's I received had a blown driver for one of the mids -- a frequent knock against B&W I've heard is the frequency with which B&W drivers get blown out. Since this was my first experience with B&W's in my home, I cannot say one way or another, but that experience (rightly or wrongly) made me wary. I think both the M&Ks and the B&Ws have particular strengths, and are both tremendous values. What it comes down to is your own ears. Audition them both, and see which you prefer. To my taste, the M&Ks stand above the B&W's.

I apologize for the lengthy review, but maybe this review will help someone select the right speakers to audition, and, if so, then my typing it was worthwhile. Thanks for reading!

Strength:

Seamless sound between all 8 speakers. I use a Yamaha RXV 2095 which utilizes the front effects so I bought an extra pair of the Surround 550s for that purpose.

Weakness:

None so far, except can't get away to eat and sleep and such.

I purchased this system about a month ago and have been watching/listening to various movie DVDs and audio CDs. I watched The Abyss last night and couldn't believe the seamless integration between all speakers. This is a system of my dreams in light of the fact that I'm not a lottery winner. I hear The Band calling me downstairs to listen now, so for your listening pleasure, buy and enjoy. You can't find a better deal.

Strength:

Awesome sound for the price!!!!!

Weakness:

I haven't noticed anything bad about them

These speakers are great!!! I only use them for home theater so I don't know how they are for music. I have the complete system with a Pioneer VSX26 Elite set to THX mode and all I can say is WOW!!! The DTS version of Saving Private Ryan in incredible and The Matrix has to be heard to be believed. Setting them up was a breeze (my room was already wired for my previous speakers) after some careful placement and setting the levels they sound good wherever you sit, not in just one sweet spot. I highly recommend picking these up if you're in the market for speakers for your Home Theater.

Strength:

Very clear and precise

Weakness:

none

I needed a small footprint 5.1 speaker system that would play both DVD and music. As such I substituted the MK MX700 base unit for about $300 more. The MX700 is supposibly more musical and less boomy. [I have the MX700 set at -3DB so the other MK woofers must really boom]

Getting good music and movie sound in one unit is difficult but this combination fills the bill. Highs are very clear and distinct while the base is very powerful and not muddy.

Setting up surround speakers is not obvious but both the dealer and the MK manual helped immensely.

If you want near-audiophile equipment [great sound without going bananas and paying what a new car would cost], a small footprint, and a system that performs wonderfully on both music and DVD, this combination is hard to beat.

Strength:

brand name, build

Weakness:

distortion in the left channel tweeter

i purchased this product from a local dealer three weeks ago and was really DISAPPOINTED with its performance. believing that it would deliver the same level of quality as my m&k S-85, i went ahead and gave it a try. well, i guess i was wrong.

after playing a couple of pop music, which sounded marvelously over the system, i decided to shift to a beethoven piano sonata for some serious listening. and behold... there is an audible distortion in the left channel tweeter whenever the music becomes dynamic. i said to myself, this can't be, m&k has always been known to have excellent quality control. so, to make sure that it wasn't the cd that's causing all the fuzz, i decided to pop in my xlo reference test disc. using the frequency sweep, it was evident that the distortion at the mid-range level was present. i tried isolating the problem by changing speaker channels, changing cd players, and to the extreme--changing my amplifier. but the problem just keeps on coming.

i returned and tested the unit at the dealer's system and the distortion is still there. so, they replaced it. unfortunately, the replacement had the same problem so i returned it again. i tested the same unit in their other branches only to find out that all the stocks had the same problem.

the 750thx is a great and solid-looking unit. dual-driver, prism technology, thx select certified, what more can you ask. that's why i'm giving it five stars. unfortunately, it did not perform to expectation-- 1 star for quality and performance.

i don't know if you guys went through the experience i just had but i suppose you were all caught up with the LOUD music and movies that you're watching. none-the-less, if you got a worry-free system, then you're lucky.

Strength:

These are amazing speakers, and in my opinion one of the best values to come from a speaker manufacturer, ever. There sound is honest, truely flat and guilt-free. I had my father over so he could have a listen. He brought some of his favorite music cd's and DVD's. Once I finished explaning why to tweeters were pointing away, we decided to start listening. First I showed him what these babies do for two channel recordings, he was amazed by how good these "movie speakers" sounded. He said, that he could hear sounds on his favorite cd's that didn't on his speakers. Coming from my father whose been an audiophile longer that I've been alive, I could'nt help but gloat. As far as movie performance his jaw hit the floor. THANKS M&K!

Weakness:

The only weakness that I can think of, is that these speakers have started a spending frenzy. I purchased a new Onkyo receiver(THX)in order to do the speakers justice. I've bought new wires & cables for just about my entire system, and my DVD colection has quadrupled since I bought the speakers.

If your in the market for speakers in the 2000-2500$ range, look no farther. The M&K750THX-SELECT system is the best that you can get. Even some speakers costing twice as much can't replicated sound the way the M&K's do. Music and Movies take on a life-like Quality that will have you and your guest drooling from the ears. Happy Listening!

Very detailed and dynamic sound, and very wide sound stage.

Weakness:

I listen to them to much, makes me put off stuff that I should be doing

These speakers are awsome. They are replacing my Polk Studio Monitor speakers 2 5jr+ for surround 2 Monitor 12 for the front and CS-350 fro the center channel. The detail they add the sence of space is great. I used my RTA to set the EQ on my Sony ES AC-3 proccessor the didn't have to adjust a thing they have a very flat response. The LCR 750 mains are being ran with a Carver Proffessional PM-600 and Surrounds are ran with a PM-300 and the Center is ran with a PM-300 bridged mono.

One thing that I found very nice was the pre-drilled and threaded holes for moounting brackets in all 5 speakers.

I suggest getting these speakers if you are looking for small great sounding speakers.

Strength:

Clarity, Size, Looks, Strong Highs

Weakness:

4ohms not 8, Cost was a bit high, but now I know why, and low/Mid bass not as stron as some.

I Figure I owe a Review or two as These reviews helped me Immensly in my selections. I originally wanted to spend only about $2500 on my whole system (receiver and speakers) so I was looking at the typical Circuit City/Good Guys/Best buy Linup. Then I started reading these reviews and they convinced me to try out some other stuff. That brought me to the M&K, B&W, DEF Tech's. After listening to all, I decided on the M&K 750 Select, But opted for the MX-125 mk2 as suggested in many of the reviews. I have had the speakers now for a little over 2 weeks and this is what I think, but keep in mind that I have never had anything worth a damn to compare it to.
I will start off by saying that everything that people have said about these speakers in the previous reviews are absolutely true and sound Incredible and amazing. But I do have some other views to offer that might be helpful in making a decision.
The Speakers are definately a system that require them to all work together. When used without the sub for instance, I am very dissappointed as the speakers dont seem to sound that great. Most of the front speakers I listened to sound much better because they have much much more bass. But I figure thats perhaps part of the reason the sound so good in the system as they are not trying to handle too much by extending the bass responce down while still trying to push out those mids and highs. I have noticed though that the low/mids from around 100hz to around 150hz seem to be weak as some music notes in songs that I'm used to hearing seem to be a lower volume than normal. But I am being very critical here and also, I may not have the sub adjusted quite right.
The other Problem that I had was that the speakers are 4ohm which I did not realize when I bought them, not that It would have made a difference in my decission. The problem comes when I try to drive them at EXTREEMLY LOUD volumes with the Denon AVR-3300. The Denon wants to everheat and thermal shutdown. Now you have to understand that the volume levels are extreemly loud, and I cannot sustain listening to this volume level but for a short time. Now I listen to it normally, which is still very loud but tollerable (but not to my wife) and it has not thermal shut down at all even after 4 hours of loud movies and music. I think at the beginning, I wanted to hear what my new toy could do. As far as the speakers go, The speakers t love the loud volume levels and only seem to sound better as I turn it up. This is where other speakers seem to fail. You turn them up and they get scratchy and distorted, but not the M&K's, they just eat it up.
One thing that I was Not sure of before i bought the system was if the speakers would be ok in the size of my room. I consider my den area to be larger than normal as it also incorperates the kitchen. I think I measured it out to be something like 700-800sq ft. I'll tell you that It is not a problem at all and is nothing to wory about.
To sum it up, I Love my speakers as most do and am happy that I spent my hard earned cash on this system.
All my music sounds new and vibrant and I do hear things I have never heard. Two quick things. The sub is worth the upgrade, as the MK125 mk2 hits hard, low loud and tight and movies have never sounded so good.
And the Denon's 5 chanel stereo feature is awesome and makes all music just surround you and fill the room. The best way that I can explain it is take your stereo in your car with front and rears (4 speakers). Now fade the music just to the fronts and listen. Now slowly fade it back so you can hear the rears. Thats how it is only much better quality.
