Strength:

Phenomenal sound!

Weakness:

Power supply problems; see review

I reviewed these speakers on 12/17/2000 (check it out!) and my glowing report on the quality of these speakers still applies. However, about a month ago, the amplifier in the right speaker would not turn on. I took the speaker back to the dealer and he fixed it--no charge. Turns out that a resistor changed value and that kept the power supply from starting.

Guess what--another month and the left speaker's amplifier went out in exactly the same way. The dealer's technician knew right where to look!

The tech told me that he's seen this problem with Infinity's subwoofers but never before in an IL-50. He was amazed that two of them failed.

All's well that ends well (I hope), and I still love the speakers, but I would advise folks to buy their Infinities locally just in case the power supply should blow.

So, sad to say, I'm going to have to reduce my overall rating on these babies.

Strength:

high end and midrange clairty; tight bass; Bass Optimazation System

Weakness:

none thus far

For the price, the sound quality is outstanding. Have focused imaging along with clear mids and highs. Tight but impactful bass. Consdierably better bass then my previous Polks and much smoother sound then other speakers I auditioned, i.e. Bose 701 and Polk RT2000P. I have not even used the RABOS CD yet so sound may even get better.

Strength:

Very high quality speaker at a blowout price

Weakness:

Large and heavy

Ubid is blowing out refurbished speakers right now. I got the pair for $380 plus another $120 for shipping and handling. They are selling as refurbished on Ubid's site but, when I got the speakers there were no signs that they are a refurbished speaker. The speakers were shipped directly from Infinity along with the usual 5 year warranty. Usually refurbished stuff I get is stamped on the box. I wonder if they are just getting rid of excess inventory.

Sounds great out of the box. I replaced a fairly decent speaker with them. There is absolutely no comparison between the IL50s and my old Celestion series 9 speakers which I am now using as my rears. With my old system which also had Celestion rears and center, CDs always sounded better when I played them through all speakers. The IL50s are so superior to my other speakers that music sounds best just using them in stereo mode. Bass is incredible without being to boomy.

Cinema is also incredible. Only problem is now I need a new center as the Celestion one sounds week (the series 9s are still holding up OK for surrounds). I ordered an IL25 for my center speaker but have not received it yet.

At Ubid's current prices, you can get a true audiophile speaker and not break the bank. If I had the room I'd get 4 of these and use them for the surrounds too. My significant other would kill me though as I took a little flack with these being so large. Had to point out that the footprint was not much bigger than my old front speakers. They are quite attractive. I have the cherry which is pretty light and looks more like oak. I also have an IL100 sub in maple. The maple is almost white and really looks like pine or a bleached wood. I liked the cherry better and it matches my oak furniture. My sub is hidden so it doesn't matter if it matches. The IL50s may be used without a sub since one is built in but, when it comes to movies it doesn't hurt to have a stand alone too.

Strength:

Great Bass, Makes watching a DVD more interesting

Weakness:

Highs are a little weak, but all and all still a great value

I purchased this speaker after doing a good bit of research, and I found for the value, you could not beat the IL 50's. I am sure the 60's are great, but 250W per sub is more than plenty for me. I have yet to turn the sub up over 3/4 of the way. It actually shakes my DVD player and makes it skip if I do. Also when ever you buy an infinity product, you know you are getting a quality speaker. I would not suggest buying these speakers from a normal store. Please save yourself some money and buy online. At circuit city i believe these sell for $899 each. I bought mine for about $500 for the pair. That saved me about $1300.

All in all I could not be more happy with these speakers. They are relatively cheap, and sound GREAT.

Ability to control bass, natural mids, highs

I am a long time audiophile, and these have amazed me. Have owned Maggies, KEF, B&W 801s, Klipschorns, Apogees , ARs, JBL, and countless others and still own a pair of Thiels. Speakers continue to lure me, and also have been a source of some frustration over the years. None is perfect, or for all purposes/rooms/music. Anyway, I have recently moved to a mobile home park, and my den is only 10X12 now. The Thiels are an outstanding design, but do not sound nearly as good here as they did in my prev. larger room. They need more distance from walls and the listener. These IL50s have the ability to suit the small room in the bass. I am listening to them near-field at about 5 feet, towed in with grills off. They image very well. I believe the fact they are basically a 2-way is in their favor, and they have that narrow front which helps them to image. Many of my favorites over the years have been based on a 6" mid/woofer with a dome tweeter. They are, in my opinion, a true high end design. Now I have not had them long, and problems sometimes take a while to surface in my experience, but without a doubt these are a very fine speaker

Strength:

Good sound. Looks good. Saves space

Weakness:

Very heavy. Expensive retail price

I just got a pair of IL50's and wanted to know how other people have been connecting the subwoofer output from the receiver to the speakers. The manual states a couple of ways of doing it including using a Y-splitter. I was thinking of connecting the subwoofer output to the subwoofer input of the first speaker and then connect the subwoofer output of the first speaker into the subwoofer input of the second speaker. Anybody know if this is a good idea. Comments a welcomed.

Thanks

To be honest, I don't know much about speakers. But I do know what sound good and what doesn't. These speakers are overrated. For the price I paid, it's a good buy. But I wouldn't pay much more than that.

Weakness:

I can't find any real faults in these speakers

These are my first REAL pair of speakers, so it might not be fair to give them such a high rating. All the speakers I've used before were about 200$ a pair. But I've spent alot of time in places like ultimate electronics and such listening to this and for the price I couldn't find anything close. The amount of bass these things can produce is riduculous. I've compared these to stuff like boston acoustics and polk. They both sounded kind of sterile compared to the infinities.

Strength:

Value...... bass is phenomenal.

Weakness:

set your center channel to small or large

I,ve had these speakers for about only one month. I have tried every which way to blow them... they wont...If any readers ever want to consider a Polk audio product to an infinity.. DONT...
This was a credit given to me by Circuit City as an open box ,after I blew the Polk RT 2000 5 times in 15 months. This is a world of difference speaker at a fraction of the cost. This is a must have even for enthusiasts considering even the Def Tech line of speakers. The only draw back to this speaker is imaging, but if you got a great surround system I dont think it will matter much.
I have played this speaker mostly with music and I cant begin to tell you the difference between the POLK speaker and this one. I'm trying really hard to blow these speakers and they wont. This speaker is worth every penny from Infinity, and they give you a factory five year warranty if you should ever blow a speaker.
The Bass on this speaker is awesome.....just awesome.. But it will pick up bad recordings on bad CD's. You also cant rely on this speaker to do all the work without a center channel. i tried putting all the work for the center into the Infinity,, and the sound took a beating converting all the signal from the center channel. when
This speaker only got better when pushed,,, and dont be afraid to push it...it gets only better and more sweet sounding.. You must tilt them in towards the wall for the subs. but this is true for any one experimenting
All in all this speaker is highly recommended, just must be matched with better quality surrounds and a definetly great center channel and call in for work sick for a week and listen to your favorite cd's

Everything! Great bass and clarity. well built and sturdy with bass full blast.

Weakness:

looks> i got these speakers with the maple finish and it is OK, but the black grill makes it ugly. guess thats all

The reviews on this website made me buy these speakers. There were so many positive reviews for them. I went to Circuit City to test the speakers I was going to buy, and I was extremely impressed. The 250 watt sub and the Infiniti name make this speaker more bang for the buck. Very highly recommended!!
