Me - for being a complete idiot

The scam has been well documented below. And yes I am a mug like everyone else and got caught by the white van mob. And I paid £500 for these. There was an alarm bell ringing in my head (why didn't I tell them where to go then), so when they brought the wretched speakers into my flat I videod the transaction on my web cam and the con artist still prattling on about the how much I saved, and that they were were excess stock with a RRP of £1,800 (ha!) and all the other bullsh*t which those of you who end up on this page will have heard.

On plugging the speakers into my hifi, one gave off a terrible burning smell. As for the other speaker, well I'd be surprised if it would survive more than 30 watts.

The London warehouse, from the postings below is in Waterside Way, near Wimbledon. I will going there tomorrow. If I don't get the money back then, the camvid will going to friends in television to be shown on National TV and a posting on the web, with a copy to Trading Standards

Muddy bass, no mid-range, a big rip-off

While I am sitting at home on my lunch break, my roommate calls from a gas station and says there are two guys in a Dynalab van trying to sell him some speakers. The guys claimed the speakers were overstocks. “They’re $1200 speakers…and the Dynalab guys are going to sell them to me for $300 a pair! What do you think?” I advised against the purchase, smelling a scam, but my roommate went ahead with it anyway.

Later, back at work, I found this message board…and my suspicions were confirmed. I let my roommate know what I had found.

He immediately decided to try to get rid of the speakers, so we followed the instructions on the receipt. They subsequently called and said they’d pick the speakers up and give my roommate a full refund. Wish him luck…

So, my advice: stay away from white vans selling speakers. I’m not a true audiophile yet (frankly I can’t afford it right now), but I know what sounds good and what doesn’t. We hooked the speakers up to my 75-w Sherwood ProLogic receiver and played some CDs and DVDs. The speakers sounded average to me, with muddy, unfocused bass, very little mid-range, and piercing, tinny highs. Granted, they sounded better than my little Sherwood satellite fronts ($200 for the whole ProLogic receiver/satellite/sub combo a few years ago). But if I were in the market to replace any of my speakers, I would shop around and do my business at stores that don’t have a fuel tank, brakes, and power steering. :)

My biggest gripe is that the speakers were misrepresented as being worth $1200 each to make you think you were getting a great deal at $300.

Stay away from Dynalab and anybody else selling hi-fi equipment from the backs of vans.

I would just like to say thank you to the people who have contributed to this site.
I was taken in by the white van men two evenings ago and parted with 200 pounds, even though I didn't really need any speakers.
Yesterday, I had my eyes opened by the views on this web page and realised how stupid I'd been. I called the office right away to ask for my money back, went round to their office/warehouse at 8pm (when they return from a hard day's hustling) and received a full cash refund, no complaints, no intimidation.
I don't know about the people behind the operation, but those working in the vans are not crooks, they are just hungry salespeople who profit from our gullibilty/greed.
I can afford to be philosophical because I've learnt my lesson, but lost no money. To the rest of you, Good Luck and if you act quickly, you should get your money back

I'm a Japanese, am living in Osaka Japan.
I bought Acoustic studio minitor 3311 from two white man in white van two months ago.
They were poor Japanese speaker.
They said warehouse mistake,
So they must sell it and they have no time.
I paid 50000 Yen(430 us dollors) for 2 monitors.
One guy said other Japanese man paid 1000$ for 2.
I seached by internet and at last find this page.

The reason I give these speakers 5 stars is because of the fun I had in rejecting them. Like others I was approached by 2 salesmaen selling this junk in a car park. I had already been informed of this scam by a friend so I quickly caught on to what they were up to.
I knew they were selling junk speakers and trying to rip me off but they did not know I was a black belt in Karate. They soon found out. I left them rolling around in their own broken teeth. My only regret is that I didnt batter them more.

It's sad too see just how many people here are whining about the deal. Sure it's ok help a driver rip off the company, but when it turns out that you were misguided you threaten violence. I paid $240 for mine and I love them! I have bought more pairs since my original purchase last summer and end up selling them to my friends, who want more. I have yet to find speakers of this quality for under $600. Try finding Cerwin Vega, Sony, or JBL speakers of the same quality for the same price. For $400 you'll get spring loaded jacks, cones made of styrofoam and card board, and they maybe even be liquid cooled. While I don't think the speakers are worth $1200 I do think they are a great deal for up to $500.

Strength:

Cheap Price

Weakness:

Poor Service, no local retailers, poor pressure tactics, and used car salesman techniques.

Same old story! I was confronted by two men in a white van when they sold the same old pitch. This has been about the 4th time that I have been approached to buy a set of "overstock" speakers. They show you the bogus ad, the bogus price and a "supposed" receipt. It seems like there tactics are getting bolder. The one gentlemen unlocked my door and put the box in my car, even after telling him not too! Then the guy starts complaining and saying " I already put them in your car, c'mon we'll follow you to the ATM" after about 5 minutes of arguing the one guy started talking trash, and lets just say that he went home with a beating. After crying and putting the speakers back in the van. They both gave me the middle finger and the last laugh was on him. Plse be aware and do not buy these speakers a friend of mine had been suckered into the scam and they are very tinny sounding. YOu are better off buying a set of bookshelf speakers and paying just a little over the $300 discount price.

Heard a set in a stereo store awhile back. Sounded as good as others in price range

Weakness:

Somewhat expensive

I can't tell if all these van stories are real or not but the "van scam" is as old as audio itself. How many of you own Rolex watches bought the same way. If you bought these from a van then you're a sucker, plain and simple. About 15 years ago I ran across a van selling car audio with the same sales pitch/line. I passed but I met a guy who had purchased a pair of subs...CV's I think...and they wouldn't work unless you pushed downd on the cone, in other words, bad voice coil, possibly factory defect. I've seen printers and Facsimile machine sold in a similar fashion. Ask for a permit to sell and watch the sales guy turn green. The real version of these speakers were just fine. Let me assure you that what you were hearing was not a true representation of the speaker thats listed on this sites description page. These people probably got the speaker cabinets or maybe even the drivers from some factory over-stock or maybe even some mishap. Not even the most stupid sales manager would authorized his own companies product to be sold by "some dudes in a van". Chalk up yet another victory for good old brick and mortar stores!

Clear sound, good highs

Weakness:

lack of midrange, so don't as the only speakers but for surround sound

I too was approached by a couple of guys in a van. I told them that I had seen this site and I knew the deal. I asked them what was really going on. They said that it was their job and that is was also perfectly legal. When I told them what some of the reviewers here said about the quality of the speakers the salesman, Jeff, offered to bring them to my house and hook them up before I handed him any money. They sounded pretty good. Great for only $320! After hearing them I would have been happy to pay upwards of $500 for them. I don't know how you people are hooking up these speakers but I am very satisfied with these speakers. I simply replaced the front speakers on my surround sound system and they blow away my old fishers. Unfortunately they only had one set left. Otherwise I would have replaced the JBL's (with very similar specs) in my family room.

Well I went home and got some 16 gauge wire with some bananna clips and hooked these things up. Fortunatly they arent bad. I am in no way an expert in home audio. These are my first pair of speakers. Which is probably why they sound okay to me.I have never heard 1200$ speakers but im sure they sound better than these. Any way for 240 bucks I dont feel to ripped off. I will continue to use them especially since I didnt get a receipt.
