I must be a 'Prol. I agree very heartily with Mr. Stone--Listening is subjective. Why is it that when we (or You) like something that others don't like all that testosterone gets your nads swollen up and you just have to trash other people to make yourself feel good? But then again, I am just a casual music listener. The idea of jamming my head in a vice to enjoy tha orgasmic swwet spot of sound...I just don't get it. But then again, let us remember, I am a 'Prol. I enjoy the sound of my Def. Techs. I am sorry if this seems to offend some of the great and wonderful audiophiles out there in "2 Speaker Land". I guess DTS music must be right out. 5 Speakers for musics, oh yea gods and little fishes!!! I like Energy Bi-poles too. For my money these were what sounded good to me, the 'Prol. Enjoy. (And for the guy who suggested getting the Polk SRT system in the place of this one: Yeah, I am sure we all have the $8,000 to $16,000 it would take to setup and all full-size speaker home theatre.

I just went to a dealer and listen to a demo. These speakkers were okay forhome theater sound. However, they did not impress me when it comes to music. The powered subwoof help give the base a boost. Yet, they lack the clarity that
I normally expected from speakers at this catagory.

Perhaps they hype surrounding these speakers created a high expectation from me.
So that when I actually see them in person, I was diasppointed.

Personally, I would rate the Canton speakers above tthese.

Strength:

Incredible balance- crisp, clear sound. Can play loud with my Marantz SR-96 receiver or SAE A502 power amp. These speakers are articulate yet robust. The powered subs take strain off the power amp/receiver. Independent subwoofer controls for each speaker allows for adjusting bass levels for room acoustics.

Weakness:

I have yet to find a weakness after almost 3 years of use. If I had to name a weakness, I'd have to say the lack of discounting on Definitive speakers in general.

This is a follow-up to my review in 2/97. I'm still madly in love with these speakers.
Though I felt the cost of the 2002's was high at the time, over the years I have found value
in their melodious sound. I have owned many brands of loudspeakers and have built a
share of them as well. These are the best speakers, bar none, that I have ever owned.
Many reviewers have correctly noted that placement of these (or any speakers) is critical
to their sounding their best. One must also remember that while one type of speaker may
sound fine in one room, they may not sound good in another. I must say the DT's have
sounded great in the medium to large size rooms I have played them in. I have the feeling
that a small room wouldn't expound on their sound potential- much like taking a Ferrari
out on an old dirt road.Others have once again correctly noted that speaker preference is
subjective. (My wife swears by her Bose 301's, yet I find them rather cheesy.)I recommend
that you find a dealer who will let you take these speakers home for a trial. Compare them
to other candidates with various types of music and movies and make your own decision.
For me, these have been the BEST speaker buying decision I have ever made. They are
my babies!

Similar Products Used:

I have owned Bose (No highs, no lows? Must be Bose! I HAD to get a subwoofer to
fill-in the missing bottom end of my 901's. Needless to say, I’m not a Bose fan. I think
there are far better values out there- not to mention less expensive speakers with superior
construction.), Energy, JBL's, Altec Lansing, Boston Acoustic, Acoustic Research,
Advent, DBX, Infinity and assorted homemade speakers- mostly with Dynaudio or Morel
mids and tweeters w/ JBL, EV and Becker woofers. The BP2002's are still my all-time
faves. (2nd faves are a pr. of home-builts w/ Morel MD75 dome mids and MDT28 tweets
and 15" Becker woofers.)

I'm am very impressed with the BP2002's. But now I'm looking for the best price. How much did you pay for your BP2002's, and where did you get them?

Seeing the negative comments on the DT BP-2002 from a handfull of people here has me ready to chip in my $.02
I used to own a pair of BP-20s and liked them overall..but as time went on I was ready to upgrade to better (and costlier) things. Due to the size of the BP-20 - then placed in a second system (imagine a second system with big DTs - staggers the mind!), well I ended up selling them.

When I heard the BP-2002 I was, to be very honest - impressed. They sounded better than the older DTs, and more important - the quirks of the old DTs were gone! The bass was tight - not loose, yet still very extended. The midrage was cleaner and with much better detail and resolution - and the treble was airy without being strident. Clearly some things do get better as times goes on - and clearly DT speakers is one of them.

A headache from listening? Horsefeathers! Ringing in the ears? Naaaa. For that matter I take issue with the sub positioning point - yes the positioning of a sub is critical but now there are 2 sub drivers to deal with... which places another factor in when roon nodes are taken into consideration. BTW the results of the BP-2002 in the bass are much different when the sub drivers are faces inward than outware.. and neither one is the "right way". The right way is the way that sounds best in the room.

As for the payoff comment re: Brent Butterworth - geeeeeez let's get real! I have reviewed (and am reviewing) a number of speakers for another web site and it's not done that way if there is a shred of honesty on either end.

Lastly I'll leave by dropping a bomb and food for thought. I own PSB Stratus Silvers and NHT 2.5i's personally. I am listening to a pair of BP-2004s (shorter height, 10" sub version of the 2002) right now and will have a review out this week on them. Very interesting, VERY intersting! Let's say that as the NHTs are on the second system and the PSBs are stored away, I am not suffering to say the least. Just to stay neutral right now - I'll post a middle of the road 3 stars - but that is on a absolute basis, not sound for the money.

Nathaniel is right. These speakers are pretty good. I tried them at home (as Ido with all the speakers) and they had a much better sound than in the dealer
showroom. They have a good bass and good imaging (at least for classical music).
Keep listening!
Adrian

PS Mattias, these speakers are BIPOLAR not DIPOLAR!

Placement of a sub woofer is one of the most critical parts of setting up your system properly. One thing is for sure, though. Gotta be at least CLOSE to a corner. The 2002's have subs IN THE SPEAKER firing out the side! Bottom line is that if you get the speakers located properly for the mid bass, mid's and highs, the sub's are out of place. They simply cannot do what a sub is supposed to do when located IN the speaker, 18" + from the wall and several feet away from the corners. If you like the 2002's, forget about them and instead go buy the BP8 or BP10, and add a good (not the PF12, please) sub that you can properly set up. The 2002's redefine muddy bass in a typical setup. Take out the subs and these can be great. With the subs, they are one step up from awful.

Simply put these speakers are not worth it. In Bosnia, our speakers are much louder. Sound reproduction is erotic at best, but speaking of imagery, David Copperfield is much better to observe with the hot Claudia Schiffer nude.

Strength:

Deep Bass, Sleek black lacquer, Bipolar

Weakness:

Weight, these puppies are heavy!

I too purchased these as a demo. Purchased them at $1500 for the pair. I've been using them for close to 5 months now, and I love them! The bass is deep and the bipolar style creates a very open stage that surrounds you from any listening area. Not only do I enjoy listening to them, I just love to look at them. They are beautiful! I think my wife gets jealous sometimes.

The Definitive Tech BP-2002 speakers are (from my listening) anexcellent value for the money. There are a number of things I like
about these speakers: The sound is clean, they look nice, and they take
an absolute minimum amount of space. On the downside, their midrange is
just a little weak when compared to something like the NHT 2.5i.
Although I found a few speakers that had slightly better sound in my price
range, I ended up with the BP-2002s for a number of reasons. One was price.
If you compare these to any speakers of equivanent or better sound, plus a
subwoofer, these are a great value. Another reason was space: In my apartment,
there just wasn't a good place to put a separate subwoofer. Having a subwoofer in each tower works out well. The person who said you can't get decent subwoofer performance unless your subwoofer is in the corner is wrong: While
you get the most out of a subwoofer that way, having two separate subwoofers as the BP-2002s have does really well even though they aren't in a corner.
Also, an earlier review said these speakers are unshealded, so can't be close
to the TV, but from what I've read from the manufacturer and from actual experience they appear to be adequately shielded. I have no problems placing them near the TV. Plus, for home theater the Definitive center channel is great, and I like the bipolar surrounds (yes, even with Dolby digital AC3...
I find the bipolar surrounds give a more theater-like sound).

These speakers are a worth contender for anyone, and are especially good at
home theater. They are bipolar, so you need to play a bit with the placement
to get the best sound (bipolar speakers like the Definitives have divers front
and back, with the front ones putting out a much louder sound, and the back ones directed to reflect off the wall).

Some people love the bipolar sound, other don't, so you really need to try
these speakers out for yourself.
