Props to the Enema Bandit for the humorous take on the AcoustiMess review.

What kind of moron would think of trying to repair the obnoxiously-priced Acoustimess system by changing out the subwoofer and insulting another speaker company by integrating it with Bose gear--and in the end, spending 4 times as much as you had to to begin with. What's next? Keep the cubed-satellites, but change out the speaker drivers with Def Tech tweeter/mids, and swap out the speaker wire with Kimber Kable? People like that shouldn't be able to vote, drive cars, use power tools, or be around children.

Strength:

Small size and great sound. You won't have trouble finding a place to put these babies anywhere. I also like the fact that they come with about 100 ft. of speaker wire for each speaker already hooked into the sub. Satellites are ready to fit right into most stands and/or wall brackets.

Weakness:

no stands or wall brackets included. You must purchase these almost must have items seperately and they are not cheap. It can run almost another $200 just for stands and/or wall brackets.

These things are fantastic! I would not suggest these however to someone who is looking for speakers mainly to listen to music. Get a set of floor or tower speakers for that. While they perform rather well in that regard, especially for the size, these are for surround sound. I hooked these up to a Pioneer VCX-d509s receiver and my basement is like a mini movie theater. Used with this receiver they simulate all sorts of different kinds of surround sound from concert halls (which is neat because it makes your cd's and tapes sound like your at the concert, live cd's are incredible and leave you wondering why you're the only one at the concert), to movie theaters (they are sooooo clear and crisp sounding!), to just plain old being surrounded by 6 speakers and rockin' out! The sub is awesome. I have it set in front of me instead of behind me and quite frankly I literally FEEL the bass from the other side of the room like a wave of rumbling air that sounds pretty cool! I also like the way the satellite's are two littelt speakers that you can turn to spread the sound out more. My wife took the credit card away and was ready to divorce me when I told her I ordered these. She now however sings to a different tune since listening to them. She watches a lot more movies and even stranger than that, she watches them downstairs now because she like the way they sound so much (my wife never comes downstairs to the family room for whatever reason). To sum this up ..... these speakers rock and for the price range of $1000 I think a great deal, especially for the amount of watts each speaker can handle (100-200). My browsing experience found it hard to find speakers that strong and the ones found were easily $500 - $1000 more.

Sound and value.Over-marketed and hyped to death.

Kevin,
People don't need to own this gear to make a fair evaluation. Get out there and perform an AB comparison for yourself. I DID and so did many who posted before me. That's why we didn't buy Bose. You'll soon see what many of us have been harping about for some time. Bose wouldn't be SO bad if they lowered their outrageous prices by 40-50% and marketed them accordingly. Instead, they continue to market their stuff as hi-fi(particularily their AM systems) which is a major injustice to all the great speaker manufacturers who truly make top-notch gear. Today, the list of great, affordable speaker manufacturers is virtually endless so why limit yourself to the inferior and overpriced Bose systems.
I had a couple of lady's come up to me at work several days ago and ask me which speakers to choose when it was time to jump on the HT bandwagon. The first name that pierced their lips was "Bose". I immediately informed them that Bose was not the way to go. They mentioned the Bose brand because the company bombards the masses with ad after ad in magazines and such. That's their strategy amd it's been effective for a very long period of time. However, speaker design and materials have made quantum leaps in the last 5-10 years and Bose hasn't kept up with the competition. The list of great-sounding,highly-affordable HT speaker systems costing $1,200 or less has grown by leaps and bounds. Educate yourself and I think you'll agree...Bose Sucks!!!
Now get out there and audition some speakers! Have fun and happy listening.

Kevin

Strength:

None! OK...their size if you're really in a bind for space. A really tight bind because you'd be better off with a good set of in-wall speakers...which would probably cost 1/3 of these overpriced Bose. In fact, the entire Bose line is drastically overpriced. They've got the general public duped.

Weakness:

Plenty- No deep bass, inaccurate mids,etc.,etc.

Thankfully, I don't own these or any of the overpriced and under-performing Bose line. Please don't fall for the hype. Their prices are so out-of-whack with the quality that you receive. I have heard the entire Bose line in stores and several friends own their basic sub/sat systems(not the HT packages). My dbx sub/sat system blows the doors off their systems and it was 1/3 to 1/2 the price.I have a cousin who's been in a band for twenty years and he was utterly amazed at the sound coming from my dbx system(his mouth was wide open..LOL) Bose offers a 2" paper cone for mids(how's that for high-quality!)...my dbx system uses a 4" carbon-filled mid with a rubber surround. The dbx satellites also feature a port which allows the satellites to blend seamlessly and fill-in the audio gap with the sub(or should I say "bass cube" since we all know two 6.5" drivers in a sealed box can't be considered a true subwoofer). It's a shame that dbx decided to abandon the consumer speaker market(they're solely involved in the Pro- Sound industry) because their products were hard to beat. The dbx system trounced the competition(Bose,Polk,Cambridge Soundworks, and Yamaha..actually the Yamaha system fared well) in a double-blind test in the early 90's. It received roughly 75% of the first place votes from the 150 listeners. In short, don't fall for all the Bose hype in their brochures and magazine ads. Think about it...how's a 2" paper cone gonna give you accurate mids? They have a high crossover point on their sub to fill-in(unsuccessfully) the audio gap between the cutesie cubes and the sub. That, in turn, makes it impossible to hide the sub's location when the bass starts to hit. It's all about physics. Use your head! Good Luck.

dbx Soundfield 3 x 2 Sub/Sat system from the now-defunct DAK Co.(remember them?...some of their audio products were so-so but the dbx speaker line that they offered were a great bargain on high-quality speakers. I also own 3 pairs of Aura LSW-828M's(from uBid) and the Aura LSC-537M Center Channel speaker(from Soundscape in Santa Rosa ,CA).

Weakness:

the way they sound....period

For anybody reading this review that hasn't spent your money yet, DO NOT BLOW YOUR DOUGH. Take it from me, I got suckered like everybody else (even if they don't think they did)and shelled out the $900 for these speakers.

It took me about a year of listening to them until I finally admitted to myself that they suck! If its brilliant high end you want, these don't have it (except for that shrill mid trying to be a high sound only found in the best fully cranked clock radio speakers). And the bass unit is as passive as they get (istead of thud thud, its dud dud) The reviewers listed below that say these speakers sound good are in denial because they spent their hard earned money also. Two and half inch speakers with a paper cone and they are supposed to be able to reproduce sound as it was intended to be heard? Please!!

As soon as I can justify it to my wife, Mirage here I come. For those of you still in speaker Purgatory, listen to and buy Mirage, Boston, Klipsh or other speakers around $1,000 and I promise you'll end up much happier than the rest of us that realize the joke was on us.

Everything else

Ill add my two cents here. Positively speaking, BOSE are great for those people who would like to have a small set of speakers "hiddden" away in the corners of their room.
That is as far as Bose goes in my book. As mentioned before, if these speaker packages (all Acoustimass models) were to cost about $300-$500 less they would be a pretty good deal(thats why i give them a 2). But $500-$1200!!! Are yall stupid?????????
When i worked at a local retail store, i would stear everyone away from bose. Its amazing how people are willing to shell out so much money for these things.

Bose must have the greatest marketing team in world! Even for compact size, JBL's satallete package with POWERED sub blows Bose away.

And so i state again, the quality of these speakers versus the Price it TERRIBLE!! Almost anything is better. Go get yourself some Paradigm, Energy, JBL, Yamaha, or B&W.

If you HAVE to get Bose for the name thats one thing, but if you want to spend that much on quality..dont look at the Bose line.

I really think alot of people are right about the sound of the bose. The base is weak and the speakers are bright sounding. I didnt look around like i shoud have but im making the best of them. I bought the M&K V-75 mark II subwoofer and a yamaha 1103 reciever and they sound great. the sub makes up for the poor bass, and evens out the brightness of the speakers. I think the bose reciever that comes with the speakers is junk.

This is for the person below.Have you even done any side by side comparisons with the Bose. The Energy Take 5 blows Bose away in every area.Ever notice that the GOOD audio stores don`t carry them. The reason is because there are ALOT of other speakers in that price range that cover all the bases.Bose gives you a passive bass modual that requires your receiver to power. Those tiny voice coils sound like shit when pushed.I used to be on the Bose band wagon years ago when I did`nt have a clue what was out there.I`ve had the 901`s and the 201`s and I would not recommend those to anybody.
