Own 201 & AM5. Heard demo of AM10 recently. Like all other AM series products, the sound varies dramatically depending on positioning of not only the Bass module (or Sub as some prefer) but the cubes as well. I have found that positioning near the cieling rather than the floor gives the best sound largely because the "reflecting" sound creates a wider dimension to the room and also the sound is not obstructed by furniture / people in the room. Floor speakers can be badly muffled in a room full of people depending on where you are standing. Yes, the bass is not too deep but having changed my amp recently, I also figured that the Bose speakers' performance is highly dependent on the amp. and the same system can sound very crappy with the wrong amp. Also, the high flexibility in positioning the AM series speakers is a very serious "Product Benefit" from an aesthetic and functional point of view.
Anyway, what all the "Bose bashers" forget is that most people in this world are not audiophiles and the comfort that comes from buying a well known and well reviewed product is high when you are not an expert in the field. So for every Bose Basher here, there are probably a thousand "Bose Happy" people who may not think it worthwhile to participate in this review.

No Highs, No Lows.... MUST BE BOSE! (oh.. and the midrange is nothing to write home about either. One reviewer put it perfectly.
"they could use a sub woofer and the highs arent all that well defined the overall sound quality is fine"

Then he adds.....

"Product support is the BEST!! Im on my 3rd pair, I blowem and they give me a brand new pair every time. "

Talk about quality!

These speakers are not worth the money, but for those who need small, non-descript speakers with average (better than Pioneer or Technics) sound quality, these might be an option. I use them for my second surround system and they're OK, as long as I have a real system to watch/listen to for hard core movie viewing. I still recommend listening to the "better" makes to ensure these are the ones you want, such as Energy, Boston Acoustics, or Kef. I did notice one thing about the AM module -- to get the best possible bass (since most people complain about this), the AM module (subwoofer) should be placed in a corner, with the port aiming directly at the corner, so that the module bisects the 90 degree angle made by the walls. The module should be placed a couple of inches from each of the walls. This is the way they teach Bose "certfied" installers to set up the sub, and this enhances the bass output of the system quite a bit! Not quite like a real sub, but I noticed a great enhancement in low frequency response.

I would recommend listening to the Boston Acoustics Micro Reference System9000 before spending any money on Bose. Have you ever looked at the drivers in the cubes? They are apparently just identical cone speakers. Where are the tweeters? How can you get highs from such a large cone? How can you get mids from such a small cone? I am not impressed with the sound or build quality of the Bose.
I used to work at Circuit City, and many of the cubes came back broken because they are made of cheap materials that are poorly assembled. Let me tell you, my Boston Micro90's are made from die-cast aluminum, and it would take a blowtorch to break these speakers. They also have a 75W powered 8" subwoofer and such transparent beautiful highs that will cause chills will shoot down your spine.

I wonder why so many people defend a speaker that is so obviously inferior. Who knows! People drive Chevys and listen to the Spice Girls, but those two products are inferior and cheap. Bose is inferior and expensive. Go figure.

It will never substitute full range speakers, but for a small room, yousimply can't beat them. They will give you everything you need for a very
long time.

I had been in the market for a quality pair of speakers for over a month. I decided that my price point for a good pair would be $ 800 - $ 1,200. I have listened to countless speakers and have been in numerous Circuit Cities and Good Guys in the Bay Area, as well as Sears and numerous mom and pop electronics stores..
Overall, most speakers in that price range performed very well; from the Polk, Infinity RS8, Klipsh, Boston Acoustics and Energy.

Many years ago, my brother had a pair of Bose 201 and I really enjoyed them. I thought they were a great deal for the money. I decided to take a close look at the Bose AM10.

I was shocked...For the price of $ 949; they were terrible. I literally could not believe my ears. As a home theater system, they were passable; although many systems for far less were superior in sound. For music, I would take my existing Aiwa mini-component system over them. The mid-range was muddled, the bass was light, and where are the crisp highs? What was most surprising was the lack of music definition...Definition and clarity were seriously lacking.

When I made mention of my observations to the salesperson, he was not surprised..in fact, he said that the majority of individuals who purchase the AM10 take little time to audition any of the other systems. They simply believe that they get what they pay for. Not to my surprise, he also said they were the number 1 speaker system in terms of returns and/or exchanges. He guesses that when people take them home, they finally realize that they're not much better off than their existing home system.

What system did I choose? The Infinity Overture 1. Incredible sound from it's incredibly small size and the price is extremely reasonable...the quality of it's components are excellent.

I sure hope BOSE is not starting to believe their own hype..in my opinion, they need to re-focus their efforts to R&D.........

I must make a very big deal about the loudspakers in my (future) home cinema system. My small room will used for living (as a private room), for job and for home cinema. This situation doesn't let me to buy a real full range, full size loudspaker system. I found Bose as a good compromise: small size, a rather good sound (I like it), and relatively good price.I tested most Acoustimass system (3, 5, 7 and 10 Series I) with several kinds of music, and I found it as a good deal for a "conventional" (mean: not audiophile) listener with an interest for the most kind of music (except the deepbass-full techno and related music). Of course, most of the users will need a good subwoofer for music too.
But. I ask most of the readers, who knows a good 5+1 compatible loudspeaker set similar to Bose with the size (max. 2 times bigger), the price (around 1000 USD)? Thanks in advance, if you write me a few lines!

You'll notice that most people who review the bose highly are bose owners who must do that in order to not feel ripped off. Bose is one of the most succesful marketing companies to ever introduce an AV product. However, as every other speaker manufacturer continued to develope better products, bose continued to develope their name recognition.

The small size may be nice, but they neglect to include a tweeter so the high frequency is non existant. you'll notice in the lit that the bottem end is handled by a "Bass Module" NOT a sub-woofer as many bose retailers claim. This bass module is responsible for freqencys all way up to 250hz,which are highly localized notes.
If you are unlucky enough to own a pair, grab a phillips screwdriver and pull one of those drivers out, then grab your kids walkie takie and take that apart. You'll notice some shocking similarities in the speakers.......

If you want a high quality small system, look at the Energy, Mirage and Monitor AUdio offerings.
