Well I got scammed too by these guys - white van, oakley sunglasses, goatee beards. Said they were real genuine speaker should be $1000 worth etc. I paid $400. S.O.B. Anyway, there is a good part of this story. I'm in the U.S. Marine Corps and me and my buddies went on the look out to see what was hangin around. I guess they stayed in town too long because we caught up with them and gave those greedy S.O.Bs a kick for every single one of you guys. Cops had been after them but had found it difficult to pull them in or punish them properly - they'd be back out too quick etc So the local cop who walked past turned a blind eye while me and my boys beat the cr*p out those three b*stards. We wrecked the van, smashed the speakers and took £35,000 cash which we gave to charity (I took my money back though). Let me lay your minds to rest - they did get hurt, I personally broke one of their arms in the text book military fashion myself.

THESE PEOPLE DO GET THEIR'S. IT DOES HAPPEN. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF WHEN. IF I SEE THE SAME SCAM ON MY TRAVELS I WILL DO THE SAME AGAIN.

IF YOU THINK THIS SCAM IS CLEVER OR THAT YOU ARE GETTING AWAY WITH THIS THINK AGAIN - WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

They say that you can't cheat an honest man, and this is a good example. Surplus or no, I know that I was, in effect, atempting to purchase stolen merchandise. I won't defend these sleazy characters, but I can't defend my actions, either. I was wrong. On the bright side, it was a rather cheap lesson learned.

My son was approached by two men in their 20's at a convenience store who offered to sell him the 9901 for $1000. He offered them $90 and they were willing to sell. He then told them that he wasn't knowledgeable about speakers and didn't want to be "taken." So he broke off the deal and sent them on their way. No harm done to him or his finances, but the scam is alive in Houston, TX!!

I got ripped off too...but I put some crossovers in and they sound decent enough now. I wrote everything down on how to put them in for anybody that might not know how. Hey some guys just suck really bad and they got a whole racket goin here. Good luck with makin them sound better. By the way you need to learn how to use a solderin iron or gun...even a mini torch works very very well. But don't use a huge torch you'll burn everything up. U can get a solderin iron at any electrcal store and most have mini torchs too.

I know how to make them sound decent. I just did it with mine in the past couple of days...I got ripped off too. Go to Radio Shack and buy 3 way crossovers and 40' of 12 or 14 gauge wire..the bigger wire will let the juice flow more freely makin them sound better...and 12-14 is what is recommended for an ok hi-fi system. Getting 34 quick release tips for 12 gauge wire with .25 or 1/4 gap to go on the end of the wires to hook up to the speakers makes putting everything together easier. You'll also need to find 8 small screws to fit into the holes on the crossover set up. The manual says wood...but metal screws work just as well. You'll also need a soldering iron and some solder. If u don't know how to solder...learn how...it helps. After you buy all this...and it don't cost that much...about 16 per crossover and 16 bucks for wire...the tips for the wires are usually cheap at any electrical store...anyways....take the speakers apart by taking off the grills and then removing each component of the speaker including the terminal in the back. Now write down where each color wire goes and if there is a capacitor attached to it...you're gonna have to put that capacitor back on. Now you have to measure out the lengths of each wire...give yourself a little space so you can connect the speakers outside of the box. If you bought tips for the wires...I hope u did...put them on the ends of the wires at one end...leaving the other end open wire. It is wise to solder the tips on after u have clamped them just to make sure they don't come undone. Now remember where to capacitors went? You have to solder those capacitors into the other ends of the required wires...soldering is easier with 2 people so find a friend while you're doing this. Now put the remaining tips on the other ends of the wires...including the capacitors. Now connect the corresponding wires to the crossover at the following terminals: Woofer (A and -) Mid (D and -) Tweeter (F and -). It is also a good idea to solder these on as well. Now connect the wires that have to go to the terminal...make sure you connect + to + and - to -. Next place the crossover towards the back of the box and mark where you want to mount it...a good spot is in the middle of the box toward the back. Now take a small drill bit and drill a little ways down into the box so it's easier to get the screws started. Next fasten down the crossover with the screws. Now start connecting your speakers up and connect the terminal in back. Test them out before you put EVERYTHING together to make sure they all work.

If you have any questions...email me back. I'm very sympathetic to anybody that is getting caught in this trap so I'm trying to help people out. Let me know if you need anything.

L8er.

Jim

Strength:

Hmmmm....I guess you can stack some books on top of the speakers.

Weakness:

Interesting sales pitch, but it becomes very obvious that they're definitely not legit.

This happened to me in Glendale, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix).

I was on the way to the bus stop early this morning to ride downtown and pick up my car from the shop. On the way over, two guys in a white Dodge Caravan pulled out of a bank parking lot and waved for my attention. I confronted the van and the guy in the passenger seat told me that they had just finished dropping off speakers at a local Harkins theatre, who only ordered 8 speakers, instead 8 pairs like they "thought." So, they handed me this glossy spec sheet saying that the speakers were worth $900 EACH and they were willing to sell for $200 per pair because their "boss was gonna get pissed otherwise." I noticed several things observing these schmucks:

1) They appeared to be college kids in their mid-20s.

2) You'll never find a legit dealer riding around in a van selling true audiophile-grade speakers. It just doesn't happen.

3) WTF are Acoustics? (excuse the vulgar language, but damn...)

4) Modern movie theatres would be out of their minds to equip their screen rooms with speakers that are not THX-certified.

5) I asked for their business license. They had none. They just gave me their boss's business card. Turns out that the telephone number printed on the card was phoney and disconnected from service.

6) At that point, I asked to look at the speakers, so they parked and cracked open one of the boxes. I looked at them, and they were definitely not $900 speakers. What a scam!

7) Eventually, I told the guys that I sell home audio equipment at Best Buy (albeit nothing pro-grade) and I think I have a good idea of what a decent speaker is. I told them that I was not interested.

The only regret I have is that I should have written down that license plate number. Scams like that make me sick and I feel very sorry for the dozens of people here that fell for them.

Like mentioned before, there's really nothing law enforcement agencies can do to an operation like this. From the get-go, the operation all seems to be legit, until you notice that these guys carry no form of licensing to sell the products. This is happening everywhere across the country. But I bet I can sick the media on them (which is sometimes a bit more humiliating).

Moral of the story: You really get what you pay for. If these speakers were REAL $900 a piece speakers, people definitely wouldn't be selling them for 1/5 the price. Doesn't that seem a little odd to you? Buy from a retailer.

Sorry guys,

I knew these were pieces of sh!t from the getgo. I'm so sorry that you guys got scammed. However, I sit here and laugh at all of you, not because you lost money (that always sucks) but how could you ever think that speakers out of the back of a van would be of top grade audiophile quality? Two similar guys were trying to pull the same scam on campus here at the University of Arizona. I called the cops from my cell phone and they got nailed! Sorry you guys bought into the scam.
