well, this occurs in the UK as well, 3 of us outside the bar at university and the white van pulls up, we bought 3 pairs for £390 - all 3 pairs still work (after some rocking parties), still sound ok, and alright we paid more than they were worth but I dont hold anything against any of these peeps who like us are just trying to feed themselves and their families.
relax dudes it aint that much money, and like has been said here before - it could have been worse

Well what can i say? I felt for it too, got scamed by some guy who sold me a Acoustic M1440 proffesional, well first time in my life so not that upset, (should of listen my intuition and pass the offer)paid about 140us (200cnd), and minuts later found out how quite the Sub was, funny enought, i was aproched by the same guy about 2 weeks ago (did't fall for it then), so i'll look for him now to get his Van and whatever he'll have in there, real market value for those speakers is about 140CND for a pair, i hope i can sell it to someone or just replace the sub with some Brand name Sub

Strength:

They LOOK impressive, and you can use them as stands for your real speakers...

Weakness:

Do I even have to say it?

I feel OK about this, because I bought my pair of "Acoustic Reference" back in 1994, before I could look this stuff up on the internet. They don't sound totally awful, but they have always had this "you've-been-ripped-off" aura around them. Perhaps I'm lucky and got the "First Edition"

Just a heads up for some of you. I was approached by the infamous White Van at a stoplight on Hwy 119 just outside of Boulder, CO. I doubt I would've given them the time of day anyway, but thanks to this site I was aware of the scam. Pretty funny actually. As soon as I saw a couple of teenagers pull up next to me in the van and ask me to roll down my window, I knew EXACTLY what was coming next. He didn't even have the word "speakers" out of his mouth yet, ("Hey buddy, you wanna buy some...???") and already I was laughing, letting them know that I was well aware of what the outcome of this transaction would be. They didn't seem to phazed by the whole thing. Just continued on their way down Foothills Pkwy to find the next sucker. CO license plate 471-CUJ. Brand new white Dodge. Sounds like these speakers actually work though, so not much illegal about this scam, just bad business practices. Anyone who purchased these try the Better Business Bureau yet?

Strength:

good sound quality at very high volumes, excellent bass range
the sub-woofer cone is also polypropolene, so you probably wont blow them

Weakness:

none aside from the bad rap they've got

i dont see what all the complaining is about. i purchased a pair of 9901 professionals for $350 from a guy who sold a friend of mine a fantastic pair of dynalab audio 3.8s (not 2.8s) the poor sound quality mentioned may be a lack of power, because I am quite pleased with mine

Not to add more depressing stories to this site, but I was also stupid enough to fall for the trick. It happened in 1999 in Boca Raton, FL. Some guy in a white van who said he was from a club, got extra speakers by mistake, needed to sell them. He showed me a picture of a brochure...they said they were about $800 each. He said he worked as a bartender in a bar in Miami. Anyways, I got him down to $300 for both, and here I am.

Same story... two guys, white van in a parking lot. Figured they were obsolete and stolen, maybe worth $500 or 6 tops. So I gave up a couple hundred...

Although I did enjoy the feeling of getting jacked for the first time. I'll see it coming next time... Can't wait...

My next project: make the necessary modifications to make them worth a little more.
