I listened to this product during an afternoon. It it atrocious! The mids are over done, and the overall sound is smeared. I'd put this as one of the very worst products for a center channel you could buy. I didn't...1 star!!!

Strength:

style, size

Weakness:

no tech info, no improvements for the price

The specifications for that speaker are nowhere to be found! Tried web site. Even at bose (1 800 444 bose) they couldn't give them. They said they don't publish them, so they couldn't give them. Namely Sensyvity and Frequency Responsre.
Are they ashamed of something?
BTW I returned it for a refund.

I purchased the Bose VCS-10 centre speaker about 6 months ago to go with a Dolby Digital Home Cinema System I was setting up.....up to then I had always liked Bose speakers but this one has me worried....boy is this a dude of a speaker.....it sounds awful....there was a big hole in the front soundstage....no matter what way I tweaked my amp nothing helped...the amp is rated as 120 watts by 5 so there is plenty of grunt there...I got rid of it about three weeks ago and bought a Mission 73c instead....there is no comparison...Bose this one sucks!!!!!!!!

Looks wise, this speaker is A class. It blends in real well on top of the TV.Sound wise, its pathetic. I bought a Yamaha2095 and it made me realize how important the center speaker is for overall home theater experience. Now I am trying to get rid of this. Do you want it? email to me rmantha@umich.edu.
If you see this email 4 or 5 months from now, chances are I sold it so dont bother. But otherwise, email me and I will sell to you for a good discount. Its in like new condition

Strength:

Small enough to fit in the tightest places

Weakness:

Poor Frequency Response

I owned the Bose VCS-10 for 5 month prior to selling it. It was the only center channel that I really listened to. I came apon the Carver deal at Costco and there has been no turning back since. The Carver sound richer and more room filling. The Bose left off a lot of the lower frequency sounds. The new JBL S-Studio Center is also a great center channel speaker. The sounds are tight and full. I would definately give the Bose a thumbs down in comparison. I think this is also true since Bose will not publish the specs of their speakers. At $199.00 the Bose is not a good center channel. I paid about $200 for the new JBL and there is no comparison.

Strength:

Sylish, dynamic range

Weakness:

a little hard to match

I don't know people, I had to look to see if we were talking about the same speaker here. I don't know if I happen to get a different one than all of you, but I am very impressed by this speaker. It was a nice addition to my RS-10 Infinity except they don't match up as well as I had hoped. IF anything, the Bose sounds a little cleaner to me. I tried an Infinity center and I wasn't all that impressed so I gave it away as a present. I bought the Bose and I love it. It is powered by a Sony DE935 receiver and with a little tweaking, it sounds great in my room.

Strength:

Bose name, very small

Weakness:

Paper drivers, plastic, flimsy cabinet, cheap drivers

I saw this speaker taken apart at my Paradigm Dealer. They said that they were using it to sell their speakers. I looked at the drivers that they pulled out and I was amazed that Bose could sell this to people and still go to bed at night. The drivers were made of paper. I looked at the back and said made in Mexico. I thought that Bose was made in the USA.

The Paradigm CC-170 is such a better speaker. It has real woofers and a real tweeter. Nice solid cabinet that sits nice on the TV and solid drivers.

All in all if you are looking to spend $200 on a center, get the Paradigm.

Strength:

Low aspect ratio, even dispersion, slow response

Weakness:

Price

#1; I do not like the Bose "spread a little bit of sound around a lot" for stereo projection, but was looking to fill in with something that would blend in with my thumping front Altec Rock&Rollers (sub is irrelevant).
#2; The VTC was a better spatial dispersion fit than other units of similar $ for my setup.
#3; The slow response provides a subtler projection of vocal tracks which are so often ridiculously enhanced one feels locked with the person speaking inside a garbage can.
#4; Yes, the frequency response is limited, but that is exactly what I was looking for in a center channel.
Purists will hate it. People who would rather enjoy the show, rather than marvel at the audio post-processing tricks and patches, will think it is "nice".
There is obviously much disagreement about what a home theatre system should sound like. Whenever that becomes a problem for me, I just crank my Altecs up (in 2-CH Stereo) and play along with my Les Paul & Marshall. I was watching too much TV, anyway!
