Strength:

Price to options ratio compared to other dvd players, great picture, hdcd, dual disc.

Weakness:

None so far

I would agree with most of the other reviews here that this dvd player is a very good buy. Especially for new technology. There are better players out there from all manufactures, but i think i'll wait untill they iron out all the little quirks. So far i'm very satisfied with my 3109.
But Linda Linda Linda if i may ask, if you only had your dvd player for 5 to 6 weeks and it started to act up could you not have returned it on warranty for repair or get a replacement. Just taking the loss and buying a new dvd player does not add up. Please forgive my ignorance if buying a product where you live does not offer you these options. But where i buy if the product broke down in that
short of time they would just replace it with a new one.

STARTING to get "Disc Errors"

Well I got this player about a year ago. Worked/works great. I must say though I do not rent DVDs much. I have rented about 3 DVDs one did Jam but there was quite a gash. BUT I have a collection of almost 100 DVDs and all are in PERFECT condition. I have been starting to get Disc Errors. I put in a DVD to watch. I can hear it spin and then I get the error. If I take the disc back out and put it in it works or if I cycle the power.
I am guessing it is because the lens is getting dirty. I have NO desire to take this damn thing apart. But if that what it comes to.. I just might have to.
I am looking for any ideas, help.. Why does this happen? How to fix it? Does toshiba help? will they replace it? Any feedback email me at udhorky@engineer.com

Thanks

Strength:

Easy to operate. Good picture quality. Handle both DVD and VCD well.

Weakness:

no fast forward... only skipping between track. I guess maybe all DVD players are built that way.

Good over value for the price. Excellent for beginner. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Very sharp video picture, good sound from video sources

Weakness:

Problematic laser assembly (factory defects),prone to jitters or freezes on some CDs, won't play CD-Rs

Purchased this player and started to use it with few problems. It is easy to use and the remote is well-laid out. It was a reasonable buy at $325US.

After three months I began to have tons of disk errors. The laser assembly has been replaced twice in the last 12 months (warrantee), and the player still displays weird artifacts when a very bright scene (such as a camera shot into a bright light or the sun) is played. On some disks, the play froze and/or stuttered (The Stand), and on other disks the scene became pixelated and froze (The 13th Floor).

Two tray system hasn't been a problem for me, and I don't notice multi-layer transitions. Fast-forward and reverse sucks, it only moves back entire chapters.

Overall the player has more problems than successes.

Strength:

Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, dual tray, HDCD, Excellent price/performance, good CD performance

Weakness:

Slow loading (not really an issue for me), clumsy remote, TV must be on to determine some status indications such as audio mode (6 channel, 2 channel, etc).

I've had the 3109 for a little over a year. At the time of purchase, it was a no-brainer. There simply was not another unit available under $500 with this set of features. In particular, having a 5.1 ready receiver without a decoder, the built-in DD decoder was a requirement and is one that works quite well.

I like the dual tray aspect as well. While the unit cannot automatically switch over, it is nice for keeping two movies queued up or a CD you may want to hear later. It takes perhaps 20 seconds to switch trays and identify the disc, but I don't find this objectionable.

CD performance was a secondary consideration, but it is quite acceptable in this regard. It lacks slightly in performance to a Cal Audio dedicated player that I have, but the 3109 plays HDCD which the other does not. The 3109 is good enough such that I moved the Cal Audio to another room. It is unclear whether HDCD is a great improvement or whether this will even proliferate as a standard, but it shows that Toshiba thought enough of CD performance to include it. In a unit at this price, this is commendable.

In short, I have been quite pleased with the performance of the 3109. I was a bit skeptical at first given all the features at this price point, but quality is there. I have experienced an infrequent pixelation or freezing problem, but I attribute this to the disc not the player. The remote is poorly designed and is difficult to use in the dark. However, the basics are well done. Picture is quite good and sound is exceptional. Reliability has been flawless.

One feature that would be nice would be dual laser for DVD and CD, but that cannot be expected at this price. Apparently, that may not even really be necessary.

My expectations for this player have been met or exceeded. I have no intention at this time to upgrade and will probably only do this when I can take advantage of progressive scan. Until then, should reliability and performance remain, I expect to continue to enjoy this player.

Value id definitely 5 stars. Overall is a 4.5 due to the clumnsy remote and limited display information, but I have to round to a 5 here as well- 4 seems too low.

Strength:

Component video out, DTS and DD compatible, dual tray (hey, I like it), digital audio out

Weakness:

Remote isn't backlit, FF/Rev buttons on remote

I've had mine for about nine months now and have had no problems whatsoever. No skipping, freezing, etc. Occasionally it won't recognize a disk, but nothing that an eject and reinsert won't fix.

I can't comment on the sound quality as I'm using the coax digital audio out and the decoder on my receiver.

I've never noticed the video quality, which I think is a positive comment. After all, I'd only notice problems, right? My 27" TV isn't big enough to expose some problems that might exist, but so far, I've been pleased.

I actually like the dual tray feature.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to use the component video connections, but hope to upgrade the ol' TV soon. That was a prerequisite for the purchase.

Like everyone else, I would have preferred to have separate buttons for chapter skip and visual scan, but I've seen the remotes of some of my friends' DVD players, and quite honestly, the Toshiba remote looks pretty good after that.

I think the settings menus give you ample control over the player. (You can turn off that annoying beep when the player receives a remote command.)

All in all, I'm happy with the player. Although cheaply built, it has many features for the money. Yeah, it's lightweight, but how many times do you lift a component in your rack to show it off? "Check out the weight of that baby!" Puh-leez. Just put it on a shelf and forget about how flimsy it feels.

Strength:

Built in 5:1 output. Very convinient having the double tray for those nights you have a double header.

Weakness:

None really, except occasionally I get a split second freeze on a frame during the movie.

Overall, I find this DVD to be the best value for the money. Espeically when you consider it has the built in 5:1 outputs. It is very easy to setup and use, and the remote is simple and not overly complicated like some of the Sony unitsl.

Strength:

easy to setup, audio is good, no trouble with any movie so far, HDCD?

Weakness:

none yet

This is my first DVD player and I've got to say that so far I love it. I don't know why it took so long to buy a DVD player (maybe WAF?). I don't have anything to compare it to, but this player has all the functions I need and sounds good. I don't know why so many people complain about remote controls, all it takes is a little getting used to. I've played a few HDCD encoded discs on the player and they sounded pretty good, better than the Harman Kardon FL8550 I used to have. And of course the video from DVDs is outstanding compared to VHS. If you looking for an inexpensive DVD player with excellent video and good sound look no further. This player has been replaced by the SD2200 but may still be available from uBid. I like the face of the 3109 better than the 2200, it doesn't look as
cheap.
