Disc Error After reading a lot of negative reviews here, I am starting to think that I am not the only victim using the DVD player. When I purchased it a little more than a year ago it was a good deal with a lot of features. Everything works fine, except it doesn't play some of my VCDs. Well, no big deal I thought, maybe some of those VCDs I have are in poor quality. So I didn't think much about it. Similar Products Used: JVC XV-521BK |

After having left a review over a year ago, I was surprised to come back and see all of the problems reported. If there weren't so many of you complainers, I probably wouldn't believe you. I have had mine over a year. I have been lucky to have had no problems. I love the machine. S-video hookup to my 36 inch Sony and digital coaxial hookup to my Onkyo TXds575. Overall a superb package, and I have loved my home theater setup for over a year. Rarely, I listen to audio cd's with no problems whatsoever. Good luck to those unfortunate, but I would highly recommend this product. My father bought one (completely independent to my purchase) and he has had no problems either. |

Strength:
Built-in Dolby Digital Decoding. Dual Tray. Nice Menus.
Weakness:
Huge remote. I bought this in April, after debating between other multi-disk players with built-in dobly digital decoding. I choose the Toshiba, well because it was a steal at the time. And I have found it to still be a great value. I have not encountered any error or trouble with it thus far. The sound is great, picture through the use of S video jack is great and the menus are complete. The remote is perhaps "large" however it is complete. The Colorstream® Component Video Output is nice if you happen to own a Toshiba television or other compatable T.V. Similar Products Used: first dvd player. |

Build quality, features, outputs
Weakness:
None for the money This player's tray operation is silky smooth and I don't notice any operational noise. It might be a few seconds slower when it comes to stopping and ejecting. But, that's not a problem for me. The remote works fine and the set up is not hard. The picture and sound is excellent and I'm not yet using the componet outputs nor have I used the HDCD capability. The zoom feature is pretty cool for concerts but I probably will never use it for movies. The same with the camera angle ability. I bought it at eCost for $265 and they delivered as promised!! Its well worth these kind of $$$. If you go to Ubid, watch out, their units are often refurbished and go for the same kind of money!! Similar Products Used: Sony DVD S330 |

Haven't got it yet
Weakness:
Haven't got it yet I bought this unite after reading the reviews from this site, so if it stinks I'm going to blame all of you! Could have bought a Sharp DU600, Konica or Samson for $199 but seams more than 90% of the reviews give this unit top grades and it turned out to be only $20 more at mercata than other units at shopping.com.The ratings are just because they have to be given, is their one dvd that is best overall? How come so much difference between players? When you bought VHS it really did not matter which manufacture they were all alike. Similar Products Used: VHS, this is first dvd other than Dell Software Decoding on my PC. |

Strength:
Great sound, and picture.
Weakness:
I paid close to $360 but that was about 1 year ago. All DVD players whether it be a $100 RCA or $1000 Denon sound and show picture exactly the same. I was reading a Stereo Review and thats when I realized they're right. Stereo Review clearly stated that the RCA they tested to the Denon they tested had no difference in picture or sound quality. I was skeptical and didn't believe them so I started testing many DVD players and saw that they were right all DVD players show no difference just like VCRS except if you use different VCRS with more or less heads. The 3109 plays sound and picture the exact same way as does the HK. So why are some more expensive then others 1. Features. 2. Brand Names. 3. Marketing Jealousy... these were the conclusions Stereo Review came up with and I back them all the way. Similar Products Used: Denon players, Onkyo, Harman Kardon, Sony. |

Strength:
Excellent build quality - tray mechanism is smooth and quiet. Excellent performer. Versatile connectivity.
Weakness:
Audio CDs I have owned this unit for 9 months and have had no problems - zero! I don't know how many DVD's I've watched - upwards of 100 - but I have never had a freezed frame. I don't particulary care for how audio CD's sound on it, but that's not a problem because I have a dedicated CD player which sounds very good on my system. This machine has tons of inputs so it will work with just about any set-up - digital connections, analog, s-video or composite, 5.1 outputs, etc. I paid $320 about a year ago and I understand it can be had for about $100 less today. A+ recommendation. |

Playback gets blocky Been using this guy for a couple of weeks now and overall I am very happy. However, some movies, and specifically some scenes in movies (particularly Highlander: Directors Cut) look very blocky and blended sometimes? Anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Is this just a fact of life with DVD players? All the discs are clean, and I am viewing it on a sony 27' WEGA via SVIDEO. When it plays clean it is a great unit. Dolby Digital, DTS, Dual trays, Price, Toshiba Quality, Plays HDCD's.
Weakness:
No continuation from one tray to the next, won't play burned CD's. I got this DVD player for my girlfriend online for about $285.00. I know that prices have come down since then, but I got a good price at the time (Christmas). I have noticed a minor frame lock-up from time to time on certain DVD movies, but can't say that its enough to bother me. This unit is one of the few that will play HDCD's (the next generation of cd's?) so you won't have to upgrade. The dual tray is nice when you want to keep a music cd in one slot and watch a DVD in another. I found the remote to be user friendly and am very satisfied with unit as a whole. I am using an AR Toslink/Bettercables digital audio cable to my reciever and a Bettercables s-video to my Toshiba tv. Dollar for dollar this is a great buy for anyone just getting into the DVD world... Similar Products Used: None |
