Strength:

features for the price

Weakness:

clumsy remote, cheap/faulty laser pickup mechanism fails
after 3 months use

anyone experiencing the dreaded "disc error" problem
with this unit? the unit is not even a year old and it
is failing!! audio/video components should last longer!!

Toshiba should institute a swap/exchange program to
the SD2200 or issue credits/rebates like they did in
the settlement of the class action suit for using
faulty floppy controllers:

owners of failing units should email Toshiba demanding they
address the problem like they did with the faulty floppy
controllers.

Strength:

features for price

Weakness:

cheap laser

I have had the 3109 for less than 6 months and have had nothing but problems with it.

I began getting "insert disc" errors in the 4th month and took it into an authorized Toshiba repair shop. I was told that I was 5 days past the 90 day parts and a labor warranty and would have to pay a $45 bench charge plus whatever labor costs to repair. I ended up spending $90 bucks and as soon as I had it back home it began failing again. Returned it for repair and they took 30 days to replace the laser due to the part being back ordered. They obviously have a problem with the laser assembly.

I have had it out of the shop for about a month and it's failing again with same errors. Called Toshiba to complain and spent 30 minutes on hold.

Whatever you do, avoid this product.

I give it 4 stars for features for price, but I have to rate it a -10 on quality/reliability.

Strength:

Reliability, picture, sound

Weakness:

A little slow-loading

I have had this player now for over a year and have experienced no problems at all. Very reliable. Can be had for cheap now that the new Toshibas are out. Got mine for $299 last year and now can be had for about a hundred bucks less. It was a good deal last year and should be a no-brainer if you can find one now.

Strength:

Built in Decoder, Component video, Fiber output

Weakness:

None until now

I bought this unit to replace the Panasonic that I let my wife take out of the country. I loved this unit up until it's 10th month. It started giving me disk errors when reading audio cd's, then progressed to the point that it will not play any audio cd's or vcd's and hangs on some dvd's. At first I accused my teenage son of screwing with it, but after reading all these posts I see that the Toshiba 3109 must have been destined for failure from the start. Currently I'm looking for my receipt and hoping I purchased sears extended/replacement warranty with this product. If not I may have to contact toshiba directly but I do not want to go through numerous repairs.

Weakness:

Cannot Play Many Popular Disks

Yes, I too am a victim of "No Disc" or "Disk Error" problem. Now, I am going to transfer my aggression onto the unsupecting unit. It cannot play Mission to Mars, MI2, or Perfect Storm. It cannot play Alice Cooper. It is going to die.
