Strength:

picture quality, sound quality, build quality for the price.

Weakness:

Even though everyone mentions this, the confusion on which disc is going to play

First I will start off with my system
receiver: Harman Kardon AVR80
center speaker: M&K
left and right: M&K
Sub: M&K
Surround: M&K
VCR: Mitsubishi
Television: Mitsubishi VS-6051 (60")

I bought this system in 1996 for $10,000. It was the top of the line receiver and speakers that harman and M&K had at the time. I thought the sound quality and video quality from my VCR was exceptional. Then came out dolby digital and dvd. I did not update to it right away for because I was unsure if it would stick around forever. So finally I went to Nivers (where I bought my original system) and the guy who setup my system wanted me to get the Harman Kardon Signature 3.0 dvd player. MSRP $2,000. I said I would think about it and went on the internet and did some research. What I found was that the dvd players now are not supported by HDTV. There was no way that I was going to spend 2K on something that I could not use in a few years when I update to HDTV. So I told him that when I got a HDTV and when HK came out with a dvd player that supported HDTV I would come back. So I went on the internet and did some research on other dvd players. I came across the Toshiba SD-3109. In every single review board the purchasers of this DVD player raved about this dvd player. So I went to onsale.com and put a bid on this dvd player. I ended up winning it at $271. A lot cheaper than the $2,000 HK receiver. I hooked it up with Monster S-video and Monster AC-3 interlinks and I am amazed with the picture quality and the sound quality. I am very glad I bought this DVD player. I also signed up for the Marquee program from www.netflix.com where I get 4 rentals a month and no late fees for $16/month. I love this player.

This dvd produces a much better piture than my Sony dvd S300. You can count the wrinkles on James Taylor's forehead. Buy it. Enough said.

Weakness:

slow startup

I have had this product since it first came out, and just wanted to give it the praise it deserves. For the price, I don't think you can get a better player out there. The only complaint I have is the slow startup and the confusion over which of the two trays to start using. But once it gets going, I couldn't be happier. You will not be dissapointed.

Strength:

Dual Tray Loading! Easy to use remote! Performance is good! Better than comparable models!

Weakness:

The only thing I would worry about is the belt breaking on the tray!

I think Toshiba and SONY are the best companies for electronics! I own a SD-3109 and I love it! I love the dual disk tray, never had any problems with it! Fast disk change! Awesome graphics and audio! I just bought a newer one for my parents! They love it too! Worth every penny!

Strength:

Easy to use, solid performance.

Weakness:

Remote is not very good.

I just got this DVD player about 1 week ago and I wanted to share my first impressions with everyone.

I love this DVD player. After a few months of research and auditioning various DVD players, I chose the 3109. I thought for the price and performance, it was a hard player to beat. I've seen 4 movies so far (Matrix, Notting Hill, Ghostbusters, Pushing Tin) and all have played flawlessly, even if Pusing Tin is the worst movie I've seen in years. I love the picture. Even my girlfriend noticed how nice the picture was (I know, I couldn't believe it either). I just want everyone to know what a great player this is. I will follow up with a more in-depth review in a month or so. For now, five stars all around.

Strength:

Great picture, dual trays

Weakness:

slow loading, broke a gear (this seems to be a common problem) circuit board problem that requires a total board replacement because they don't sell just the needed chip. Repair more than I paid for whole player new!

I don' recommend this player because it is apt to break and expensive to repair. It is very slow to load the disk to play. I bought a 99.00 Apex as a holdover and it loads very fast. I had not used this player more than 60 times before it broke.

Strength:

easy set-up, great video-audio

Weakness:

donno yet

For a little more than 100 bucks less (Toshiba v. Denon), this player should do me until some new and better comes out.If you are a cheap shlung like I, do not spend more than 300-400 on a player. We watched "Arlington Road" and "American History X" for first two movies, and I can not complain a bit. Awesome sound and fantastic picture ( on my $250 Panasonic TV, $349 Technics 930 DD-DTS Receiver, Mirage FrX-3s, and medium quality Monsters from the local Ultimate Electronics).
Thanks http://www.audioreview.com for the superb website; it was great research tool to read other people's reviews.

Strength:

Provides a crystel clear picture. Easy to hook up.

Weakness:

Cannot pull zoom mode display off of picture

I looked at a lot of models before purchasing the 3109. It has been a superior product so far. I have friends who purchase other systems from Panasonic and Sony and experienced gliches in play from certain DVD's. I have not experienced any of the problems with the 3109. It was very easy to hook up and is digital ready with component outlets to hook up a color stream to a TV. I know others have concern for the remote but once you get use to it, it's pretty easy to use. You can remove the other displays from showing up on the screen except for the Zoom which can become distracting if you enlarge the picture from letterbox. Overall it has been a great machine.

Casual Listener

I bought it in May last year. After three months, I got the
'insert disk error', and cannot read any disk. As I bought
it from USA, I have no warranty on it. It is too expensive
to repair it here in Canada. So, I dissembled it and cleaned
the lens myself. I play it up today, no problem at all.
It is not very difficult to disemble it. Just with care and
turn the POWER OFF. It may damage your body if the power is on. Also, I found the box said "MADE IN JAPAN", but the
laser housing is made in China.
If you have no other choice, try to do it yourself.

Compare with my other Sony DVD 550, Sony has a better picture, but it does not have the zoom feature.
The Toshiba remote is the worst design I ever seen.

Strength:

Picture and sound quality are excellent

Weakness:

Does not load disks and freezes constantly

This is my first DVD player. It worked fine for six weeks. Then I started to get a "No Disk" or "Insert Disk" message every time I put in a disk. It also freezes when performing menu functions and chapter selection. I would say this is a "lemon" I am trying to decide if I should get it repaired or just cut my losses and ditch it for a better brand, possibly Sony.
