Strength:

zoom,dual tray,colorstream outputs along with s video

Weakness:

nothing major

This is a very good dvd player. The picture is crisp and the dts sound is great in my home theater. If you do not like the wide screen format (most dvd's) you can even enlarge the pic with zoom {although at max zoom some resolution is lost}. Overall I definately recommend this dvd player to anyone looking for high quality.

Strength:

Excellent quality picture and easy to use.

Weakness:

Wish it had DTS decoder. If I buy a DTS decoder, it will surely also have a Dolby Digital decoder built in, too - redundant.

Very satisfied with the performance. Dolby Digital, HDCD !

Strength:

dual tray, built-in dd5.1 & dts decoder, component output

Weakness:

remote control, down conversion

i have been watching dvd's for the past 2 years using my encore5x dvd-rom drive that's hooked up to my 32" trinitron.
and it totally blew away vhs viewing, then came valueamerica.com..giving out value dollar deals and i was able to purchase a toshiba 3109 for only $249 SHIPPED!.
So after hooking this up to the same sony 32" t.v. via s-video jack...i played one of my favorite dvd's the "5th-element" and it totally blew away my dvd-rom picture quality....colors where fully saturated but there was no bleeding....the image was much sharper and detailed , truly there was no comparison to my old dvd-rom player that was also hooked up to the s-video port.
plus i love the twin disk tray and the vcd feature...if you are a karaoke fanatic, then you know that there are alot of
cheap karaoke vcd's floating around for only $5 bucks and
the 2nd tray feature allows me to put on the next song i would like to sing w/o any interruption.
well that's my 5 cents.

Strength:

HDCD capability, Dual Tray, DTS DD output.

Weakness:

no jog shuttle capability, no backlit remote

I Really like the dual tray feature. I find the remote ugly,
A backlit feature would have been nice. I havent had the chance to use the HDCD feature yet, im sure that it will rock, I really love the picture quality it totally blows away any VCR. I would highly recommend this product for the
beginer in audio and video in the 21st century. I'm sure that my next DVD player will have more features, for the moment this unit will suffice.

I have been using the Tos 3109 now for a little over 3 mo's and just wanted to comment on how solid of a DVD player this is. Alone it is an excellent value, (you can find it online for about $330 after shipping) but besides just having the right price it's features and quality are hard to beat. You have DD and DTS compatibility, dual DVD tray holder, zoom x3, on screen menu's and a few extras. I give the picture and sound 5 stars. I did a lot of research when looking for a DVD player and the 3109 came up everytime as the best choice for the price . This is a great product that you can feel confident in purchasing.

Weakness:

Reliability

When it works it's a great machine. It's just plain unreliable. Got it at the end of July and worked fine for 3 months (20 movies), with the usual freezing on Enemy as noticed by lots here. Then refused to recognise any disc's so sent away for firmware upgrade to ROM 2.100. Used it a few times to check it, alternating with my 2109 and now it's reading everything as disc error. This is the only consumer electronic item I have had problems with in 15 years. I think it's not quite ready for prime time. Can't trust it anymore. Buy local so you can return it when it crashes!

Strength:

HDCD and DD decoding, DTS compatible output, Dual tray

Weakness:

Does not always recognize HDCD encoded disks. Power off/on seems to correct it. Lack of FF button on remote. If two disks loaded, no way to tell it which disk to play, seems to just pick one.

Excellent sound and picture quality, especially in this price range. HDCD disks sound very good, but only marginally better than non-HDCD disks. To my surprise, HDCD decoding only occurs using the analog jacks. If a disk in already in tray 2, and you put another disk in tray 1, it automatically starts playing disk 2 (WHY?). If you have both trays full, there is no way to tell it which disk to play, you can only press the play button and see which one starts - there is a disk swap button, fortunately. Had a problem with the dual tray, when a disk was put in one tray, and the tray closed, the other automatically ejected. I closed this one, and the other ejected. After about 4 times both stayed closed. Another quirk - unit has a HDCD indicator that lights when a HDCD disk in playing, but it does not always recoginze them. If these situations continue, I may return it and look for something more reliable.

Overall, though, a very good unit but with some quirks and could use some refinement. Do not purchase this unit if you are mainly interested in HDCD, get a CD only player for that functionality.

Strength:

Solid build quality,Toshiba reliability, low price(onSale.com) and of course the great sight and sound of the DVD format....bye,bye VHS!

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R's(not a problem for me...yet). However, I didn't buy the DVD player to play CD's and CD-R's anyway. I'll let my 200-disc Sony CD changer take care of those duties.

I bought my Toshiba 3109 for $279 plus $15 shipping from onSale.com several weeks ago. That price also included the 5 free DVD's and 13 free DVD rentals at Blockbuster offer. The DVD format is second to none. I don't think it gets any better than this. I don't plan to enter another movie theater once I get my Panasonic 36" Flat Screen TV next X-mas(2000). The surround effects in Twister were just awesome and I didn't have to leave my sofa to experience it. I needed a DVD player with the built-in Dolby Decoder because my A/V receiver is only a Dolby Digital Ready model(Technics 530...to be replaced this year with a Sony DB930...I can't wait). I haven't had any problems so far and it even made it through "The Matrix" with very little problems(the picture flickered for about ten seconds in the middle of the movie but that was the extent of it). I'll see how it fares with "Enemy of the State" as that also seems to be a problem disc for many players. I also bought this unit for Toshiba's reputation for reliability and quality products. I had also considered a Panasonic model for the same reasons but it was much more expensive. I saw that many of the previous reviews have blasted the 3109's remote but I'll have to refrain from that...for now. Maybe I'll change my mind after a couple months of usage but I'm content with it at this point. Overall, a great product and I guess I'll summarize the entire DVD format in two words..."It ROCKS!!!

Just here to give the player a deserved pat on the back. This is my first DVD player and I couldn't have picked a better machine. I have read a lot of reviews, both good and bad, and I have to place my vote on the pro 3109 side.
