Strength:

Great value, Dual tray

Weakness:

Lack of auto play on second disk

This is my first DVD player and there is no comparison between it and my VCR. The clarity of the picture and ability to use S-Video to my TV makes it stand out. The CD sound is even better than my old mini system with its CD player. I have watched several movies and have not noticed any problems. Can't wait to hook up my surround speakers and get the full effect. I wish that the player would go to the second disk once the first one finished. The remote takes care of that problem. Considered the Sd2109, but glad I got the 3109.

Strength:

HDCD, DTS Out

I haven't used HDCD yet, but DTS works well. Dual tray may be a plus except it's very slow and annoying. Picture quality is excellent and for the price it performs good. However, you get what you pay for and not much more.

Strength:

Good Bang for the Buck, Dual Tray, Component Outs

Weakness:

Doesn't play CDRs, CDRWs, but then again, not many do. Fast frame/skip buttons on remote take awhile to get used to.

Have had this unit for 2.5 months and so far, no major problems. Bought it for $279 at www.mercata.com ($50 off for first-time buyers - xmas special). I really like the dual-tray feature. It's true the trays are flimsy, but unless you're going to be using them as cup-holders, they should hold out just fine. Have watched Matrix with no problems. Saving Private Ryan gave me menu glitches straight out of the case, where the picture and sound would cut in and out. After playing it a few more times and cleaning the DVD, it seems to have gone away. The disc switching feature has gotten funky on me three times so far. Pressing disc select on the remote or unit itself would give me nothing but a beep. Ejecting the discs seems to solve the problem. I've had one freeze up while fast framing. Still minor glitches as far as I'm concerned.

Remote

This is my first DVD purchase and i am very pleased with it. This machine is very easy to operate except the remote could be better. This blows away VHS, I hooked the player directly to the T.V. and the sound and clarity was 100% better not even using a reciever. Would recommend this product to anyone who wants good quality at an affordable price. Got mine from Vanns.com for $320.00 when you join there club (it is free).

Won this unit at U-bid ( NEW UNIT). Connected and powered unit as soon as I received it - Gave me a 'Loading disc' msg. for 15 minutes and then 'Invalid Disc' message. This happened with all of the DVDs, VCDs and CD's I had. Planning to call Tosh Service but having read what others have posted, this may not prove very useful. Will return unit to Ubid if Toshiba does not respond. (UBid has one week free return policy for DOA items) Unit has July 99 for date of Manufacture and it still beats me how a hardware manufacturer can ship something with design flaws in them (many have reported this problem)

Very Very disappointed with this Toshiba player - Good reviews and good deals on Panasonic A120.. maybe should consider that!!!

Cannot go below one star...

Well, to be honest Lee is right... I went to go see the SD3109 for myself... having looked at the specs... (HDCD, and dual tray) thinking it was a steal for $399.. with HDCD at least.. and was disappointed with the quality. The trays looked very cheap... almost glued on...(and hehe the unit is lighter than the remote ironically(what are they puting into remotes these days?^_^) Right next to it was Sony's 7000, and 7700,.. big difference...I bought a used 7000 and use the fiber optic out... to feed my Theta Chroma 396 HDCD D/A converter...(big difference)I give it 3 stars because it is only $399($319) mail order.. and has some interesting features... but you can't compare it to the Sony.. being in a different price class overal. but a used 7000 would be a better choice for even a casual listener.

I recently purchased a new home, and accordingly I kept my priorities in order. The home theater was one of the first purchases - thus the plastic porch furniture in the kitchen. I purchased an RSX965 along with B&W 602 Fronts, CC6 Center, DS6 Surrounds, an an ASW-1000 sub. The usuall source is a Toshiba 3109, into a Mitsubishi 50" Diamond (If the reason for porch furniture wasn't clear before ...)
The Toshiba DVD was the choice because of overall value. It has all the major features I wanted, mainly DTS. I've determined after wasting a lot of money in the past on electronics where to put the major part of the investment. A fortune on a source that's not 100% standardized is not worth it. The Toshiba turns out as a good performer without busting a budget. DVD picture and sound quality are excellent and consistent. I've seen very little blocking in the picture, and that just means I need to do the video store's job for them and clean the rental DVD.

I have noticed some tracking issues with some of my music CD's. It is picky about the disc being very very clean. I can play some tracks in a cheaper CD player that the Toshiba DVD won't pick up propperly. I would think that if a $50 portable CD player can read the disc, or the stock CD player in my truck ... this player should.

There is one other thing I don't like. The player holds two discs, and it insists upon having one in the reader at all times. If I pop out disc 1 that is in the reader, and have disc 2 loaded ... disc 2 will automatically load. Sometimes I just want to leave the one in waiting in place, and replace the one I popped out. Not significant to performance, but very annoying.

I've had my 3109 for almost five months now. I've had zero problems. The sound and video performance is very good. The dual tray is handy. My wife especially, loves the zoom feature- she hates the black out sections of widescreen displays.
Is the 3109 the best performance player on the market? No. However, to get a significantly better player, you will need to pay over a $1,000. With the 3109 you get all the latest features for a little more than $300. This unit is by far the best value. If you have a budget or a wife with bedroom furniture aspirations, I highly recommend it.

Weakness:

Remote is hard to use

This is my first DVD player and by going through all the information I could find decided that I wanted the SD-3109.

I was browsing OnSale.com's Auctions and found that it is one of their auction items and won it for $279.

So far I am very pleased with it.

Remote Control

Well, I picked this up from Best buy free.. ( I had to take MSN and I am quite happy with that)!. I wanted upgrade my DVD player from Pioneer 505 which I bought when the DVD players were about to make waves in market. This player is really nice. The picture is quite sharp, and the color rendering is natural. Sound reproduction is good. However not playwed much with the built-in decoder as I have my Denon receiver. I won't bother about the decoder inside the DVD plaeyer as that's what I didn't buy it for. The remote control is akward. The enter button is out of place. Above all I am quite happy with this. Also I like the feature of 2 disk, but it takes time to switch tray. I watched Armageddon and i noticed the split second hold during the layer switch thought I never found it in any other dvds.
Anyway, the final word is it's a nice player to have with the price of $349 ( the original price!).
