Strength:

nice layout, simple remote control, good manual

Weakness:

slighty longer load times compare to other dvd

I bought this 3109 one month ago and there's no turning back. Dvd is just awesome. I had no trouble setting it up. I also had no trouble playing a troubled DVD, the MATRIX, over and over. It has handle over 15 dvd's I threw at it with no problems.
The dual trays are useful if you rented two or more dvds, just play the next one after youre done watching the first.
Have no use for HDCD, still, a very good buy.

Strength:

Zoom, color, dual disc tray, gold plated jacks

Weakness:

does not automatically switch to the disc 2 after watching disc 1 (vice versa)

This is a great dvd player considering its price point. I was sold on the features of the SD-3109. I especially like the zoom feature--works great when you don't want to watch letterbox movies. My SD-3109 is hooked up to a 55" Mitsubishi using Monster Cable S-video and to a Sony STR-DA30ES receiver via optical cable, Phase Linear speakers, Velodyne 12" subwoofer. The effect is awesome! Hey, I haven't been to a movie theater in 6 months. Need I say more?

Strength:

Zoom, picture, everything so far BUT ....

Weakness:

The Fast foward and rewind on the player is the SAME exact button as the chapter skip, thus if you don't hit the button the coorect way, you skip to the chapter. TOSHIBA make it a separate button!!!

Read reviews here and bought it. Great Player- Love the ZOOM

Strength:

sharp video, excellent color, above average on CD music, HDCD capable, and dual tray

Weakness:

does not read CDR.

For $300, this is a excellent DVD player (got it at ubid.com). I have this player for 6 months and have no problem with disc sync or problem with not loading the disc. Video is sharp and clear. DD and DTS is great. HDCD sound is little bit better than regular CD, don't have to have it but it came with the player, why not.

Strength:

HDCD, twin tray, DTS, Dolby digital, audio & visual quality.

Weakness:

Does not play recordable CD's, remote control for audio

I just hate the fact that this multipurpose machine does not read recordable CD's. With today's technology, I can't believe it, lame. Does Toshiba make recordable CD's? Other than that it has held up well, good audio (especially HDCD's) and video quality.

Strength:

Excellent video and audio quality! Easy to use remote (could have been backlit) Good onscreen menu system.

Weakness:

Player shuts off after a period of inactivity (Some might consider this a plus, but it can be annoying. No eject on the remote (Minor)

A great player!! Video and audio quality are excellent (Passes black test). Great review in "Home Theater". Only gripes are the power down thing mentioned above and that it starts to play the second DVD when the top one is ejected to change discs, it can get annoying having to switch it back when you put in the new disc (not sure where the logic was in that one.

Strength:

Excellent video and audio quality. East setup, dual tray

Weakness:

FF/Rev on same button as chapter skip. Annoying. Dual tray sometimes slow to load.

An excellent dvd player. I bought this 6 months back and i've been very happy with it. I love the dual tray feature which allows me to play those "dual" dvds. Overall a good value for the money.

Strength:

Great picture, incredible sound (DD 5.1 and DTS). Love the dual-tray feature, HDCD is cool.

Weakness:

I have had occasional problems reading discs. Good Will Hunting Collectors Edition will not play at all. About 3 other DVDs wouldn't load until I cleaned the edges off with a rag and even then it can be fussy. This has proven to be a real pain. CDR's don't work, which sucks because at least half of my music is on CDRs. Also, I have VCDs on CDR which can't be read by the machine. Remote isn't up to par.

I think this is a good effort by Toshiba, and I have been a big fan of their products in the past (I also own a Toshiba VCR and TV). I'm not sure if my disc reading problems are isolated to my machine, which sucks if I got a lemon. Regardless, I think Toshiba made a quality player (when it actually PLAYS) and is well worth the money.
