Weakness:
Remote (FF, REW) This is my first personal DVD player and what a player it is. I wasn't sure if I would like the dual tray system, but I find myself using it all the time. HDCD Decoding is a noticeable improvement and I like it. If I had to pay extra for it, I probably wouldn't. But it basically comes for free. The video is very nice. The downconversion on anamorphic discs leaves a bit to be desired. Hopefully, I'll remedy that with a widescreen soon. :^) In any case, I prefer this kind of downconversion over the softening kind like the sony's that I have seen. My only gripe (and the main reason for only 4 stars) to an otherwise wonderful machine is that the remote combined some buttons that I'm still not used to. If someone has discrete codes for FF and Rewind vs. Chapter skip, I would love them for my Pronto. |

Strength:
A solid almost flawless DVD player. The picture quality is sharp and the built-in Dolby Digital Decoder is perfect in conjunction with my Sony Receiver with the analogue input.
Weakness:
The remote is poorly designed with no easy way to fast-forward play (i.e. 2X, 8X, etc.) It also lacks a jog/shuttle and backlighting. In addition, the scan conversion from 16:9 to 4:3 is to say the least...quite horrific. I would never use this on this DVD player Overall, the Toshiba SD3109 is an excellent DVD player with the minimal amount glitches. It features a built-in Dolby Digital decoder and a twin-tray disc which comes in quite handy for double feature showings. It also plays regular Audio CD and VCD. However, don't even bother to play CD-R and CD-RW disc on this baby! For the price and features and an almost flawless player, it is one not to be missed. |

Strength:
Good picture quality
Weakness:
Looks little cheesy It is a very nice player and great picture quality. Good value for the money. Nice to have is the dual tray so you can have two movies in it. The HDCD is overrated in my opinion and if you don't need or like the dual tray feature go for the Toshiba 2109 instead. Similar Products Used: TOshiba 2109 |

Audio and flexibility
Weakness:
crappy remote and some glitches Great DVD player except for a compatibility problem with Enemy of the State. Toshiba is replacing my firmware (1.08R) to a newer version to correct this. This is my 1st DVD player so I have limited experience so far. I think they could have designed that Scan/FFW button on the remote better though. Overall I'm very happy with this model. Strength:
Excellent value for the money.
Weakness:
None as of yet. The 3109 is one of the best value for the money. I have yet to have any problems with this unit despite the fact I've only had it for about 3 months. |
