You cannot beat this DVD player for the price. Got mine at a Kroger grocery store for $199!

It's awesome! Even has DTS, and composite and component outs. S-video also of course.

Strength:

Overall value for the money.

Weakness:

Remote could be better...but you get used to it!

Excellent picture and sound. Didn't notice the spinning noise others have noticed. The zoom feature is very cool. This is the best bargain out there at about $250 for an entry level model. The remote is small but you'll get used to it. I almost bought the higher-end Toshiba SD-3109 which included the Dolby Digital Decoder (and a few other features) because my current receiver is only Pro Logic. Glad I didn't. I'll take the $150 I saved on this model over the SD-3109 (or similar models) and apply it towards an upgraded receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS. The SD-2109 has Dolby Digital and DTS output so it will work great. I recommend not buying a box with the decoder. You're wasting your money! Would have rated all 5's if the remote was better.

Strength:

Great DVD player for the price. Found it cheap through http://eccobay.tempsite.net. They had a large number of coupons online to stores like 800.com, hifi.com etc....

Weakness:

No optical and spinning is a bit loud.

Great bang for your buck

Strength:

Great playback quality,DD/DTS output

Weakness:

Hate to sound redundant, but the remote sucks

Will take any DVD you throw at it. Full featured, user friendly. Optical output would be nice, but coax does just fine. Yeah, the buttons on the remote are small and not backlit. But for money spent,it will not dissapoint.

I just picked up this unit yesterday, and rented The Negotiator and Rush Hour. I like the unit except for a few things I noticed. The front of the unit looks cheap, the buttons look like somehting from K-mart. Loading is too slow. A couple of times I noticed the picture freeze for a second or so, not sure if it was swithching layers or what. I don't mind the remote as much as other ppl here. At least you don't have to open that slider at the bottom like the 2108, that was a nuissance. They should have include optical output as well. All in all, it's not too bad, I just wish it wasn't so over-priced here in Canada $599 CDN!

Have this player for about 3 weeks. So far I am happy with its performances. I have used it quite a bit and have not seen any big defects in oder to whine about. It plays video lots better than my VCRs (Sharp, Panasonic), and the audio quality is equal or better than my CD player (Sony).
For DVD players regardless of manufactures, They all exhibit certain defects. I have not seen a perfect one yet. The reasons are many. DVD player performances are base on its hardware, firmware and the perfectness of the DVD disc.

For this Toshiba 2109, I give it five stars for the price ( $299 plus $30 coupon, plus 5 free DVDs, plus 13 free DVD rentals from Hollywood Video. I bought this one from SEARS) and performances.

I'm going throught the process of finding the best, resonably priced dvd player to mate with my yammy 1105. I picked up the 2109 about a month ago. I picked it up for about 275.00. Video and sound are excellent, both dvd and cd playback. As far as the coax only output, I actually prefer it, great results using a monster coax cable. I do have a couple of gripes: at low listening levels I can hear the sound of the cd spinning. At first I thought it was no big deal, however it has become very annoying. But, when i'm watching a suspensfull movie, at the edge of my seat..then I hear this wwirrrrrr....remote is poorly laid out.
For the price, virtually a bargain, but for alittle more it's worth not having that sound

Worst looking downconversion I've seen in the new players. Slooooooow loading. I give video quality a 4 on non anamorphics and a -4 on anamorphics. So many DVDs are Anamorphic now days that I feel this players quality suffers terribly because of it. Bottom line, not a player I would buy again.(Returned it for A120)

I just got the Toshiba 2109 and I must say I'm really impressed. The video is EXTREMELY sharp and the colors are right on. I've had an opportunity to test the Panasonics and the Pioneer 414. The Pans were great machines, but the all seemed to lack the overall picture quality associated with the dvd format. They just left me wanting for more. The Pioneer was an EXCELLENT machine except for the dreaded lip-sync problem that I DID encounter. Every machine I tested had great audio and performed flawlessly in DD and DTS.
I believe the Toshiba has the best combination of everything I'm looking for in a dvd deck. As with the video quality, the audio is fantastic. Mine is connected to a dd/dts decoder via the digital coaxial (the only and PREFERRED connection on the machine). The system really rocks and the sound more closely mimics the sound of a movie house than the previous set ups.

My only problem is the remote included with the player. Toshiba could have done a little better and still kept the price down. But, you can't have everything, and for the money, this player gets my highest recomendation!! $289.00 at BB

I compared this player to the Panasonic A120 and Pioneer 414.
1. On a 4:3 screen both the panasonic and pioneer and better down conversions of Anamorphic DVDs. In fact, the Toshiba's was average.

2. Sound quality, I really couldn't tell a difference.

3. Video quality on both Anamorphic DVDs was much superior on the Panasonic and Pioneer over the Toshiba.

4. Non Anamorphic DVDs on a 4:3 looked best on the Panasonic and Pioneer, The Toshiba decoding was strange, when a picture contained moving video on or over still video, the still video looked like a JPEG or graphics with a animated texture on it. Stepping away from the image seemed to help.

5. I ended up with the Panasonic because I heard the 414 had lipsync problem and I noticed some video flicker at the top of letterboxes on certain movies.

I've seen the Toshiba 3108 and that player is far better then this one in my mind. I also didn't like the slow loading times compared to the Panasonic. I am a true Toshiba fan, and think that there higher end DVD Players will be or are the best on the market, but the bottom line is this one is not. It is an good player with some good features and lacking a few things other players have.

I'm only so critical because Toshiba makes very good Home Theater Equipment, I pointed out a lot of bads, but if the Panasonic A120 was unatainable, the 3109 would be my second choice for a value player.
