Strength:

Menus, looks and ofcourse CD Quality

Weakness:

missing optical output, cannot read CDRs, quite difficult to
make it CODE FREE

Take a look at Toshiba 2109, you will feel it is quite simple but yet is a very good player.
I have given certain drawbacks with this player, which else mentioned would have been really nice.
I bought 2109 on sale in Germany without know about its potential. I was rather impressed by its surpassed output.
I feel the picture quality very good compared with Panasonic A160 and Yamakawa(quite inferior). I would not include the Yamakawa further comparison since the only advantage that Yamakawa has that it uses a DVD ROM Drive inside so can read MP3 and recorded CDs as well, and the Sound and Picture quality can be only left to live with.
I compared the CD output of 2109 with Harman/Kardon HD720( a very low end model from HK). the HD 720 is far more better. When coming to DVDs 2109 does very well compared with A160, as is the same with VCDs.
The zooming does very good in 2109 and is absolutely inferior in Yamakawa and somewhat ok in A 160.
The menus are gorgeous in 2109.
The Remote is somewhat awkward but can live with it.
Overall for a price tag of DM 1000, SD2109 is superb.

Strength:

Price, features, and most of all, sound quality.

Weakness:

As mentioned before, the dinky remote. It's tolerable once you learn it, however.

I bought the SD-1200 for $160 at Accompany.com in late February and have since been awed at how much I was missing when I watched a movie at home. I only have this player hooked up to an Onkyo pro-logic receiver, and the sound quality is amazing.

The only drawback (and this is a tiny one, believe me) is the split-second pause the player exhibits when switching layers on a disc. I've noticed it, but other people who have watched the same disc with me claim it's a figment of my imagination, so it could possibly be.

Either way, this is a fantastic player for the price. Well worth $200 or a little more. Highly suggested... I've already gotten 2 friends and my father to buy an SD-1200 based on their experience with mine, and they're just as satisfied with it as I have been.

An excellent DVD player for the money. The picture is clear and precise. The sound is decent, good bass, mids and highs. Sound Quality is preety much what you would expect for $299. It has DTS and Dolby digital coax out! I never liked toslink since many people said it is inferior to coax.
But the best part about the player is that there's no problems! I never had lip synch of all the movies I've watched so far. Very nice attractive design. It is light though, it doesn't have the feel of a solidly constructed machine.
The tray is kind of slow when it opens. I didn't like the remote since I couldn't fuction it without the lights on. It is very hard to master, the buttons are too close togeter.

There is also a zoom feature, which can be very helpful for people who have small televisions or for people who hates widescreen. You can zoom the picture up to 4 times.

Overall, It is one of the best $299 DVD players out there. Other DVD players for the same price such as the Panasonic A120 and Pionner 414 has problems the Toshiba doesn't have.

I recently picked up the 2109 at best Buy for $248 and I couldn't be happier with the value for that money. I really like the zoom feature for watching in-between 16:9 and 4:3 on a 27" set. The remote leaves a lot to be desired but in all, this is a great DVD player.

So far I'm loving this machine. I've yet to experience any of the common problems associated with entry level players (pixilation, droputs, lip synch problems). I've only had it over the weekend but it was an 8 disc marathon and no troubles. Others have posted their extreme displeasure with the remote, I personally am not that picky (read: anal) and after reviewing and shopping around most of the remotes had their share of tiny buttons. My only nit-pick so far is when using the zoom function on letter box the OSD showing the zoom level doesn't go away after a few seconds, it stays up the whole time, very distracting. I'm givin this unit an inital five thumper rating and I'll give it a long term road test and rate it again.

One word describes this unit "WWWWOOOOWWWW!!!" Can't beat it for the price.Who cares that this unit comes with a subpar remote. For the price I can
overlook it. If you are in the market for an entry level player with
high priced features look no further than Toshiba SD2109.

I bought this unit based upon price/value and reviews on this site and have been very pleased. In viewing other units on my friends' systems I think mine performs the best and was less money to boot. This thing sounds great for audio CD's too. I can't wait for a new TV with component video inputs to really let 'er rip!

accessing the features & remote

Got this one over the Sony because it was cheaper and had more features... what I didn't know is that the features were only available through the garbage remote. It doesn't have digital decoder, but my reciever takes care of that... in retrospect, I should've gone with the sony 530 cuz everything else I have is sony. I guess what sold me was the "zoom" feature... and I also saved 50 bux. I must admit, zoom is cool. Get this if you see it for under 200 bux (try ubid.com), I bought it for 244 bux and even though I got a good deal, I could've gotten it much cheaper. It also spins up a bit slow. I give it a 3 star for value for what I paid for it, but if you can get it for under 200 bucks, I'll give it a 4... it gets a 3 for overall just cuz the remote sucks and if I were to lose the remote, all I could do is turn it on, press play, stop or eject. My next DVD player will have one of those jog shuttle thingys.

optical

some people are complaining about no optical output. well if you ask any high end store or read any literature they all recommend using coaxial output for dvd anyway. so i wouldnt get to wooried about it not having an optical out.after 1 month its still 5 stars.

Just picked this unit up from Sears. Got it for $269 at one of their coupon sales. Also, I picked up a 2 year extended warranty for $35. I don't normally buy extended warranties, but considering Toshiba's warranty is 90days/1year versus the heavy use this unit will get (not to mention the occasional dropped remote).
I hooked it up to a JVC 27920 TV (S-Video) and a Sherwood 5030 receiver (pro-Logic). The unit is light, but attractive. To save money, Toshiba took away the Optical Digital out and included a remote worth about $.50. It is an absolute piece of junk, with rows of little butons. They also excluded the S-Video cable.

The picture is awesome....no artifacts, excellent color rendition and clarity. Decent instruction manual. Audio mixdown to pro-Logic is a bit compressed, but I'm told this is a characteristic that I'll have to live with until I but a DD receiver.

Overall, it is hard to beat this unit for the price. I just can't understand how it could be cheaper to design a new remote (ugh!!) versus using last year's model. Although it is a great unit, I have to take a star away for the crappy remote and the inaccurate press release.
