Strength:

Reliable, dts, enhanced black level, good build quality, not bad cd audio quality, screen saver, under a second for layer-change time, decent features and, best of all, a very good picture!

Weakness:

No CDR, a little slow to load, remote is only ok.

I bought this player for its DVD playback only, since I already had a good (Marantz CD-63SE) player for CD's and CDR's. For me the best feature of this machine is its video quality. Even in S-VHS mode to my 27" RCA PoorScan TV, which has 400 lines of resolution at the screen, the picture is subjectively sharp as a tac. Even if the included component-out is only a little sharper, it will be an excellent picture.

Moreover, the image is rock solid, the gray scale seems consistent and there are no noticeable color problems - and no artifacts(!). By now you'd think manufacturers would be able to get that last part right without a hitch - after all, it's progressive-scan video that has all the technical headaches so far, right? And interlaced video has had the benefit of standards that go all the way back to 1939, for cryin' out loud. But, at the stores, I've seen many 480i (i for interlaced) DVD players lately, most of them roughly in this price range, that show one or the other of NTSC artifacts - something I don't think there's any real technical reason for - just, apparently, so much cost cutting. But, you won't go wrong with this one, anyway.

As a videophile, I bought this player 2 years ago with upgrading my video system in mind. For example, I hope to replace my Poorscan with a 32" Princeton Graphics 16:9 HDTV monitor and get a compatible quality DVD player just as soon as viable progressive-scan players become inexpensive enough for me. I bought the Toshiba SD-2109 as an inexpensive stepping stone to use in the mean time and it has worked very well.

And last, but certainly not least, God bless America...

I bought a 2109 and I liked the extra features it had available, like the screen saver and zoom feature, but on 2 out of 5 discs I tried it had a bug which would cause it to skip chapters or freeze. On both Armageddon and Enemy of the State, it would either skip chapters or lock up. I exchanged for a second unit that had the same problem in the exact same spots, on DVD's that worked perfectly on other brands. I found myself on other movies wondering if it was supposed to be that way or it had skipped a few minutes because of the bug and decided it wasn't worth it and got a Panasonic A120 - so far it has played everything with no problems.

I got this player, 5 free movies, AND an additional 50 bucks worth of free movies on 9/20 from 800.com. I gave it a pretty good workout, and I gotta say, I love it. The enhanced black level feature makes the picture look a lot better. The component outputs are nice to have, and the zoom mode is hella cool. I have had no problems with any discs I've tried.

I have owned this player for 6 months, at which point the player stopped recognizing any disc inserted.
Combine that with the fact that the anamorphic downconversion left a whole lot to be desired (especially compared to a $199 Samsung I bought my parents), and I don't exactly have a pleasant Toshiba experience.

I owned a first-gen Toshiba 3006 which never had these problems, so maybe it's a fluke.

1 star due to 6 month failure.

Sound - good +
Remote - poor design, (it is hard to press the button even i have small hand)
Interconnect - good, only coax digital out.

I bought this one at the recommend of research and many happy buyers before me, and I can honestly say that I am very, very pleased with the quality of this player, especially at the price. Affordable, dependable, worth the $.

Well, after doing a whole lotta homework, I entered my foray into the world of DVD with the Toshiba 2109 and I couldn't be happier. I work at an electronics store here in Louisiana, and I'm pretty used to seeing how different DVD Players look and sound. And, I've got to tell you, this Toshiba is right up there with some of the pricier units. Image detail is extremely clean (I'm using S-Video) so I imagine that it's even sharper through RGB. The sound is incredibly clean and precise, as it should be....even though I haven't heard it in full Dolby Digital. And listening to CD's on this unit makes you realize just how bad some CD Players out there can sound.
For you guys still out there swingin Pro-Logic systems, making the jump to DVD will make your system sound sweeter than it ever could sound. And, for movies available in 5.1 only, the Toshiba does a nice job of downconverting it to simple Stereo Surround.

I've given the unit a nice workout and have noticed only one hitch for the days I've had it. I was playing 8MM, and as soon as the first chapter started, I tried to search backwards. Well, the unit just hung out for awhile...and I had to push stop and play again to bring it back to life. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt as just me being too hard on it...but my eyebrows definitely raised a few inches.

The Zoom feature is nice, but I only wish that the player gave a nice background onscreen while playing CD's instead of the simple gray. Regardless, these are small concerns....no big deal at all.

Also, people complain about the remote...but give it time...I learned it rather quickly and it gets to be comfortable after you're used to it.

I ordered mine from 800.com with a $50 dollar discount, plus $50 in free DVD's, plus the mail in offer just about everybody's doing for 5 more free DVD's...which brought my grand total to $249.99! Free delivery, no tax....great deal.

The system I'm using consists of:
35" Mitsubishi Console (from 92 but still more gorgeous than brand new stuff)
Yamaha RXV690 Receiver (yeah....still Pro-Logic)
Infinity SM Series Speakers
Yamaha Center
2 in ceiling speakers for surround

I recently purchased the 2109 as upgrade from my 3006. I got this unit at a very good price from the Image Video at Harrison Plaza. As usual they let me test and compare it with various available brands such as Sony, Pioneer and Philips ( of course minus the 7700 of Sony and the 3109 of Toshiba also ). Pound for pound the 2109 beat the competion in both video and audio. It lacks HDCD capability but who cares I got this unit strictly for video purposes. I'll give it a 5 star for the price to performance ratio.

Strength:

This is for SD1200.
BLOWOUT PRICE of $179 at mobshop.com

Weakness:

Remote, but it sounds like all other models have same problem

I looked at hundreds of reviews on the 3 above products and they seem like all great products. But you can't beat the price of $179 on the Toshiba SD1200 at mobshop. The best price I could find on Sony was $250, the best price on Pioneer was $212, and the second best price on Toshiba was $225. If you look under the review of Toshiba SD2109 which has over 200 reviews, you will see over 15-20 people commenting on the mobshop.com prices and no one has anything negative to say about the company. The mobshop.com also has great prices on DVDs.

Similar Products Used:

Compared to Pioneer DV525, Sony DVPS330, and several other brands that aren't near as good.

Strength:

Crystal clear audio, looks good, auto shut off & screensaver, remembers your last scene after shutting down or stopping for a while. Nice step-by-step pause. x2, x8, x30 frame advances. On screen display is nice and also allows you to select the OSD colors.

Weakness:

Skips and freezes on some movies.

I have to say that this is my first DVD palyer and I don't understand the different between a "High End" and an "Entry Level" DVD player. Maybe someone can email me and explanation. anyway, onto the review.

Player:

There are not many flaws that I can find. The audio is superb, I am currently connected to the TV (27" Sony Trinition) via S-Video and the picture is just "WOW"! I don't like that it freezes everytime I am trying to watch The Matrix. And in a couple of instances the player skips a little when changing chapters. That gets pretty aggravating but I am far past the return period for the Good Guys and it isn't serious enough for me to send to Toshiba and be without DVD for a couple months.

Remote:

This remote has great featres but watching a movie in the dark and having to pause for the phone, the kids waking up, or any other general household interruption is just a pain in the A**!!! I HATE that remote is not backlit. Aside form that, the remote has perfectly placed directional/menu buttons, it's not too big or too small and doesn't have more buttons that what are needed.

Overall I have to give it a 3 on Video playback and a 5+ for audio.
