I just purchased the Toshiba 2109 after reading many reviews. I must say that this DVD player is a great addition to my Yamaha 992, Energy Take 5, and Sony 35" monitor. The picture is crystal clear, the audio through the coaxial setup is just wonderful. I have not noticed any problems with down conversion, it was easy to setup and under $300, with 5 free DVDs is a real bargain. The remote, although limited should not be a real concern since it plays, stops and does all the basics and more importantly does not get in the way of enjoying quality picture and audio. What more do you need? Thanks to all the positive postings that led me to this terrific product.

This is an update from a previous review: I first had a problem with the DD/DTS output. No bitstream was being sent from the DVD to my receiver. I was just outside my distributors return period so I had it fixed at a Toshiba center. After two and half weeks I received it back working. Yesterday, 3 weeks after being fixed it choked on a CD, it just stopped playing it. It no longer recognized it or any dvd's, it won't load anything. The problem still occurs today. What a piece of crap!! Two faliures in 2 months of play time.

First of all, anyone who reviews products on this site that they have only demo'd in the store should drop dead!
ok, now that that's been said, I've had this unit for about two weeks now, and I love it. I bought it after doing a ton of research on the other players out there. It sounds like Toshiba has the least problems like pixellization, lip-sync, etc.

I have not had any troubles with the unit whatsoever. Picture is great. It will look WAY better once you calibrate your monitor using the AVIA test disc.
AVIA is well worth the money. the only way you can get your picture to look better is to have a technician come out and professinally calibrate your TV.

The remote isn't awesome, but I really don't think it is too bad either.

At this point, I'd say don't spend any more than $250 on a DVD player. By this time next year, you'll be able to get one for the same price that includes SDTV progressive scan component outputs (Currently $999). Connected to an SDTV ready TV like the Panasonic 32" ($1600), the picture is going to be photographic in quality!

but until that time when I can get an SDTV and a dvd with progressive scan outputs, the Toshiba 2109 will work just great.

I have had the SD-2109 from Toshiba for about 3 months now and have been buying DVDs like crazy (and renting). I honestly have to say that the picture quality and the sound are superb. The only thing that takes away from truly enjoying this unit is the remote, but you do become aclimated to rather quickly and "learn the ropes" so to speak.I would (and have) reccomend it anyone.

I just bought the SD-2109 and I love it! It plays movies and music without a problem. Zoom function works great. Picture looks very sharp, especially on a 114" diagonal 16:9 screen. On-screen menu is easy too. What I like is when you access the menu in the middle of the movie, the movie continues where it paused. Great features. The only bad thing is the remote...it sucks. The buttons are too small. Of course, the other entry-level DVD players have the same types of remotes (Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer). No audio dropouts, no lip-synch, no problem.
Overall, the player is a winner! You can't go wrong.

I've had the Toshiba 2109 for about a month now. Picked it up a Sears with a $30 discount coupon so the total before tax was $270. 6 free DVD's total with purchase so definitely a bargain.
Performance in video and audio is excellent. Remote is lame but that is little consequence. Only one concern exists and at this point I can't determine whether it is TV or DVD player related. On several discs so far, I have encountered brief moments when my TV displays the Unusuable Signal screen (which is basically a black screen with blue letters). This pops up for less than a second and has done so during bright, explosive moments during movies. Wonder if the TV is being overloaded by signal? The TV is a RCA 35" (about 4 years old). Using S-video directly to TV. This hasn't happened enough to be really a problem and from what I've read no one else has experienced this, therefore I maintain that this DVD player is probably the best deal out there.

Strength:

Good pictures quality, feature set.

Weakness:

Remote has limited range. Annoyance with On Screen Displays.

This is a great player. Especially for the money. When I got this over a year ago many of the others players could not even play all the movies out there reliably. The picture and sounds quality out of the player is great. There are more features then I need. Toshiba seems to be working hard in the DVD area and it is showing in their products.

My complains are that the remote has a limited range that it works from. My player is down lower and it seems that have to lower the remote to almost inline to get it work. Not a big deal just suprising to see on modern equipment. My other complaint is small and with the On Screen Displays. Some of the icons on the screen such as multi angle and you cannot make them disappear. Only way to make them disappear is to shut off OSD all together. Annoying since you cannot then see things like remind or fastforward rate. Just a little annoyance, something that I think can be done better.

Strength:

Picture and Sound Quality Decent

Weakness:

No Optical Out. Somewhat noisy. Pauses at random times during most DVDs.

I've about had it with this player. It started out working pretty well, but now it won't even play DVDs! It just keeps saying "Loading..." and never loads the disc.

The audio and picture quality are decent, but they're nothing to boast about. It doesn't play VCDs either.

Since mine appears to be busted, I'm going to upgrade.
