Strength:

Zoom Feature, Great Picture Quality. Component Video output. Slow Motion Forward.

Weakness:

Remote Control is rather Small.

This is a really great player for the person who is on a budget. The features are great, with a 3x Zoom in feature for those..ahem..nice parts of movies. :) Also, The black levels are further enhanced by using an option that gives deeper black colors. Great item. Picture quality is outstanding, with nary any pixelation from my player.
Get this one! It's a steal if you can get it for about $180.

Strength:

Best value for price

Weakness:

No lighted keypad on remote

I think this one takes the cake in the best value for your money category. The visual and audio quality is extraordinary. The Spatializer N-2-2™ Virtual Surround Sound was stunning. I haven't had the time to hook up the DVD player to my DTS/Digital audio receiver yet. Got the player for $199 ($299 - $100 from ValueAmerica.Com), plus the usual goodies from NetFlix.Com and Blockbuster. IMHO, you can't go wrong with this one.

James Taylor's review says - no good - doesn't play cdr's & vcds.

That's not completely accurate.

1) This is good
2) it doesn't play cdr's but most player's don't
3) it doesn't play vcd's - but it's a dvd player (and trust me, the quality of vcd's is not a selling point!)

This player is much better than a 1 star. James, next time give an honest review (and stick to the category (dvd). This player retails for less than $299 and can be had for much less. For the price, it is feature complete. If you want/need more feature (namely vcd) buy the 3109. If you need cdr playback, save money and buy a better dedicated cd player, as very few dvd players play cdr's.

Great Player! for the price, 5 stars

Strength:

Great Picture

Weakness:

Does not Play CD-R; Macrovision;

After reading all the reviews here, I decided to ge this DVD player. Picked it up at Onale for 229+27 s/h. Better than any local stores that is for sure. I am new to this technology, but I find that the clarity of the picture to be amazing! I like the ZOOM feature and I love being able to review scenes easly and quickly using the memory buttons and the chapter locator buttons.

So far, I am impressed and will definitely be getting a DD/DTS receiver in the net month, in order to hear the audio effects, I have thus far been missing.

As for audio CD's it plays them very nicely and the sound output seems to be more powerful thatn my 10 year old sony 5-cd changer.

For value , I give it a 5
For quality, I give it a 4.3, round down to 4.0
I mean a 5 has to be for the best right? I am sure there are better players out there but I am more than satisifed with this one so far.

I am owning my SD-2109 Toshiba DVD player for more than a month and I am happy with it. May be I am not a keen observer but I did not see anything like annoying horizantal lines while playing any movies. I use an external DD/DTS receiver for the audio and the quality is too good. It is extreme good for the price I paid at the Best buy. In case of any problems found later, I will update this review.

I just got my 2109 and the first thing I watched for are the "bugs" orcomplaints other people have here. Here are my results.

COMPLAINT: The remote is poor.
MY RESULT: I rather like it. It's simple but effective. It could have larger
buttons.

COMPLAINT: The downconversion is horrible!
MY RESULT: I watched 2 widescreen dvds and the picture was SUPERB.
I am very happy with the widescreen.

COMPLAINT: The front of the unit is cheap looking.
MY RESULT: Maybe it's not titanium or whatever, but the display is beautiful and the buttons are functional and not too bad looking. It looks a lot nicer than most of my HT Components.

Final Analysis: I LOVE my 2109. If I ever encounter problems, I'll submit a revised review. May it never be neccesary.

Just purchased the 2109 from Sears. I love it. They have a promotion - 299 less $30 coupon + 5 free DVD's and 15 free Hollywood Video rentals.
Great Deal!!!

I originally gave this product a good review. However, I have since sold the machine in lieu of a Sony DVP-550D. The Toshiba was a sleek looking player and the sound quality was very good. BUT, the remote stinks and the BIGGER problem (which prompted me to sell) is that on a normal 4:3 TV, the downconversion was TERRIBLE. HORRIBLE. Wavy, distracting lines were everywhere! I've played several anamorphic discs on my Sony and it has NONE of that! Best example: in Lethal Weapon 4 after the cool car chase where they drive THROUGH the building and come out the other end... well, the Mercedes they're chasing gets hit by the semi-truck. The camera then pans over the Mercedes wreckage and on the 2109, it looked as if the car were made of the liquid metal from T2-it was flowing everywhere! The Sony displays that Mercedes image rock solid with NO wavy lines. For people that don't notice downconversion problems like this, I envy you. But once I noticed it a few weeks ago, I see it EVERYWHERE. So it is unfortunate that I now give this player 3 stars as in my opinion, it pales in comparison to the Sony.

This was my first DVD player and I am glad I chose the right one! I was waiting for my local retailer to get them in before the March 31st FREE DVD offer expired, but had to resort to ordering from E-Town ($299 + $20 two day shipping). Best move I have made in a long time!
I received it 2 days later as promised, packaged inside another shipping carton (way to go E-Town). First impression was how light it was. A good friend of mine owns a Sony 300, which I must say is just as light. I got the immediate impression before even hooking it up that this was going to be a hyped up piece of junk. Boy was I surprised! It's hooked up to a Proscan 36" via Monster Silver Series 500 S-video cable. What a picture! If you have the option of hooking up via S-video DO IT! The picture quality increased dramatically, especially with on-screen text menus. I must admit that the remote is the worst thing I have ever seen! Who ever designed it must have been out all night drinking the night before the blueprints where laid out because this thing is a piece of crap. Hopefully that won't be a problem for long as I'm looking for a good universal remote for my whole system.

According to Toshiba, the $100 reduction in price was possible because of the removal of the optical connection. I don't need it, and you probably don't either. In any case, this is an awesome player. And yes, music CD's sound fantastic too....

I have to give it 4.5 stars - taking .5 away for a less than adequate remote.
