Strength:

great video and audio quality

Weakness:

strange behaviour on several DVD menus, user-unfriendly remote

I've used this DVD player for over 3 years now and I am very satisfied with its performance. Recently however I've noticed some strange things on several DVDs. On my Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon DVD, the menu arrow (green stamp) disappears after some navigation and does not return. This has happened with a few other DVDs as well.

Strength:

great picture, excellent sound , minimum of useless features

Weakness:

flimsy tray, ordinary remote, no display off

I bought this player on the strength of the rave reviews it was getting in the English and Australian audio visual magazines at the time (November- December 1999). I can only reinforce those raves.

DVD was still relatively new in Australia at that point and alleged lip-sync problems on the Pioneer steered me towards this player. I've had no problems to date with that problem or experienced any other major problem. Its played every DVD I ever tried, and picture quality is superb.

I have since auditioned a Marantz DV18 which is a later generation player and a lot dearer, but perceived no significant difference in picture quality. Recently I AB'd the Toshiba's music replay against my Onkyo multi cd player which I've been happy with for years, and couldn't notice any sonic difference. Nonetheless I tend to use the DVD player only for movies and movie sound is sensational.

For the price and somewhere well beyond, its a ripper of a machine. They should have put a metal plate in the bottom to increase weight and then could've charged thrice the price(yes, I'm a cynic)and still sold bucketloads, its that good.

Strength:

VERY DETAILED IN MUSIC AND MOVIES. DTS IS AWESOME

Weakness:

YOU COULD NOT FIND ONE IF YOU TRIED

I SAW THIS ON E BAY FOR AN INCREDIBLE $700.00 DOLLARS AND BOUGHT IT IN 1 HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND. GOT IT IN 2 DAYS , AND HOOKED IT UP AND ALL I CAN SAY IS PREAMPS CAN ONLY GET SO GOOD, AND YOU CANNOT GET BETTER THEN THIS. I TESTED IT BY LISTENING TO THE DVD, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA ZOOM, IN DTS I THOUGHT I WAS AT THE CONCERT. EVERY LITTLE DETAIL WAS BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE WITH THE MARANTZ AV 9000. AND JURRASIC PARK 3 WAS BETTER THEN IN THE MOVIE THEATER, MAYBE THEY SHOULD GET A MARANTZ? ONE THING THAT REALLY STOOD OUT WAS THE REAR EFFECTS, IT ACTUALLY SCARED ME WHEN THE STEALTH PLANE FLEW OVERHEAD IN THE DVD, BROKEN ARROW. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PRE AMPLIFIER, DO NOT BUY TILL YOU CHECK THIS ONE OUT. I HAVE NEVER LEFT A REVIEW ON ANYTHING BEFORE, BUT FELT COMPELLED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW SIMPLY AMAZING THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IS. WAYDE H

Strength:

Longevity!! This has been well worth the money.

Weakness:

Limited amount of options on the remote.

I have two DVD players, and this is the best one (so far), this has been through numerous bumps and drops and still works like it did out of the box. Sure it is a little noisy, but when you have it cranking through the home stereo you have a tendency not to hear the movement of the head (or anything else for that matter). I wish other units could be built to these standards.

Strength:

ColorStream technology & Simple interface menus

Weakness:

Non-progressive scan player

An excellent value, the 2109 has performed well. In fact, this unit has done so well in my home theater that I have decided to put off the progressive scan DVD player until 720p is more widely available! The 480i 2109 has been a tremendous value, displaying top-notch color and picture resolution when used in conjunction with the ColorStream technology. I personally calibrated the monitor we use with the Avia DVD and it helped the picture considerably. This player can be had for under $100 (used) and is worth every penny.

Strength:

Excellent picture and audio. No blockiness or pixelization, the better the dvd, the better the picture

Weakness:

no complaints

I've used this unit for over 2 years and it has provided many hours of viewing enjoyment. A solid, dependable and flashy performer with no real quirks. Still ranks high in picture quality even compared to the newest models out there and I still haven't been able to use the component output as my Panasonic GAOO doesn't accept them.

I just bought the new 2109 DVD player. It is awesome. I went to 4 high end dealers who all use the new 2109 as their demo for dvd. Their is nothing else that even comes close. It makes my highly rated panasonic vcr seem well- like a vcr! Even in prologic I am hearing sounds out of movies like Waterworld that I never heard before. Ac3 and Dts is that much better yet. Of couse the picture is outstanding. I am connecting video with super vhs plug as my TV doesnt have the component jacks. My cd's sound just as good as my Sony es cd player. The Sony 7700 dvd costs a grand and isnt any better. The only drawback is the remote isnt backlit but i dont use it anyway as i use my mutltibrand remote. Panasonic is due out with the 320 to replace the 310 very soon so I cant comment on that one. But for under 300 bucks why buy anything else.

I rented Snake Eyes tonight. 2 times in the movie my picture started jumping around. 1 time it stopped and froze. This is the 6th dvd I have rented and the first time I have had any trouble with the 2109. I noticed the dvd had a lot of finger smudges but wasnt scratched. Is this the video fallout people tak about with the Toshiba. It also doesnt play dirty cd's that my Sony ES cd player will play with no problem. Only 1 star tonight. But 5 stars every other movie.

Just set this unit up earlier in the week. I have had any problems with it yet. The picture and the sound are great! I bought it from onecall.com and the sent it over via 3 day fedex. Anyone looking to purchase a DVD player w/DTS under $300, take a long look at this unit.
