Strength:

4x zoom; DD/DTS capable; dimming panel; sharp picture!;

Weakness:

(small weaknesses): remote; no optical connection-only coax (not that necessary)

First, I would like to correct Joe from Florida who says (below) that "annoying confirmation beep" cannot be removed. Actually if you go into the setup menu, you will see that you can easily remove it!

Pros:
This is an EXCELLENT player. The picture is sharp and dual layer discs play without skipping a beat. And the sound is awesome.

The panel can dim so that you don't have to see the counter...NEAT! It has 2 levels of dimming.

And with the 4x zoom, you can reduce the black bars without having to crop too much on the sides. Don't hit the zoom button more than once since it causes the picture to be less sharp at higher zoom levels.

Cons:
The remote is small, however after looking at other brands, their remotes weren't that much better. (I'm using my universal remote from my Sony 27" TV to operate the DVD)

This player doesn't have a digital optical output (to the receiver) but does have the digital coaxial output. Most receivers with DD/DTS decoders have both connections, so this isn't a big deal.

I'm using a S-VIDEO connection but if you have a newer TV with component video, this DVD player has one!

In all, For your first DVD player this is an ideal machine!

***SD1600 review*** It's an original toshiba !! ZOOM is great. Sound Is great ! awesome Language selection.
Logic features.Parental Lock.PCM

Weakness:

no fiber. remote should have the batteries in your palm area not in the head. Its is easy to drop. lighted remote would be good.

In my personnal opinion this was a great buy.

I had to replace a defective CD player (my wifes) and i persuaded her in to a DVD/CD player .

DVD player is connected to an AIWA AXR-005 A/V tuner (svhs)
Dolby Surrond is first generation (added a spatializer home buit from a review in popular electronics)Stereo/Surround separation and position is great (head turner on sound effects)

Tv is an RCA 28" svhs input(flat screen with true blackness) with X-Stereo enabaled to produce center channel effects. (center output from spatializer to TV audio input.

Strength:

Great Picture, Great Sound, Great Manual

Weakness:

Remote

After playing about 7 DVDs and enjoying the great picture and sound, approximately 2 or 3 minutes into the 8th movie(Not all in a row, different days), the picture froze on the screen and none of the buttons on the remote would work as well as any of the front panel buttons. I had to unplug the unit and let it sit awhile, before I could get the rented DVD out of the player. This is happening ALL THE TIME NOW, except all it does now is blink "LOADING" and frezzes the remote and front panel buttons. If I put in an audio CD, I get "DISK ERROR" message.

It shouldn't have to go into the shop after only 2 weeks.

Strength:

video, audio, and price

Weakness:

I would like more fuctions on the front panel

I bought this dvd player in febuary and have watched about 60 dvd's in the last 6 months the picture has remaind flawless with top notch dvd's the only hang up was on the a rental of three kings on the second play it froze up, but has not done it sense. audio is great the zoom feature is nice and for the remote I actually dont mind it I am tired of huge remotes and I usually just hit play and watch the movie and maybe pause every once in awhile so its fine for me, the only down fall of this machine for me was the front panel it looks fine I just wish it had more features, I have children and loose remotes often and with out the remote there is not much you can do besides the basic fuctions but i have not lost the remote yet so i will still give this machine the full rating,I would recomend this to people looking for their first player and for a second unit, for the price you cant do any better than the toshiba sd-1200

Strength:

Cheap. Sturdy. DD *and* DTS. Very lightweight.

Weakness:

Remote needs better design. Front panel could use rearranging. RF output would have been nice.

I originally intended to purchase the Toshiba 2109 but then I heard this newer model was coming out and bought this instead (plus PointClick + Mobshop = virtually free; can't beat that). Looking back, I kinda wished I had known about the 2200 since it has dual disc bays (I have lots of multidisc box sets and stuff like that) but I was too tempted to get a DVD Player. Anyway...

This really is a good entry model as many have stated. It's lighter than my Sony VCR (one of the good ones too) so I was surprised it worked so well. It's got all the basic stuff you'd expected from a DVD Player plus it's got other neat stuff like 3 levels of zoom, Dolby Digital, and DTS.

Bad stuff: I never really gave much thought to the remote controls and I thought that people writing reviews were just picky, but no, this really is a crappy remote. It's not back lit so you can't see the buttons if it's dark. Also, the buttons aren't designed so at least you can feel them in the dark. That would have been a good alternative. Or even putting more spacing for the buttons. I don't know how many times I've had to pause, turn on the lights, and try to figure out where the zoom button or the audio button (for subtitles... I'm an anime fan) was. Also, the number pad isn't really designed with anything in mind. It goes from 1-4, 5-8, 9-10+ which really doesn't make any sense. They should have did it like a phone number pad or calculator since everyone is used to that.

Minor annoyance: I don't have a HDTV or a good TV yet and my TV requires the old RF inputs. I had to hook up my Sony VCR as a bypass so I could watch stuff initally. This is bad cuz many discs have Macrovision piracy protection which makes the pictures fade and come back (luckily many anime titles don't have Macrovision). If you have an old TV, be forewarned... you WILL need to purchase a RF modulator so you don't have to bypass with your VCR. You can grab one at Radio Shack for $30.

Despite these two annoyances, I'd probably buy this DVD Player again (unless I had more $$$; then I'd go with a progressive scan DVD and/or something with a disc changer).

Strength:

Pretty good overall, except for weaknesses below

Weakness:

Small remote; had a trouble with a few DVDs

Bought this unit as a replacement for the Panasonic A110, which died on me (don't buy Panasonics--see Panasonic A110 and A310 reviews for details).

Bought this player after reading the reviews on this site. It was generally a good player, except that it had problems with certain DVDs. As mentioned by others below, it couldn't play the multi-angled pseudopod scene in The Abyss, and it didn't decode Chapter 5 of Alien very well at all--there are a lot of parallel curved lines in that scene which seem to ripple when the camera pans. Also, in Mansfield Park, the player seems to get stuck for about a second during one of the scene transitions (perhaps it was the layer change, but it wasn't just a slight pause--the player seemed to repeat a brief segment several times).

I returned it to Tweeter (they have a 30-day money back guarantee) and got the Sony DVP-S360. It was able to play all of the DVDs mentioned above with no problems.

About the remote--when I first got the Toshiba player, I thought the remote was fine because it was pretty similar to the Panasonic remote, which I had gotten used to. After I got the Sony player, though, I realized why everyone complains about the Toshiba remote. The Sony remote is much better designed (different button sizes, more logical placement), plus it has volume buttons which can control my receiver.

It's not a bad machine, but I like the Sony better.

Strength:

Excellent picture,works error free,price

Weakness:

remote,no optical connection

A great player for 200$, you notice the high resolution (over 540 lines) immediately, works with no stalls which use to happen a lot with the Samsung due to overheat, the remote is the real down side it is made for children the buttons are so small and it is nearly impossible to control in a dark room, but for this price if something has to be bad, let it be the remote

Strength:

Zoom, few, if any glitches when playing DVDs

Weakness:

Remote

Without reviewing what others have said a lot, it's a good DVD player. After playing more than 40 DVDs, have had only two problems:

i) accessing cast info for anyone other than Bogart in Maltese Falcon; and

ii) freezing on ONE occasion, remedied by stopping and playing again, never to happen again.

In fact, my DVD player fared w/o glitch when playing a South Park DVD, whereas a friend who got a great deal on a more pricy Sony DVD player couldn't see some of the scenes (just froze).

Overall, I'd recommend to all. After the $25 Mobshop.com Visa Rewards coupon (found at www.amazing-bargains.com), it was cheaper than my final mobshop price of $189.

Remote: okay for small - medium sized hands, but probably too small to be comfortable for people with large hands.

Anybody with the same problems with the Maltese Falcon?

Stuart

This one croaked in the 5th month. They were going to
charge me $65 just to open it. The parts were going to be free but labor was extra. It'a a paper weight now. Maybe
I can open it up and look at it. Will never buy a toshiba again.

Strength:

Low price, good set of features

Weakness:

no optical output, slow indexing between sections

Been using my 1200 since May. I've played over 30+
movies (my own + rented) and only had one problem
with 1 movie freezing - but I took out the disk and
it was scratched & had some dirt on it, so I cleaned
off the dirt/smudge and it ran fine...

Therefore, 7 months and flawless performance.
Great entry level DVD player, although it doesnt
have optical output.....

I would recommend the toshiba to anyone looking for
a good deal.
