Strength:

Low cost, great value.

Weakness:

None at its price.

A great low-cost product! I connect it to a Panasonic TV (CT-27D10) using a GE component video cable that I bought from Target for $19.99. The picture quality is awesome.

Strength:

Great picture, passes Dolby Digital, good resolution - 540

Weakness:

Remote

It was not hard choosing between the Toshiba 1200 and the 2200 DVD players. I went with the 1200. For around 75.00 more the 2200 gives you dual disk tray, Dobly Digital, and a larger remote. If you own a Dolby digital receiver or your surround reveiver is not Dolby digital "ready" (which very few actually are), then save yourself the money and go with the 1200. Why pay additional money for an extra tray and a larger but equally cumbersome remote? The resolution and video DAC are identical. I have this unit hooked up to a Toshiba projection tv and the picture is awsome. I am currently using a Monster M1000 silver series S-Video cable and did notice a big difference compared to the composite outputs. Picture is much clearer and the color is truer. Have not tried the colorstream (component) outputs yet(not in a hurry to spend 120.00 on the cable considering this unit does not have progressive scanning). The audio is ten times clearer on my surround system compared to VCR tapes. I plan on going to Dolby Digital, and the pass through feature on this unit ensures compatibility. Music CDs sound good too, and I was happy to eliminate my old cd player from my stand. I do not notice any noise from the motor at all, but then again I do sit at least 10' away from the unit. The zoom feature is cool and so is the ability to dim or completely shut off the display. They should also give you the option to turn off the red power light (minor annoyance in the dark). I agree with others on the remote. I do not understand why toshiba did not back-light the remote, especially with the buttons being so small. I really like Toshiba products, but they kill me with the lack of thought put into detail. Did they design this for 10 year old fingers? Definately going to buy a back-lit universal remote for this unit. These complaints are minor when you look at other DVD players in this price range. Overall this is a execellent DVD player that beats many other players that cost more. I have to give it 5 stars for value and 4 stars overall (remote thing).

Strength:

Price, picture, sound

Weakness:

Nothing, at the moment

Bought this for $468 Singapore dollars - and I must say it was without no regrets. Multi-region, so I had no problems playing region 1 and 2 DVD. Picture is crisp and sharp, even via composite connection (using Audio Technica 75 ohm video cable). And it sounds great as a CD player. Mine is SD-1200A, so it has both optical output as well as coaxial. I'm using the optical out to connect to my Mini Disc player to make great recording.

Overall verdict: recommended!

Reliability, picture quality, dts & dd, zoom, price

Weakness:

none so far

After gone through 2! RCA players in a year, I decided to upgrade from that junk. After doing some research, I decided on the Toshiba SD-1200. Price and the great comments I've read were the 2 factors. I had trouble with a few BOND dvds on my RCA player, but none on this baby. Plays great. I also have a 2 year Extended Service plan, if there are any problems.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound

Weakness:

remote hard to use

First DVD player. Wanted value priced performance and went by what a lot of people on this board are saying. Almost bought a Sony 360 but this seems like a better fit for me. I have a Sony TV and wanted a sharp picture. Sony a little softer, I think. ALso, I like the zoom mode (which Sony does not have). Zoom 1 is good for letterbox DVDs which are just too small on my 27" TV. I'll watch a pure 16:9 widescreen when I have the 55" model in place!

Excellent picture and sound. Purchased as a combo with a Yamaha 596 receiver at Good Guys for $650. Now available retail (not web) for $200.

Strength:

Great picture and sound. Inexpensive. Plays everything I've tried flawlessly

Weakness:

Yes, the remote isn't great but why aren't you people using universal remotes anyway?

Just got this a couple of weeks ago from Ubid.com for $164.00+shipping. I've had a Toshiba SD-2008 for about 1.5 years and it has operated flawlessly. This one adds better setup menus and VCD capability. Also, the zoom feature works better on this unit as it was 3 zoom modes. The 2008 only had one zoom mode and it really wasn't useful for use while watching a movie. I've decided that Toshiba is about the only entry-level DVD player I would consider. They seem to be rock-solid.

Strength:

Cheap :)

Weakness:

Still in the mail :)

I actually haven't used it yet, it's in the mail.

After reading tons of reviews, I'm sure I'll love it. I purchased it for $159, and a $25 rebate, so $135 .. and no shipping too! Got it at mobshop.com, the more people buy, the cheaper it gets. It seems it now only goes down to $204, but that is still good, and I would still check incase they let it go to $159 again.

I just like to note that this unid DOES play CD-Rs. At least some of them :)

I was looking specifically for CD-R/CD-RW capable player, so I tested them in retail stores. I found this player has no problem reading CD-RW, and I assumed it will play CD-Rs too. So I was surprised when it failed to recognize CD-R when I inserted it for the first time.

After some testing I've got following results:
4) No problem whatsoever with Sony CD-RWs. Rock solid. I didn't test other brands though.
1) It needs literally to warm up for a few minutes in order to play CD-Rs. In most cases, it will not play CD-R right after you turn it on.
2) After the player is warm, it has virtually no problem with Acer CD-Rs. One time out of ten it could fail on the firt attempt, but after you reinsert the CD-R the player loads it and then has no problem playng.
3) It never plays Sony CD-Rs. No way.

Bottom line -- it's not so bad. It doesn't look very reliable with CD-Rs and it's impossible to predict whether things will get better or worse over time. But even if it lost the ability to play CD-Rs, you can always make a CD-RW copy :)

Strength:

A reliable unit that plays discs flawlessly. Very good picture. A great value for the money I paid.

Weakness:

Low powered remote.

This is a great unit that has reliably played the 30 or 40 discs we've watched in it. We frequently rent DVDs and even the discs that seem pretty scratched up have played smoothly in our unit. We have friends with more expensive DVD players that believe skipping jerky discs are a normal occurrence. The same discs have played wonderfully in our machine.

While I would agree that the remote is the weakest part of the unit, I don't find it as bad as many people here do. I've pretty well memorized the button locations and don't have problems using it in the dark. The remote does seem under-powered. If I'm not pointing it exactly at the unit, it doesn't always work. My Toshiba television remotes are much more forgiving. The remote is the only reason I gave this unit a four-star overall rating rather than a five.

The remote is really a just a small inconvenience. The player itself is fantastic. I highly recommend it.

I posted a review on 06/19/00 saying that I bought two
different copies of The Blues Brothers DVD; and that neither would be recognized by my Toshiba SD1200.

I just assumed that my player was allergic to the BB DVD. Time passed, and I scoured the 'net to find another instance of incompatibility between the BB DVD and the SD1200, but found nada, zip, zero.

So, I waited a month, and the place I buy discs refreshed their stock. I figured, what the hell, I'll give the Blues Brothers one more try. And, wouldn't you know, the disc plays perfectly! I'm one happy camper. The Blues Brothers is one of my favorite movies, and it would
have totally sucked if I couldn't enjoy it on DVD.

So the lesson is:
It's quite possible that an entire batch of DVDs may be defective . .

So, to revise my review: (from 4*'s overall to 5*'s)

I am completely satisfied with my SD1200. I've now had it for just about 3 months, and have a collection of 17 discs. I've played many of the discs that cause havoc on other "more expensive" players (The Abyss, The Matrix, ID4) and all have played, looked, and sounded excellent. The is one of the best players on the market (at any price), and is easily the best value available!!
