Strength:

Great Picture, easy set-up, cheap. Great entry level player.

Weakness:

The worst remote ever. REW and FF scan not very accurate. Will not play CD-R

I love DVD!! I do not think that there is a better player for the price. I would recommend this one. Has never failed to play a movie. The remote is a joke. Buttons are to small for my fat fingers. Sound is great. I only have dolby surround. Sounds more defined than dolby surround in VHS. The only thing that bugs is when you scan back or forward at some speed an usually it ends up playing somewhere else than the frame you see when you hit the play button. However, these are small complaints compared to the price I paid. I have heard horror stories about other cheap players. This one rocks!!

Good Value,Zoom Feature

Weakness:

Remote

Bought this unit on after reading reviews on this board and referal of good price of where to buy (Mercata.com). Very pleased with it's ease of use and performance. My one problem I overcame due to ignorance was the Zoom feature. I don't particularly care for the wide screen format but when I tried the Zoom feature the picture was too large and fuzzy. I then corrected this by going into setup and setting the screen to the 16.3 wide screen format. This corrected the problem and I'm very pleased with the results.
As for the remote it's terrible as many others have mentioned. I solved this at a very reasonable cost. After researching this site on universal remotes I purchased two Sony RM-VL900 units. I paid 87.43 for both including shipping and no tax from criticalpath.com. The remote is everything I needed. Having 5 remotes for my home theatre setup was annoying to say the least. This is the only remote I use to control all my components. Whats great about it is that can learn other remotes as well as the ability to program macros to certain keys. With merely touching one button I am able to power on/off 5 components at once, as well as controlling most features of all units.
It sometimes is diffecult to learn a function but in time everything works. The keys are large and light up when pressed so you know what component you are controlling.

Back to the 1200, I was a bit disappointed that it was unable to play CDR from CD's I burnt on my computer rewriteable, but I knew this prior to purchase. I then bought a Go Video DVR 5000 which is a combo DVD/VCR unit.
This unit plays Mpeg files and does play my CD's that I burnt in. It also has a copy feature which is supposed to copy a DVD to VCR Tape with one touch of a button. The only problem is everyone I tried failed due to copywright codes on the DVD. I still like this unit since it does consolidate 2 units into 1 and the quality is good, and also has the Zoom feature. It is fairly new and somewhat hard to locate. I bought this unit from dynadirect.com for 347.00 including shipping and no tax. The service was superb, I ordered the unit on Saturday (closed) and paid 5.75 for 3 day ground shipping. The order was processed Monday and on Tuesday the unit was delivered by UPS, like getting next day service at 3 day pricing.
Should anyone have any questions on the Sony remote or Go Video player feel free to email me.

Strength:

Ease of use, reliable, zoom, 3 FF speeds

Weakness:

Small remote

This is my first DVD player, and I love it! I've had no
problems with it, except the occasional scratched disc
from Blockbuster. I paid $250 for it at Fry's, but that
was way back in April. You can get the newer model SD1600
cheaper than that now. But if you're looking for an entry
level DVD player and find the SD1200 for really cheap,
don't be afraid to buy it!

Strength:

Solid build, reliability, great audio/video quality - for the money.

Weakness:

Remote, CD-R

It looks like the reviews are pretty mixed on this DVD player. I will tell you that I have had no problems with this unit and have played 50+ DVDs. I recently gave one to my daughter for her birthday and she has had no trouble with it. My Dentist has four of them in his office and plays dental procedure DVDs all day long, six days a week and has had no problems. I tried out Sony DVD players and I could not tell the difference between the Toshiba and the Sony during csual viewing. To me, the letterbox artifacts looked very similar. The Samsung DVD player I gave my son last Christmas has been to the shop twice and does not play all DVDs. I am keeping my fingers crossed; however, I have had Toshiba TVs and VCRs for many years and have not had to have them repaired yet. I agree that the remote is a cruel joke.

i received it as a gift and i am dlad i did not pay for it.i know thing break but mine like many other listed in reviews went out at 6 months. yes it play more than 60 movie both rented and new perfectly. Then a couple of movies froze these were movies that i owned and had played great. from then it was down hill. I as suggested in a review below tried to contact some of the happy reviewers never got a response from them. I was also given a warranty from BB. it took them 12 day to get back to me. 6 weeks later it went down again and is now back in the shop. I would guess BB will give me a replacement since it has 2 more yrs left on warranty. I seen this sold for less than $180.00 so if you want to gamble go for it when it work it works great. but don't say you were not warned !!! it hard to give a good score when it spends that much being repaired.

Strength:

Good construction and reliability. Fine quality playback with very few artifacts. Very clean digital audio pass through.

Weakness:

Small, tightly packed buttons on the remote.

First off, I would just like to say that I work in electronics sales, but that I purchased my unit almost a full year before I started selling these kind of things. Since I am around DVD players all the time, not only do I get to use them a lot, but I also get to hear a lot of buyer feedback on the products. Knowing what I know now, e.g. the pro's and con's of various features and a broad range of customer input, I still find myself recomending the SD 1200 (and it's new equivelant the SD 1600) to just about every person looking for a well priced entry level DVD player.

Certainly, the remote could use some help, but anyone familiar with Toshiba's entry level audio and video products has seen this remote about a million times before. Because of that, I never really had much of a problem with it. I would at this point like to note that I have very large hands, and that as a result of doing a favor for a customer now use a remote that is printed in Canotnese (long story). I think if a guy with pudgy fingers can use a remote printed in a language he can't read, entirely by memory and pictograms, it can't really be all that bad.

I would also like to point out, that because I have a lot of time to fool around with various DVD players, that very few of them successfully play any form of burned CD. It seems to be a limitation that just has to be expected of most DVD players.
