Strength:

great audio, video and price.

Weakness:

none so far.

overall, it's a great bang for your buck. what you get for the price is quality video and audio. i've hooked it up to a 27" with s-video cable and it's fantastic. also, it's currently hooked up to a Yamaha ProLogic receiver for the matching audio quality.

small buttons on remote can be countered by memorizing the essential buttons, which is similar in nature to feeling your way around a typewriter.

a great starter for building a home theatre.

Strength:

Great picture, great sound for DVD's and CD's, color stream and s-video make it remarkable

Weakness:

no dolby digital decoder

For the price you are getting on of the best DVD players out. Toshiba houses the competion and the SD-1200 is no exeption. I bought this at Vanns.com for 225$ and it was worth every cent. The CD's that are played on it have no humming or buzzing, crystal clear soun. The dimmer makes the on-screen display easy to read at night. I highly reccomend this DVD player to everyone

Strength:

Component outputs, picture quality, easy to use

Weakness:

can't play cd-rs

This is my first dvd player, aside from a computer drive, and it's pretty good. The first thing I have to say is that it's really easy to use. The menus are easy to setup. Can't compare it to other players, but I think the picture quality is pretty good. I didn't need any surround decoders since I already have a receiver so I say that the audio is fine. It works fine for me, especially since I got it for $160.

Strength:

Excellet playback of dvds, nice menu system

Weakness:

Both units i had occasionally emitted a loud and quite audible "thump" through the speakers while navigating the menus

Two words:excellent player. The player has been virtually flawless playing 99% of all movies without and sort of problems. However, I should mention one problem that i have had on both SD1200 units i have had. I have a Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500 Dolby Digital setup and i have the dvd player connected via digital coax. Often, when navigating a menu and selecting things(very prevailent on the abyss and other fox titles) when switching audio tracks in the menu for the disc, a loud "thump" is emitted through my speakers. The sharp player i had did not do this so i know it is not my reciever. However, two SD1200 players have done this so I don't know what is going on. Also, this player cannot play the Pseudo pod multi angle sequence on the second disc of the abyss. If it wasn't for the thump problem i'm havingm this unit would be perfect, but because of it I can't give it 5 out of 5. In terms of value though, it was only 184 dollars shipped from Mercata. Overall a great unit if you don't have the thump problem like i do.

Strength:

Excellent picture/audio quality

Weakness:

Voice not loud enough on 2 channel audio mode

The toshiba 1200 is similar to the 2109 which I also own. I have had no problems whatsoever with playing every DVD that I've tried(around 60). The picture and sound are excellent. Got it real cheap from Mercata and am happy with the purchase.

Strength:

good price, component hookups

Weakness:

remote

This is my 1st DVD player & I'm very happy with this unit.

I was looking around at various DVD's but decided on this one for the following reasons:

- made in Japan (IMO - better build quality)
- component hookups (my TV has em)
- of course price
- zoom feature*

*this was a biggy for me as I'm not crazy about the "letter boxed" or "wide screen" formats. This feature allows you to zoom in and make the picture fill your TV screen.

(the only down side here is that you lose some of the left & right border and depending on the amount of zoom you select you could lose some sharpness)

All in all I believe an excellent unit for the price.

Strength:

Great sound, good picture

Weakness:

Noise through speakers when unit is Idle. No CD-R support

The DD & DTS sound from this system is great. I have a Yamaha with Polk Audio speakers and the sound is incredible. I just watched Three Kings, both on VHS and DVD - what a difference.

As for the remote, for all of you that have a Palm Pilot, you can buy a program called Omniview that will allow you to program your Palm Pilot with any remote device--it's self learning. I use my Palm for all of my household devices that are remote controlled. I now only have to carry one remote (my Palm). It works great.

I am using a Digital Coax connection for Audio, and do get some hissing noises occasionally when searching through different menus; it's not very loud, but it's there.

It would be great if this unit could play CD-Rs.

Strength:

Quality sound and picture at a good price.

Weakness:

The remote is poorly designed, with small buttons and an awkward layout.

I recently purchased my SD1200 after much recommendation by others, and I have been pleased with my decision ever since. Toshiba has put out a fine quality entry level DVD player. It has played every disc flawlessly, even those which are scratched rental discs. There are even some nice extras, like an fl dimmer which allows you to dim or turn off the display while you are watching a movie. There is a power button on the remote. The A-B repeat for looping any segement of the disc is also a nice feature. The only downfall of the machine is the remote. The buttons are too small and the layout could have been better. Overall it is a fine machine for anyone looking to take the plunge into the world of DVD.

Strength:

Good Inexpensive basic unit. Zoom, DTS compatible

Weakness:

REMOTE! REMOTE! REMOTE!

Toshiba has been making good quality electronics at very reasonable prices and this is no exception. I do like Zoom feature, wish others had it as basic feature, after all, this is a DVD player and should be able to use what DVD offers. I chose this model over Sony because of Zoom only. Great picture and sound quality. Have had some lip sync problems after using FF or Rewind but stoping and starting again or rewind again and it disapears.
As for the remote, It STINKS. Its WAY too small and buttons too close to use. I am constantly hitting multiple buttons. I have to turn lights on and aim my fingernail to hit the right button. Often hitting the wrong one anyway and changing function on TV & NOT DVD player!! I guess its a similar freg seeing that TV is a Toshiba. I can get dizzy trying to use remote. I miss the Sony remote that I can use in the dark from memory and feel.
I give it thums up for player but TWO thums Down fro remote. If you can live w/o Zoom go for Sony. If not Tosh will fit the bill but must have skinny little pencil point fingers.

Strength:

simple, hits the feature set sweet spot

Weakness:

inferior build quality, loud motor

This player has all the features important for integration in a well-heeled home theater system, but the build quality is inferior and the unit is poorly designed.

First, the good stuff
It has ColorStream component outputs (Y P/Cb P/Cr) which is just marketing gibberish for component 480i. This signal is suitable for your D-TV, fancy projection tv, or scaler/doubler. Note that "component" doesn't imply progressive and that this dvd player doesn't do line doubling or 3:2 pulldown like its more expensive cousins. I have a SharpVision LCD projector that has been begging for a 480i signal for 6 months now, so this was perfect. For the rest of you, it also outputs SVHS and regular composite. There's no RF jack so the cheapskates in the crowd should look elsewhere. I'm very happy with the video.

This player has no decoders in it, so Dolby Digital, DTS, and CD's are all sent digitally via the PCM out. This was another very attractive feature of the dvd player for me. I just bought a super-expensive receiver and I knew that I wanted that guy to do all the PCM decoding and D/A conversion for me instead of some other outboard processor. Although the sd-1200 has stereo out audio rca jacks, I have no idea what they sound like and I don't care. Again, this dvd player was a perfect fit for my home theater system. As far as I'm concerned, digital is digital and it does a fine job of spewing the audio bits into my receiver.

Naturally, the remote is pathetic, but I never planned to use it given my receiver's uber-remote. The buttons on the face preclude menu and setup access, but what do you want this is a $200 player. Not that you're missing anything, because once it's set up you probably aren't going to fool with the miniscule number of options available. I wouldn't worry about it (read: already cannibalized their remote's batteries).

Its worst attribute is the motor's volume during use. It emits a high whine that is not only audible, but annoying. It's comparable to the volume of a computer's fan, if it makes any difference. Something else that hasn't gotten old yet but probably will very soon-- every time you hit a button, the unit emits a beep. I don't care so much right now, but before long I'll probably dig out the manual to see if I can turn it off.

I would buy this again if I had a choice.

* I already have my DD, DTS, PCM decoders, so I didn't want one in my dvd player
* I wanted a 480i component signal
* cheap

I might not buy another player because AFAIK external scalers/doublers can't handle a progressive component signal, yet they perform line doubling and 3:2 pulldown almost as well as a progressive dvd player. Remains to be seen!
