Fails to recognize dolby digital about 20% of the time, and after six or seven months will not recognize DVDs even after repeated cleanings.

We have been very unhappy with both our Sony DVD playerS. From the moment of purchase they both failed to consistantly recognize dolby digital output and both of them quit reading DVD's at all after about six or seven months. Because we have always been loyal Sony customers, we gave them the benefit of the doubt about the first player, and bought the second one. At this point we just feel that Sony is marketing an inferior product. Even when in warranty, in order to get the DVD player fixed we would have had to pay for shipping and handling to and from the nearest Sony approved repair shop, which just happens to be OVER THREE HUNDRED MILES away.

Strength:

Great Value, Solid All-Around Player, Doesn't Lack Features

Weakness:

Sound is only accpetable.

I have to say that I believe we were on the early end of this unit's production and have not had ANY problems after years of hard use (I believe we rented about 120 DVDs last year and own a substantial library). I have used this unit outdoors in damp conditions for a nighttime "deck theater" and have not experienced the least bit of trouble (I am still puzzled by the other reviewers who all had problems). The value (overall features and quality per dollar) of this unit is tough to beat. For people just getting into DVD the unit packs all the pre-requisite onboard decoders for dolby digital, etc. Sound is just a little bit dull for me, and I've tried it through several receivers/amps, often with a dedicated CD player running through the same equipment (even my "watch me not care" friends noticed a difference).

Having said all that, I recently picked up the NAD T550 DVD player. It has few features relative to the Sony, but overall video and especially sound (even out of the box w/o burn in time) has been a welcome improvement. I still would say that this is all the DVD player that 95% of people ever need at a very reasonable cost.

Strength:

Great Picture Excellent Sound with DVDS - Excellent Sound with CDs

Weakness:

None So Far

I only paid $160.00 including tax because it was a shelf demo, no remote, no box. Luckly they had the operating manual. The Brand Master AV Consultant gave me a remote which I think was an upgraded one. Have not had any problems like so many of the others who purchased this item. Maybe because it was already broke in. Hopefully my luck will continue. Its a great starter DVD/CD Player for the price and it will give me experience for my next purchase even if it only last another year.

The picture is great, hooked up to Mitsubishi CS 40509 Tube TV; Yamaha RX-V800 Receiver; Klipsch KLF 20(s) Tower Speakers and KLF C7 Center. Great CD sound.

VERY disappointed. I had the unit for about one year. While we were watching a movie, it stalled once for about 10 seconds, started up and again stalled out and never restarted. I took it in for service and was told it would cost as much to fix it as just replace it. VERY unhappy. I felt Sony was a much more reliable brand than one years ocassional use.

Strength:

Doesn't flinch when I kick it.

Weakness:

Won't apologize for being a complete piece of crap.

I guess I'll consider myself lucky because mine took more than 18 months to die. But now, of the dozen some odd buttons on the front panel, only one still works: the power button, which switches the player from the state of being unable to do anything because of a lack of electricity to the state of being unable to do anything because it sucks big a$$. It may still be useful... FOR ME TO POOP ON.

Strength:

Worked goog at first

Weakness:

C13 errors, Freeze, No Disc error, just doesn't work, everything I now come to expect from a Sony product.

I have given up on Sony taking care of the C13 and No Disc errors. They have not responded to my attemps to contact then. I have reverted to spreading the good word about Sony to shoppers this Christmas season by visiting stores like Best Buy and Circuit City and informing potential customers of the problems with the sony brand name. I have printed many of the reviews here and have shown them to the potential customers, not one who has looked at these reviews walked away with a Sony DVD player. I have also give this web site address to the sales staff, some already had it, so they can advise people of the problems you can expect with the quality of a Sony product and Sony's lack of support after the sale. These units should be recalled.

Well I guess I'll see but for the money I couldn't pass this one up.I know that only the people with problems write in and say how unhappy they are but I'm sure the satified people aren't looking on the internet for a product review they are happy with.Hey for a hundred bucks and 1 year parts/90 days labor I think it's a great deal and the picture is great.Maybe in a while I'll think differently.
We'll see hope I got lucky and got a good one!

I have owned this DVD player now for about 6 months and have had no real problems. The picture looks great and the setup is fairly simple and clear. My only complaint is that at times the player can be heard spinning the DVD and there is no play back of recorded cd's. For the price though, this is an excellent player. Waiting to see if any problems occur once the warranty runs out as seems to be reported by some owners of this model.

After my player broke (before warranty expiration) Sony attempted to fix it three times. Once the final and unsuccessful repair was complete, the warranty had expired. Sony will not continue attemting to repair the problem without $180!!! Don't buy it. A ~$300 investment for 8 months of use it quite steep.

Strength:

Looks good.

Weakness:

It does not work.

The DVPS560 worked well for 13.5 months I was reasonably pleased with its overall performance, apart from the occassional picture break up. To my dismay the dreaded C13 error popped up, changed the disc, everything worked fine, put the dvd I was originally watching into the player...."NO DISC"...stupid me. I may have put the disc in upside down....NO the machine committed suicide and gave up the ghost. Sent an e-mail to Sony customer service via the web site. I actually received a prompt reply, stating that the best course of action was to telephone the 1-800 number. I have tried to contact them on numerous occassions without much success. No doubt there are lots of disgruntled Sony users' out there. The good guys at Best Buy will gladly fix the machine for $220 + Tax and a guarantee that it will fail again. I had the illusion that all my Sony products would last at least three years minimum (most have), so I did not need the extended warranty. If it failed then buy a new one. Now I have to search again for a new DVD player which meets my needs. Do I pick a machine that is at least one year old and read the reviews, good or bad. Or maybe a new all singing and dancing one and write another failed report in one years time. Sony needs to stand up to the plate and admit that this player is a stinker and do something about it.
