Freezes up

Thanks to the sonyhacker for the alignment advice.

Does the alignment procedure permanantely correct the problem, or does this become a monthly task?

I did it. It works. Just like what sony hacker said.

No special disc is needed. Just one Single layer and one Double layer DVDs

-Press CLEAR, TITLE and POWER to get to the diag mode.

Single Layer:

-Press #1 (DVD-SL) on the remote and insert a Single Layer DVD when the drawer opens.

-You will see some hex numbers jumping

-Press ENTER when a message displays "Enter to OK"

-Return to Drive Auto Adjustment menu

Double layer:
-Press #3 (DVD-DL) on the remote and insert a Dual Layer DVD when the drawer opens.

-You will see some hex numbers jumping

-Press ENTER when a message displays "Enter to OK"

-Unit will perform second layer test

-You will see some hex numbers jumping

-Press ENTER when a message displays "Enter to OK"

Power off to exit and then you can enjoy your DVDs again.

Forget about the $150 fee for fixing the units. The people at the Sony service center do the same thing to fix the problem......easy money for them.

Weakness:

doesn't work

I know this is a review board but please help...

How long does this alignment procedure take (I have watched alot of hex numbers on the screen)?

Do I need special alignment DVDs to perform (I was told these cost 1000 bucks)?

To those shopping for a DVD. I would pick a different brand. The Sony support I have gotten is nil. I have had this thing for 1 year 1 month and am SOL (the service rep said it was my option whether to repair or replace).

Strength:

Digital decoder, video tweaking capability

Weakness:

C13 error.

I have a similar C13 error as many here. Originally it didn't occur on disks that I purchased but happened on disks rented at Blockbuster. I must have returned 20 disks to Blockbuster thinking it was them. I mean I had a Sony so it couldn't be my player.

This weekend it started pausing on a purchased disk. It really seems to be related to the 2nd layer.

I am currently on hold with Sony to try and figure out what to do. They want 25 bucks for the service manual. From the posts here I guess it should have been included in the box!

Works well when it works. DTS sounds great!

Weakness:

Cannot play CD-R

Purchased on 8/5/00 for $289 ($307.76 with tax). I'm posting this review on 10/27/01. I hate to behave as Weird Al says in "It's all about the Pentiums" by "Posting 'ME TOO' like some brain dead AOLer" But there it is.

We watch movies no more often than once a week. In the last several weeks we would have problems viewing the extras or having the movie freeze with the "C:13:00" error. We hadto skip around the "bad" chapter.

Now it's dead. No matter what I put in, CD or DVD it would spin and make noise and then announce "no disk" on the front panel.

I have not contaced SONY yet, but I will. Is there some way we can band together? I will also try Circuit City for help.

I went to this web site when I bought this player and the reviews were good. Before this, I would have given it a good review. Good value (at the time) and a good overall rating.

Now, I think I'll look for another manufacturer.

Weakness:

Pretty noisy; you can hear the disc grinding during the movie,Loses the clear sound effect; cannot change certain audio and picture settings unless you stop the disc; and yes has systems of the "no disc" syndrome. Life of product is too short.

My Sony s560 dvd player has been on the blitz for the past month. Discs were skipping, the movie would pause then start from the beginning. The "no disc" message displays now, no code error though. It seems as if the disc just spins and spins and does not catch to see it actually has a disc to read.I purchased this about a year ago. I would have to look for the receipt to see if I am still under warranty. I am sure it is cutting it close though. I will be sending an email to Sony to direct them to this website and I hope all would do the same. Maybe this will give them a better awareness of the problem.

In the meantime, I will look into seeing if I am still under warranty and if not find other channels in correcting the problem. Good luck to everyone with the same problems and persevere.

Annoying C13 error. Won't recognize dvd's after 6-12 months of use.

I too had the same annoying problems with the S560D. I bought mine in March of 2001 and in December of 2001 it quit reading discs. Would come up with "No Disk" or C13 error. About 1 out of 10 tries a disc would play. And then it would skip and freeze horribly. I had given up all hope when I read SonyHacker's post below. I ran the laser adjustment just as he outlines and it worked like a charm. After finishing it I successfully played 7 dvd's in a row without problem. Anyone having this problem should give it a try. THANK YOU SONY HACKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
