Strength:

Worked great for 14 months.

Weakness:

C13 and No Disk after that

I was sure happy with this player for the first 14 months I had it. Tonight it's belly up and I see from this web site that I'm not the first to have this problem.

Shame on you, Sony. With this many problems on this unit, the warranty period should be extended. I would not recommend this unit (as of tonight) and will be buying a replacement from a different manufacturer.

Strength:

Worked well for about 6 months

Weakness:

It does not work anymore. The c:13 error started after some severe pixelation and skips. Just bought 4 BRAND NEW DISKS , and none of them work, so its not the disk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK Folks, I am taking up this cause, because I have the resources. I will take names and problems in my email to Sony directly and will begin a class action suit against them for faulty merchandise.
This player simpley has a design flaw that prevents it from working. Everyone on this site is having the same problem (C:13, pixelation, skips) at about the same time period 13 months or just over a year(when the warrenty ends). Obviously we all can't have dirty discs. I know my C:13 is not from the disks since I just bought 4 new ones and none of them play (I love movies).

So if I get enough email about this problem I will fight Sony for our money back or new replacement units.

Please email me at nohigher@yahoo.com.
Serious people only who are willing to do what needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Name, price paid, location, problem, contact....
I am not going to use you info, I am going to use it for leverage against SONY.
This is the last SONY product I buy, too bad for them, I am looking for a top of the line entertainment system.

PS I would have givin this product a zero rating but the site wont let me.

Strength:

Excellent in player letterboxing

Weakness:

none on my unit

I bought it new in December of '99 and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. I'm sorry that everyone got bad ones and it sure sounds like Sony's got some quality issues (the Sony DD receiver I bought at the same time broke last week! one week before the warranty ran out).
...
Maybe Sony should take mine back and see what they did right but let it be known that at least one of these has lasted 2 years without glitch.
BTW, the value at the time was great, now it is equaled by players half the price.

Strength:

Great Video and Audio when working.

Weakness:

Died after 7 mos of VERY infrequent use.

I owned this machine for about 7 mos before it bit the farm with a C13:0 error followed by the dreaded "No Disc" message. No extended warranty because I thought I was buying a quality Sony product. I see now that quality Sony anymore. At least as far as DVD players are concerned.

Built-in 5.1 decoder.

Weakness:

This damn c:13 error

This is actually the second unit. The first one would play a movie for awhile, then return to the main menu. I exchanged it, and the unit has worked fine, until the other night. Brand new copy of Aliens, would play to a point, then just freeze. And display the C:13:00 error. After ejecting and rebooting the machine a few times it finally continued with the movie, but would stop and stutter, often returning to chapter beginnings. I called Sony Canada. They told me they had no idea what I was talking about, but they would gladly look at it, and I would have to pay for any repairs of course. The warranty ran out 2 months ago!!!
Too bad, because I had really liked this DVD player.

Strength:

Worked fine for over a year

Weakness:

I started getting the c:13 error a brand new DVD!

Well, last night I decided to watch a DVD that I bought last week and got the C:13 error. I looked up the code in the manual and it says "Dirty Disc". I pulled out the disc and it is immaculate! No lint or air hairs. If I were to clean it with a cleaning cloth, it would only get dirtier. So I decided to put all my DVDs through the player to see which ones didn't work. I randomly grabbed another DVD and Wham!...another C:13. This doesn't look good so I randomly grab another DVD. The next 23 DVDs that I put throught the machine work fine. Interesting. Anyway, I bought the thing last June...actually my lovely wife gave it to me for Father's Day. Lucky me. It played fine until the warrantly ran out. My luck must have ran out too. So I decide to look around on the web for ideas on cleaning my player and ran straight into this review site. First hit. Looks like we are all in the same C13 boat. I think I will hop over to the Class Action Suit boat. Sounds like she is about to set sail.

Strength:

fooling poor consumers with the sony name.

Weakness:

it is a flawed pos. and sony knows it-AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

this is a follow up to my 8-14-01 review-after recieving my player from the repair shop-i plugged it in and put in a brand new disc-and guess what...NO DISC. it read much to my dissatisfaction no disc after getting it from a repair shop after a week! so it took it back. and three days later i plugged it back in and it worked. so i went to best buy and bought a new dvd player(pioneer has a good track record) and gave this away for free to a friend and told them to use is till it breaks and then throw it away and not dare spend any money on getting it fixed- I WARN ALL PEOPLE DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER-IT IS NOW OUTDATED SO IF YOU SEE THIS MODEL KNOW THAT THEY STOPPED MAKING IT AND IT'S OLD BACKSTOCK THEY ARE TRYING TO GET RID OF. stay away. we just want to watch movies and enjoy the great format of dvd's. so go and enjoy and make the right buying decision and don't make the same mistake all of us have purchasing this unit-never buy blindly always do research- this benefits you always in the long run and saves lots of headaches and tired head.

WONT PLAY ANY DVDS AFTER ABOUT A YEAR, C13 ERROR

MY 2ND SONY 560 JUST DIED LAST NIGHT AND I AM BUMMED. SAME C13 ERROR MESSAGE AS EVERYONE ELSE..THE DAMNED THING WAS A CONSUMER REPORTS BEST BUY ALONG WITH THE 360 PLAYER.I
BLAME CONSUMER REPORTS BUT SINCE IT DOESN'T USUALLY DIE FOR AT LEAST 3 OR 4 MONTHS, UP TO ABOUT 15 MONTHS FOR THE 2ND ONE, MAYBE I WILL CUT CONSUMER REPORTS SOME SLACK...
ANYWAY, IT WAS OCCASIONAL WON'T PLAY, THEN LAST NIGHT POPPED IN A NEW DVD. IT LOCKED UP, THEN I FOOLISHLY TRIED PLAYING IT A COUPLE TIMES MORE AND BINGO, WON'T PLAY ANY DVDS AGAIN.SONY SUCKS!! I HAVE HAD A RECEIVER AND CD PLAYER OF THEIRS DIE TOO.MY ONLY HOPE IS MAYBE SOME STORE IS STILL SELLING 560'S MODELS. DO THE OLD SWITCH AND RETURN TRICK AGAIN.MAKE SONY EAT IT.SOME PEOPLE ON DVD NEWS GROUPS SAID HOW THEY SOVED THEIR PROBLEM WITH THE AUTO ALIGN FUNCTION.
YOU PUSH A FEW KEYS WITH NO DVD IN, FORGET WHAT ONES TO GET
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC, THEN PUT IN A DVD AND RE-ALIGN IT.I TRIED THIS ON MY FIRST 560 AND IT DIDN'T WORK.DON'T REMEMBER HOW TO DO IT BUT DOUBT IT WOULD WORK ANYWAY..THE DRIVE OR SOMETHING SOUNDS HORRIBLE WHEN I PUT A DVD IN, I THINK ITS FRIED....SONY SUCKS

So far, so good. My dad got the newer Panasonic RV31, and I still prefer Sony's overlay (but too large) menu and remote control to Panasonic's graphic interface menu and remote control.

I haven't had any problems, but it's not been 1 year yet. Thankfully, I bought the 4-year extended warranty, so if I get the dreaded C:13 message, I'll be covered (but disappointed).

Everything I wrote about its performance in my earlier review is still the same. I have now purchased over 140 disks, mainly as used DVDs, and they all perform flawlessly, even some with scratches. (I did buy a DVD disc cleaner, though.) The only time I've rented a DVD has been my original rental of 2 copies of THE MATRIX so I could compare 3 DVD players with the same movie. I find used ones for $9 or $10 each, and that means if I watch them twice and resell them, it's still cheaper than a single rental at Blockbuster.

The rebate brought the price down to $250.

Another Update
It only took one week to get my unit back from the repair shop. I am told it was a Link IC. I presume that's short
for integrated circuit(lol). No charge to me. They bill Sony directly. Anyway, it works great.(At least for the moment). I just hope I don't run into that repeat 3-4 month repair cycle. Then I will be big time pissed off. Not to mention I've got things to do besides posting here.
The guy told me that heat(and this thing runs hot) should not have been a cause. There is a heat sink built in on
the botom of the unit and there are no vents necessary for dissapation.
For anyone interested, two numbers I have for the Sony Customer Service Information Center number are 1-800-282-2848 and 941-768-7600. I got satisfaction and maybe you will
too.
Until I see some long term positive results(no repairs)
I still have to moderate my ratings although when it works
the viewing experience with the Bose surround sound is awesome.
