**UPDATE**

Still absolutely no problems with any DVD's or any of the other problems listed on this site. I bought a Discwasher #1503, just in case, but I have not had to use it.

I still think this unit is a solid buy and will not disappoint anyone.

If you people (who wrote bad reviews) are all so peeved at how this player performs, then write the head of Sony Customer Service. A squeeky wheel gets the grease, and if Sony feels it is losing customers, they will compensate them. Believe me it does work!

I'm standing by my first ratings of 5 and 5.

I will keep you up to date otherwise.

Strength:

Features, clarity, use

Weakness:

Reliability

At first I was ecstatic with the quality of picture and sound only having a VCR prior to this unit. Then I had the skipping problem described in many of the reviews. We have played maybe 12 movies so far, we don't own and only rent once a week, and out of the twelve two have given us problems. We got through the movies but we had to restart two or three times. I haven't tried the discwasher method described by Ken Spero but I probably will.

I did find something wlse pretty interesting. I am in construction and enjoy music in my truck but everything in my truck gets pretty dusty from hauling etc. so I make copies of any music CDs I play in my truck so I don't ruin the original. Many people have mentioned the 560D won't play CDRs. I was befuddled because mine does play the CDRs I make, sort of. I recently made some and they wouldn't work in my 560D. I discovered that the ones that worked were on 'Prime Peripherals' media which is blue on back. The CDRs which did not work included two generic blue backed CDRs and Sanyo gold backed CDRs. I wonder if the media the DVDs are recorded on has anything to do with them not working. I hope both I and you all get it to work reliably. It is nice when it works.

Strength:

Sleek Looking, Good Quality Pic, Good Price

Weakness:

Drive is a bit loud.

I love this player. Its very sleek looking and well built. Have never had a problem with skipping and what not. The drive is a bit noisey but behind the glass in my cabinet I do not notice it. The picture and sound is great and would not trade this player for any other at this price.

Strength:

Great picture quality(when working)
Dolby Digital Decoder

Weakness:

No CD-R Support
After about 4 months, quits working
Center channel 5.1 output didn't work

When the player was working, it performed very well. However, after about 3 months, dvd's woudn't play without skipping all over the place.
Kept getting the error message that the dvd's were dirty. DVD's were fresh out of the package. Also, tried cleaning the lens with a dvd cleaning kit. Out of the box, the center channel 5.1 output didn't work. Pretty good warranty, and repair only took one week. Giving it two stars that it probably doesn't deserve. Stay away from this one!!!!!!!!

Strength:

I initially put a review on this on 12-27-00.
After using for eight months, I have got to say I am glad I bought this. It works flawless, wihtout an ounce of problems. I will continue to buy Sony

Weakness:

None that I see, except a lack of zoom, other then that, I guess I can live without it.

I highly recomend Sony for its Procision Drive. I played a scratched Disc which played like the scratches weren't even there. But in the portables, I hear Panasonic is the best over Sony and some of the other Brands, whether it is or not I don't know, but I am looking at a few mainly DVD-Audio. One of them is the Panasonic DVD-PA65 with no screen for the price of less then $300. dollars. Lowest internet price I have found is $253.

None, First DVD player. But I am looking at a portable DVD player, possibly Panasonic, since I here they are the best in the portables.

SONY NAME

Weakness:

It's a huge piece of dung.

SONY BLOWS.

This player, while heavy on features, is light on reliability and quality. Sony has always been known for their excellent video products...Trinitron, etc.

This player works well for about 8 months, then craps out. Frozen picture, pixellated picture...you name it, this player sh*ts it out the wrong end. If you're smart, you'll buy a comparable Panasonic or Toshiba.

Strength:

It's ability to be reliable

Weakness:

It's ability to pull the rug out from under you.

let me start by saying that this player was my best friend for about a year- and then a week ago- i saw the c13-no big deal- it's just a dirty disc. but wait so is this brand new one- and this one and this one- and then last saturday while watching one of my favorite(highly recommended)MALLRATS-it froze up for a minute- me with my mouth open. then nothing- it just said NO DISC-spelled like that-real pretentious like- not disk-but DISC. not only does my best friend go and quit working- but it stops working during a crucial screening in front of a chick-my wife- who i could never get to watch the movie before. i looked at the sony site and it is like finding a needle in a haystack- my reccommedation is to always by a warranty deal at all stores. even if it'll set you back fifty bucks- best buy has a four yeat deal. montgomery ward unfortunately went out of business- so i thought that i was screwed-thankfully i was a week away from sony's warranty and i'll get it back tommorrow. i bought a new dvd player player from sony- i trust them-somehow this one flew below radar. they're new precision drive 2 thingy is supposedly able to read the dirtiest of disks. and believe me i have tested this-just rent a dvd at blockbuster-what are people doing with these things? the new dvd player is passing with flying colors and it was at best buy-they're staying in business aren't they?

Quick Update
I spoke to someone at Sony in their customer service information center and told them about this site and all the people having problems with their 560's. The rep couldn't be nicer although unaware of the problems with
this unit. In order to make this C:13 problem known to Sony,
you have to let them know about it. I am told unless the
unit is brought in for repair to an authorized Sony repair shop, there is no record for them to check against. If enough repair problems are noted then they will research it.
Also, your unit has a one year warranty on parts AND labor. In fact, mine just expired (7/29) but because I'm within a thirty day period following the expiration date they will honor the warranty. I was told the repair service is the same whether you send it out to Sony or have the local authorized repair guy handle it.
**You need to send them a copy of the bill and the product number by fax to get authorization from them to your repair guy.
I can only say say that this is a step in the right direction. Whether the problem will reoccur is another issue.
Hopefully this won't take too long and I can post here with some positive results in a few weeks.
My previous post was written in obvious anger and I hope to be able to change my opinion when the problem is resolved.
I have to reenter a Value and an Overall rating below. I would like to hold off until the unit is fixed but until it is, I'm not raising my opinion.

Sleek Body Design (Does it matter????)

Weakness:

minus 100% reliability, skips CD's

Never new sites like audioreview, soundstage existed a year back. Originally from India (Sony is a high end there) hence thought since they have Trinitron so they must be good. Came here and heard of Integra etc.. too late. Bought it in July 2000, Froze up in Feb 2001, "No Disk Inserted" was under warranty got it fixed. My warranty expired July 31st, on August 10th while watching Chocolat - the last minutes C:13 error came and froze up : after that for any CD or DVD it says "No Disk Inserted". Called up the people who fixed it says since not under warranty they cannot fix it. I am stuck with a lemon here. Paid $290 in all. It's a shame. I have a sony vcr and it was a display model and i have watched movies on it for 12 hours continuos it did not create any problems and I own it for 1.5 yrs month now. Like Einstein I have come up with a theory - Friends bear with me now :) - here goes - since DVD is a relatively new technology - the reliability will be poor till the time we pass a certain threshold... My question is when do we pass that threshold. Now I am in the market for a new DVD player. My questions to you learned folks are :-

1. Should I buy a Samsung DVD which will cost me around 130 bucks incl S&H (If I assume that I would need to replace next year and I lose only $130). Or should I go with Integra DPC-5.1 for around $350 (Integra is the higher end of Onkyo)?

2. Should I buy a CD player and play all my CD's on it so as to offload the pressure from my DVD player? I found a great CD player [Technics PD9 at $85 - 5 disc cap., Optical out] on the net. Use CNET.com to find your low low prices...
So will buying a CD player help.

Folks I sincerely will be waiting for your replies. I am a very wounded man right now...

I have an Integra DTR-6.0 Recv, Polk Audio RM6600 5.1 speaker system, Transparent Cabling. I love this setup. Try the Integra series - you can find it at www.integrahometheater.com. I get my CD's from BMG Music service - The deals are way better than Columbia house. Sorry for putting in so many extras in the review - but i wanted to share my good experiences with you.

Have a good one...
