Strength:
Easy install, Good remote, Excellent picture and sound
Weakness:
On screen menuing could have been a little better. Manual could also use some improvement. This is an excellent DVD player. Its built solid and it plays great. The customization controls for the built in decoders are excellent and do a great job even for someone that doesn't have an A/V receiver. I use it in conjunction with my Sony STR-DE845 and it makes a great pair. It is interesting to note that the DTS decoder in the 560 is NOT the same as the one in 845, which suprised the daylights out of me. I wonder if anyone knows why they would not use a common decoder architecture amongst their products ? Similar Products Used: Toshiba 1600 |

nice picture, sound and setup

pause at least 3 or more when playing DVD DAM I'm just another unlucky one. I had this Sony DVD player for more then 5 months and now the problems start to showing up like the other. PAUSE in the middle of watching movies. I read about the other reviews that has the same problem and now is my turn. DAMM SONY GOES PICK ON SOME ONE ELES!!! Some time it'll pause and jump to a different chapter of the movies and then I have to go back and find out where it left off. First I thought my DVD was dirty and scratch. So I went out and got me a $35.00 DVD repair and cleaning kit and cleaned all my DVD movies the same problems still there pausing in the middle of watching the movies. So I end up pull out my old Toshiba DVD player and play the same DVD movies that pause all the time on the Sony DVD player, didn't have any problems what so ever. No wonder they all on sale from 299.00 to a 199.00 at Best Buy and Good Guys. Anyway to make a long story short SONY has to suck it up with a 1 star. Never again with a Sony DVD player in my life.... Strength:
works well when it works
Weakness:
Problems after 6 months of use I've read numerous reviews about how this unit develops problems after 6 months. It's true in my case (7 month owner) as well. After the unit has been running for 90 minutes, it now begins to skip and hang, sometimes taking me back to an entirely different part of the movie. It's extremely annoying and ruins the movie experience. I wonder what's going on with these units? |

Strength:
Features, Slimline design Plays Some CD-RW's
Weakness:
Plays very, very, very few CD-R as I understand Pretty Good Video, considering I'm an Audio Guy. I can't comment much on the Video quality since that is not my specialty area, but it looks pretty good throught the S-Video input to my older 27' Mitsubishi. Similar Products Used: None, my first. Looked closely at the Pioneer (for CD-R) and the Panasonic (Nice looking) |

Weakness:
Confusing Set-up, Remote needs work Simply the best unit for the money. If you are in the market for a dvd with a built-in dolby digital decoder, look no further. Believe me, I researched the better part of a year concerning this purchase and I am beyond happy with the unit's performance. Sure, set-up was confusing and required a call to Sony customer service, but the problem was solved in minutes. The major buttons on the remote should be larger, but I rarely touch the remote once a movie begins to play. You will not be disappointed with this player Similar Products Used: Sony DVP-S360 |

Strength:
does what it says; great 5:1 audio through Optical link to my Sony 915 home theatr surround system
Weakness:
does not have a screen fill for square TV's (mine is a 35" MItsubishi; even Pan/Scan only fills 75% with boxed output; needs a zoom feature like Toshiba, Panasonic 95% of DVD's rented and purchased can't fill sq. TV's sending my Sony back, because if I can't get beeter than VHS including full screen then DVD is not worth the difference for audio alone. Make sure you research this before spending your money. I'm going to purchase the new two-week old Toshiba 1700 model. I will give up an Oprtical Digital I/O to a Coaxial Electroinc Digital, but they say it will give me same audio results. Stay tuned for Toshiba 1700 single player DVD review to come. Also, How does Best Buy (a national AV store) fill all their TV products they display from a single DVD source without "boxed" look on the sq products. They have produced software to have it taken care of behind the scenes!! |

see below bruce, come on!! not trying to bag you but letterboxed movies are what it's all about. most movies are formatted in the widescreen 1.66:1 / 1.78:1 / 1.85:1 / 220:1 / 225:1 or 235:1 aspect ratios. this was to accomodate the "new" 70mm AND 35MM "panoramic" film extravaganzas of the 50's and 60's. 1.33:1 or pan and scan/square formats are the older movie and tv modes. some dvd disks have dual aspect ratios on the disks, but widescreen, as i said before, is the format of choice for pretty much most of us. NOW, i'm not a big fan of best buy, but they are'nt pulling the wool over anyones eyes. they just have a feed from a best buy promotion dvd formatted in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio ( or square, well really not square. 3 inches high for every four inches left to right) playing on all of their screens that are hooked up to the video feed of the dvd player.
