Strength:

Good sound and picture. Versatile remote.

Weakness:

C:13 No Disc problem

I had a lot of problems with this unit skipping and not playing DVD's properly. It died and gave the dreaded "No Disc" readout. I checked my receipt and found it was one year + one day. I was furious and tried to get Circuit City to honor the warranty. They said they couldn't and suggested I call Sony. I called Sony and was given a 30 day extension to the one year warranty. With the extension I got the unit repaired for free from Circuit City. The repair tag said: SONA-6062-397-A LASER PU. That was about 2 months ago. Since that time the unit has played flawlessly. It really does have good picture and sound when it is working properly. Sony should fess up and admit they have a problem with the laser pickup on this unit.

Weakness:

Seems like it has some inherent design flaw that Sony refuses to acknowledge.

After 11 months, started skipping and getting the C13 error. After 13 months, total failure now, getting No Disc errors. I called Sony Service, they'll only extend original warranty 30 days.

Strength:

It's SONY! Excellent picture and sound, remote, outputs, price, features and built-in DD decoder

The Sony DVP-S560D looks much like the Sony S360, but in addition to its features it has a built-in Dolby Digital Decoder, microphone jack with a volume control and center channel equalizer/dialogue enhancer. As its lesser sibling (S360), Sony S560D has an impressive array of inputs: 2 S-Video outputs, 2 composite video and 2 analog audio outs, component video out, digital coaxial and optical outs(Dolby Digital and DTS compatible). S560D adds a front headphone jack with a volume control and a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel analog output. The S560D player plays DVD-Video, CD-Audio and Video CD, has the Center Channel Equalizer that allows you to boost the center channel sound level to be able to hear the dialogues better, supports DVD-Text and CD-Text. Frame-by-frame, SmoothScan and SmoothSlow (three speeds for high-speed and two speeds for low-speed search in both directions) allow you to study your favorite movie fragments, S560D also has a bit-rate indicator.
The front panel has a jog/shuttle control. The S560D is very slim and lightweight (just 6 lbs. 3 oz - 2.8 kg) – it weights the same as S360. Both the player and the remote look very nice. The remote control allows you to control different brands of TVs and receivers.
You can control menus from the front panel, so there is no need to use your remote every time you have to do something. Small annoyance – the remote has a “Power” utton that is located in the upper right corner, whereas majority of manufacturers place it on the left side (and make it red, not green as in this case). In addition, the remote could have backlit buttons. Other features of the S560D include a repeat mode (disc, A-B), shuffle (random play) and you can also program the order in which the tracks will be played (even for DVDs). A standard for modern DVD players “resume” function is also present along with advanced parental control (can be set individually for 50 discs!), Digital Cinema Sound modes, Virtual Enhanced Surround Sound(simulates surround sound using just 2 speakers). Geez, I could go on. It is an awesome player. Click Here to

No Strengths. Piece of crap

Weakness:

Everything.

I bought this DVD player only a month back as my Christmas gift to my wife. This DVD is a piece of crap. I have just seen two movies on this and it broke down on me two days back. The DVD says "NO DISK" even when I did everything possible to make the DVD come to life. I thought it could be some dust or moisture problem and actally went out and bouth a new movie to watch and it still would not work. I returned the unit to the place where I bought this crap from and will not ever buy a sony DVD again.

AC-3 DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER,3-D VIRTUAL SOUNDS FROM ONLY 2 SPEAKERS,SMOOTH SCAN,COMPOSITE VIDEO (RED,GREEN,BLUE).

Weakness:

NO ZOOM,A LITTLE NOISY,(LIKE ALMOST ALL OF THEM)

I THINK ITS OF VERY GOOD QUALITY,HAS NUMEROUS FEATURES,SMOOTH SCAN,D.D.DECODER,OPT.INPUT,3-D SOUND,WHAT REALLY SOLD ME ON IT IS HOW SLEEK AND THIN IT WAS,I AM SURPRISED THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ZOOM FEATURE WHEN MY $189.00 ZENITH DOES.SOMETIMES ITS A LITTLE NOISY DURRING QUIET SEENS,BUT THIS IS MY #4 FOR ME BELIEVE ME THERE ALL A LITTLE LOUD.OVER ALL I THINK IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN AROUND ITS BEST TO KEEP IT OUT OF REACH,THERE NOT THAT REPUTABLE FOR BEING TOUGH YET.ONLY PROBLEM IVE REALLY ENCOUNTERD IS WE WENT TO WATCH A MOVIE ONE TIME AND 613 KEPT DISPLAYING, ENDED UP BEING JUST A DIRTY DISK TRAY.AS MUCH AS I LIKE SONY PRODUCTS I WOULD RECOMEND BUYING A TOSHIBA.THEY SEEM TO BE AHEAD OF THE GAME.

Strength:

Great video quality, nice menu, Optical outputs along with coaxial, and separate outputs (flexibility in connecting to home theaters). Speaker adjustments. Even if you lose the remote, you can still navigate the menu and dvd. Component video output

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R's (Thats my biggest complaint right there), a little loud too, make sure you close your a/v cabinet door

I bought this DVD player impressed by its array of options. I spent forever dialing it in to my surround system, and I enjoy all the control this player gives you. I also only need 1 remote to control this player and my tv, since both are made by sony :). I haven't had any problems with this dvd player. I think this gives a lot of bang for its dollar, so if you are consciencious on how much you're spending for a dvd player, I think this one gives you a lot for its price. I say its well built, the tray is sturdy by my standards, its about as sturdy as you would get from a computer's cd drive. I also like how small this thing is (I kinda laughed when I took it out of the box cuz of its incredibly small size).
I even compared this to my Kenwood CD changer vs. this DVD player to see which one sounded better. Well, this player did, but the cd changer still played cd-r's
Its a good dvd player

Strength:

Quiet, plays CD/RWs, Customizable, great Picture

Weakness:

Will not play CD/Rs

I love this little DVD Box. I really do not understand what everyone is talking about when they say it is noisy. I sit 8 feet from mine and I do not hear it at all. Maybe yall need to turn down your hearing aids.

I have a STR-V444ES, the S560D, Speakers Polk Audio 2 RT-2000i for front, the CS350 for mid range and 2 RT1000 for rears. This system rocks.

I connected the Optical Audio from the DVD to the receiver and a Video Cable From Radio Trash for the video feed to the receiver. 70 Ohm Video cables work as well as Monster cable and are 10% of the cost. Got this information from another Audiophile K.A. Max Paine. ( Yeah I know, but I don't have S-Video on my TV yet, and Since S-Video and RCA video are on separtate buses - I could not use the S-Video )

TV Purchase is next!!!!!
Any suggestions out there - HDTV, WideScreen or Projection

I have heard the HDTV is not going to be broadcast until 2004 and the black lines on the side will damage a widescreen TV, and HDTV is quite expensive right now. So I think I am going with a regular projection.

Strength:

Easy install, Good remote, Excellent picture and sound

Weakness:

On screen menuing could have been a little better. Manual could also use some improvement.

This is an excellent DVD player. Its built solid and it plays great. The customization controls for the built in decoders are excellent and do a great job even for someone that doesn't have an A/V receiver. I use it in conjunction with my Sony STR-DE845 and it makes a great pair. It is interesting to note that the DTS decoder in the 560 is NOT the same as the one in 845, which suprised the daylights out of me. I wonder if anyone knows why they would not use a common decoder architecture amongst their products ?

I recomend this player to anyone. The few complaints that I read in here contain subjective comments. The few technical problems that I read appear to be typical "infant mortalities", that happens with any product, esspecially with a popular one like this one.

Costco now carries the unit for $269 if anyone wants a good deal. I like buying from a store because if you do fall victim of an "oops !" you can swap units within hours not days (as with mail order).
