Strength:

Slimline, good picture quality and lots of features.

Weakness:

Poor reliability

I was very happy with this unit when I first go it. After a while, After about a month, it would only play one movie in one session. If we tried to play a second movie, it would get approximately halfway though and then skip to another part of the movie, usually, the beginning. This thing in my opinion sucks. If you buy one and don't have any of these reliability problems that everybody seems to have, you will be pleased with your purchase, but I would put it though its paces to make sure if it will die, it does so before my 30 day return period ends(assuming you get this "luxury"). Fill out your warranty card and send it in. This unit is not reliable.

Strength:

Good Sound, Dolby Decoder built in

Weakness:

None that I have found yet

I bought this player about 5 months ago, and I am very happy with it. The receiver I have doesn't have a decoder in it, but it does have the ability to drive 5.1 sound properly, so this one was a good choice. I have seen some comments about reliability here, but so far I have had no problems!

All I can say is that this player ROCKS! I ahve never used such a reliable, solid, cool looking player before...and probably won't have to.

Great sound, video and choices for options and upgrades than any on the market.

You can't lose with this player...run to your local store now!

Weakness:

None...so far

An excellent machine overall. I have had no problems with it what so ever. I have watched 50+ dvd's and nothing has gone wrong. I'm beginning to wonder if these other reviews are in the right place?

Weed through these reviews very carefully, because many of the "so called" problems are minor in nature, if they are problems at all!

I would not hesitate to purchase another Sony DVD player.

Strength:

Small Size, Sony Brand Name, Lots of Outputs

Weakness:

Heat Buildup, Build Quality, Performance

DON'T BUY UNTIL YOU READ THE REVIEWS ON THIS SITE!!!

At first, I was very happy with the palyer. It did all that it was supposed to do, and it seemed to perform well. After approximately 6 months, the player began to skip. Then it started to freeze. Now, it gives the C13 (dirty disc) error on brand new discs, and finally, will not even recognize when discs are put in. I've played about 50 movies in this thing since it was new last fall. Maybe a couple per weekend on average.

I've never owned another DVD player, but I've owned lots of other electronic devices. A six (6) month life span is just not acceptable. Burger King wristwatches last longer. I can't honestly recommend it to anyone, unless they need a DVD player to throw out their window. I am taking it to a Sony Service Center. I'll repost the results.

Weakness:

reliability

Well, I bought this unit having used some of the Sony higher end stuff, thinking it might be the same. The first 5 months was a beautiful relationship, sounded good, wouldn't play video cd, even though it's supposed to, so anyway, I started getting weird audio fragments every once in a while, then, the dreaded, "lets wait till the best part at the end, then change to a different chapter!" Then the all forboding, microsoft exceptional error type condition "error 13" on ALL discs, wouldn't play a damn thing, not even a cd!!! So I brought it back to CC, complained enough about it, and they were nice enough to give me an instore credit to get something else. So I looked. I ended up with an AIWA XD-DV370 (see the reviews)
This unit reads MP3's. and EVERYTHING you throw into it. It has a better picture and sound then the sony does, and so far has been an absolute trooper, I can play 3 movies in one night with it, where as the sony would quit through the second movie. I even had enough cash left over to but 5 DVD's!!!! I recieved a call from a friend of mine last week that bought the same sony unit I did, when I bought mine. HIS JUST DIED AS WELL!!!! So judging by some of the other posts here, sony has a problem!! Anyway, the AIWA, (yeah I know, Aiwa is lowend) but the XD-DV370 is a GREAT unit!!! I would recomend that, and it's much cheaper as well if you surf the net some.....

Strength:

I love the ease of use and installation. Everything is fairly easy to understand and use.

Weakness:

Reliability. I have had the same problem twice and Sony can't seem to get it fixed.

The player is fantastic...when it works. I am having similar problems as others with the player not recognizing the CD/DVD. The error shows up as No Disc. I have had the player for approximately 6 months, including 5 weeks of being with Sony being allegedly fixed once before. I finally got it back from them on Friday and it went down 20 minutes later. Now, FedEx is coming back to pick it up... again. Hopefully this time, Sony will get it right and fix the problem so I can finally get back to watching movies. In the mean time, I'm disappointed with Sony's performance.

Weakness:

Peace of junk

I bought it about 5 months ago. The authorized repair shop had it longer for repairs than I had chance to enjoy it. Yesterday it broke for the fifth time. I am a very patient guy but SONY has done it. DO NOT BUY THEIR JUNK!!!
