Strength:

Size, Optical output, Ease of operation and hook up.

Weakness:

Pause during layer change, slight disc spin noise

When we firt bought our new entertainment center, I was a bit of a rookie. I bought the older DVP530, and realised there were no 5.1 outputs. So I returned it and got the newer 560. Now I use the optical output anyway, but managed to avoid the lip sync problems with the newer model. This is my first DVD player, however I started out with semi-high standards. I run it through my Sony STR-DE935 reciever with the S-video and optical cabel connections in to my Sony 32" tv. Personnaly to me,the surround sound is incredible from DVD. The picture quality is extreamly good(could be excelent if my tv had component video). Very easy to operate and control from the remote. It does have a tendency to pause during layer changes, & I only really notice the disc spin noise when it starts. No other complaints so far.

Strength:

DD Decoder, small size, cool looking, great picture and sound.

Weakness:

Great entry level system. Picture quality is great, as is the sound. Recommended. It's not noisy like other people have said, but I do have it in a cabinet with a glass door.

Strength:

Not sure yet

Weakness:

poor composite output

Well, the thing that really disapointed me about this player
is the composite video output which is all I've tried so far.

This is my 2nd DVD player, a couple weeks ago, I bought the AIWA. I'd seen a review in Sound&Visios; they said it was
slow but had good picture quality. Well, it had good picture quality, was slow, but must have had really bad firmware, because it would skip, reliably, in the same places, skipping several minutes in places, on the Abyss.

So finally I did some reseach (at this site) and decided to
get the 530 or the newer 560, even though the latter had no
reviews yet.

OK, this is a DVD player, the video should be awesome, but
I could immediately tell the picture quality of the Abyss
was inferior to that I seen from the Aiwa. The main
problem is that the top black line caused by the wide screen
format on my conventional TV is spread out over several
scan lines. NO, my wife didn't notice, and many people
wouldn't maybe, but it bugs the heck out of me.

I first thought, well, maybe the signal is too hot for my older Mitsubishi TV, which BTW is still sharper than many new sets, including the flat screen Sony's. It makes sense
that some DVD will match up better with some sets.

But I also just bought a brand new Sony VCR a couple weeks
ago, and its picture quality is better in some (especially
the one mentioned above) respects than the 560!

Maybe the conponent video would be better, and maybe I just
got a lemon, but if you assume as I did that because it is
a DVD player and the picture is going to be good, then you
might be disapointed. From the Aiwa, I know the picture
can be very good. But this Sony may not be what you are
looking for if you want a good picture. I also get the
impression that the processing they are doing may or may
not be desirable. When I first saw the Abyss, and compared
it to Walking with Dinosaurs, (on the Aiwa)and I saw what I
expected to see. The Abyss, which has to be from older
35mm or 70mm masters, looked like an analog source.
Walking with Dinosaurs was a lot more pristene and 'digital'
looking. On the 560, the Abyss looks like it's been
processed some how. The dynamic range (contrast) seems
to have been expanded too far. It looks a little fake.
For me, source quality is good enough. Don't screw with
it, it ain't going to be perfect!

And yes, I have a Sony DTV system. It's picture, like the
new VCR, is better than the 560.

If I find out more, I'll get back. Hopefully I just got
a lemon.

Try it out with your set before you make up your mind.
And hey Sony, if Aiwa can do zoom for the same price roughly, you can too!

Strength:

Great picture, Has 24/96 digital output, small size and enough features to do everything

Weakness:

none so far except I do agree about the disc noise

This is my first dvd and i'm running it through the Denon AVR-3300 to my sony 35". The sound and picture quality and great. You must watch DTS movies to get the real sound experience. I have run about 15 dvd's and have had no problems at all. The remote is typical sony, does a very good job. I looked a lot of players including multi-disc (I couldn't see the need if you have a good cd player already) and you got to watch the size of the units ( most are to deep for a lot of audio cabinets). If your looking for a new DVD player under 300 take a really close look at this one.

Excellent picture quality, nice features, nice price

Weakness:

Disc spinning noise, some menus can't be accessed while disc is playing

This is the first dvd player I've owned but from what I seen in the Sony, it doesn't disappoint. I purchased it at the same time as my Sony 27" Wega and was amazed at the results. The picture is clean and accurate, but you can see some artifacts/pixel noise (probably from the dvd compression rather than the Sony's fault) in some scenes of some movies. Movies such as Titanic look excellent and clear, The Matrix looked slightly green (as the film makers intented?), other movies depend mostly on the amount of dvd compression and the transfer at the studio.

My only 2 complaints:
1. The spinning disc noise will drive you nuts unless you place it in a cabinet with a glass door.
2. To access some of the menus (such as "setup"), you must first stop the player. A bit of a pain, but I'll still keep it.

Does anyone know whether the "lipsync" problem was fixed in this model? Can I check a serial number or something? I haven't had the problem yet but don't want it either.

Strength:

The weakness of being completely unable to fulfill its purpose obliterates any strengths this machine may once have possessed.

Weakness:

C:13:00 error appears everytime I foolishly attempt to watch a movie. Unable to play DVDs in their entirety after six months of minimal use - skips or gets stuck; I have better luck with CDs but do experience skipping from time to time. The player seems to run very hot, which I thought might be causing the problem, but even after letting the machine cool down C:13:00!!

This product is worthless. I got it as a reward from a credit card program, which makes me suspicious as to just how Sony settled on this model to offer up as a freebee.

Turns out that a co-worker of mine has the same player AND the same troubles; he pointed me here. From what I have read, repair is a waste of time. Now I am out the card mileage, and my only recourse seems to be requesting a replacement player - same model. No thanks! I wouldn't go through the frustration of trying to piece together movie plots, while skipping chapters and attempting to work my way back to just the spot before the stupid thing gets stuck.

Normally I look to Sony as a provider of quality electronics; without a doubt this experience has changed my view. How this product passed any kind of inspection/testing process and made it onto the market is beyond me. Save yourself some time, money and aggravation and avoid this model or Sony altogether.

Weakness:

It's a SONY

This player worked well for about 14 months, then dies. It all started with a frozen pixellated picture later on wouldn't play audio cd's. Now it won't play anything.
After talking to sony's (lack of) customer service, I will never buy another sony product of any kind.

Remote Control

This DVD Player is awesome for the price. Picked it up at Good Guys for $269. I also have a Sony DVP - S550D that I bought 3 months ago that I love. I needed a 2nd deck for the family room 35 inch Mitsubishi.

The picture quality is superb for this price range - can't be beat. The video EQ on this deck allows 5 addition preset color enhancement settings. This is plenty for you to play with. I also like the ability to enhance the center channel output so that you can hear the dialog much better on movies. The sound is great - I watched the Eagles DVD " Hell Freezes Over" and it sounded awesome on my Carver 2000 Receiver with Klipsch 5.5 speakers. It rocks!!

The only thing that is a nuisance is the remote - they skimped here. They didn't provide a channel up and down button for the TV function on the remote. I called Sony and customer service couldn't believe it also. Bad design - if you want to tune to another channel - you have to use the keypad nad key it in - this is a pain. Well I guess I will be using two remotes when I need to switch back to my TV. Also the deck front panel control has only a chapter forward and reverse search and you can't control the FF, REV, OR Slow functions on the front of the deck - you have to use the remote. The 550 remote is much better even though its big but that doesn't bother me to have a hunker remote. The front panel allows you to search better also.

It still a very good deck though and gets Wes's High 5 rating!!!!

I got my first C:0013 & No Disc errors tonight (received a an X-mas present 2000)and since I couldn't find my manual I figured I would search the web to see what the error meant. My first hit was for the Sony DVP-S570D model. It seems as though that model is a peice of crap too. Not sure what I am going to do just yet, but you can guarantee I'll be making some phone calls. If there is a class action lawsuit, I'm in.
