Strength:

I liked it until it started freezing at the end of DVDs

Weakness:

At the end of some movies it freezes up and refuses to finish the disk.

At the end of some movies, it freezes. Cleaning the disk doesn't help. This happens with new disks and old. Count me in on the class action suit. hamelrick@hotmail.com. Let me know if I can help. If anyone has made progress with Sony on this issue please let me know. Thanks.

5.1 Channel Output, Video Equalizer, Digital Video Enhancer

Weakness:

N/A

Santa forgot my DVD player this year, so i had to purchase this one for myself. I have an older pro logic reciever from Kenwood, but it was 'Digital Ready' meaning it had the 6 channel input connections. That was the only reason I bought this model becuase it had the 5.1 channel output. Everything else at Best Buy only had the optical out, or single coaxial out. After a little finageling with about 12 new wires running this way and that behind my tv I was off to the movie theatre in my own home.

I watched Gladiator, Matrix (both great on DVD) and Goodfellas (not really special on DVD) and I must say that my system was being pushed on all 6 channels. I run a full Kenwood system with a large center, large L/R, small rears, and a 10" JBL subwoofer. I felt like i was right out the movies without the annoying person talking on their cell phone behind you.

The video equalizer and enhancers were truly great improvements upon the quality of the picture. make sure you take the time to read the manual and change the settings to Cinema, etc. It is worth the extra 20 mins of reading and setup time.

also, I did not notice any skipping on Gladiator nor was there any noise from the DVD unit itself. possibly a product defect on older builds.

this is a MUST buy for people with older 'digital ready' recievers. you will save yourself a bundle from purchasing a Digital Reciever or a Digital Decoder, and you can throw away that out-dated VCR.

Strength:

Superb image quality and sound

Weakness:

Had to be sent to Sony for repair/upgrade

The image quality is stunning on a Wega XBR playing anamorphic mode. The unit perfomed flawlessly until 007 went in.

I bought a James Bond collection set recently, when I inserted any disc from the collection the unit shut itself off. I even had problem to get the disc out.

All the disc from this set are on gold covered DVD and I think this problem is related to the CD-R,CD-RW (gold, silver medium)discussion going on. The repair was done under waranty and the slip indicated some IC replacement. The clerk at the repair shop admited having other 560D in for the same problem.

My conclusion is that this model initialy wasn't hable to read any DVD or CD with gold medium and Sony made an upgrade to this unit so it is now able to read gold disc. If you have a new model then the upgrade is probably already in, but if you got an older model check it out before the waranty expire.

Strength:

Great picture quality.

Weakness:

Can be noisy.

I won this product through the Coca-Cola "pop the top and win" game. I would not even thought of purchasing this DVD player on my own, especially since I already own one. The picture quality is great, however the setup can be a little tedious. The number out outputs really helped as well. Overall a great product.

A real pain for various setups

Just purchased this unit and have found it to be excellent for the money, and the variable video enhancement options are a real plus.Like the surround modes.Yes,it's a little noisey spinning but not that bad.Found the picture quality to be fantastic, and the only other one to buy maybe would be a Pioneer Elite DV-37 for alot more money.Buy one and be happy.Mine hooked up with Magnan IIIi interconnect is AMAZING sound.

Will not play CD-Rs

If you want to play CD-Rs don't buy this machine. Sony says the only DVD player that will play CD-Rs is the $1000 model 7700

Strength:

Great picture and no lip sync problems

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R discs.

I absolutely love this DVD player. My only problem is that it doesn't play CD-R discs very well. (It constantly skips) I was wondering if anybody else has this same problem? Maybe a different brand of disc might remedy this problem... Otherwise, this is probably one of the best DVD players under $300.00.

Size, Audio/Video Performance

Weakness:

Noisy drive, No zoom, Layer changes

I purchased this player online through moreaudiovideo.com for $269. I originally selected the DVP-S530, but it was replaced by this model. The unit is unbelievably slim in design, and it is very nice looking. Hook up was very simple, I did not use the decoder in the player so a two wire hookup is all that was needed. The s-video is awesome, I could not be more pleased with the performance. Audio is also top notch, I used the digital coax out to my receiver so it can do all of the digital processing. As far as the drive noise goes, it is there, but mainly at startup, and I have never heard it over the soundtrack during playback, even at very low volume. So really it is not a problem, but I would have gladly paid another $30 or $40 to have is be absolutely silent (which it should be, even if it was a half inch or so taller. Not having a zoom feature can be anoying if you want to fill the entire screen for anamorphic DVD's. You have to stop playback to make any changes to the setup, which I think should be able to be done during playback. It does take a milisecond to switch layers, but it is barley noticable on some DVD's. Overall I have been pleased, especially for the price. It has all of the hookups for future upgrades, and that is nice in this day and age of disposable hardware. Since is has no zoom feature I will give it 4 stars for an overall rating, but for value, I will give it 5 stars.

Strength:

Good picture, size

Weakness:

Not able to override to full screen picture

I really like this unit. I felt the video quality was very good. Yes, there will be a difference depending on the age of the film master they made the DVD from.

The disc spinning noise has been an issue for quite a few reviewers but although I too can hear the motor spin the disc up, it is only at the beginning BEFORE the movie starts where I hear it. That doesn't bother me in the least.
Yeah, I wish it switched layers faster but for the price it is great. I use S-video into my television and the picture quality is very nice, by the way.

Someone else mentioned in a review that getting a movie to go full screen was not possible. So far I have met with the same situation, although the manual specifically states that depending on the disc the picture may override the "4:3 Pan Scan" setting and keep it in letterbox mode. I imagine this will be mostly encountered with movies and that video programs on disc will give you more of a choice.

The price is excellent! We bought the unit at a store where already had bought something else on sale and we got $100 bucks back on that too. So we paid even less than the $290 most people are finding for - we paid $200 bucks.

The remote was standard Sony fair. Laid out logically it does the job. It has some bottons to specifically access some of the menu functions directly instead of having to wade through some menus.

Although I consider myself an audiophile (video too)this is a great unit. It gives the higher priced models a bit of a run for the money.

Great player. I'd recommend it to others.

J.K.
